I dig Jazz and blues, and honestly, while I do enjoy this album and still give it a spin now and again, it is sloppy. From what I've read about its recording it was done in only a couple of takes and with random studio musicians. Van Morrison's vocal delivery are the only real saving grace, the overall instrumentation and production are not great. I recall one specific passage where the top of the mix is a fucking auto-harp playing quarter notes, it sounds like the musician is trying to figure out what the fuck is going on and that is pretty much a theme for the whole record, the musicians sound like they needed more time to flesh out their parts.

For releases I've really been looking forward to I try to make sure that my first listen through is had just sitting somewhere I think is fitting for the music. Whenever I'm studying records to learn things from their drummers I do something similar, I just sit behind my kit and focus on listening to the music and how they're playing it.
