The problem is that U2 was the "consensus band" of Generation X. They were the band everybody agreed was pretty good. Millennial backlash is a response to the hugely commercial status of the band and Seinfeld-is-not-funny syndrome.
If it makes you feel any better, the same thing will happen to /mu/'s "consensus" band, Radiohead, in the coming years.
Joshua tree should be 10

Hello /mu/, quick question:
Is "Musical" a genre of music?
And if so, is every song in a musical part of that genre?
If not, could you make examples of what genres in musicals such as Fiddler, Poto and Les Mis are?
Thanks!
bumb
I consider it a soundtrack. Musical is a genre of film or play.
"Showtunes" is the term used for songs from traditional musicals, and broadly describes a genre. Closely related to traditional pop and tin pan alley, not to mention jazz (many standards are showtunes).
But the "genre" is also heavily derivative on existing styles, so there's not always a precise distinction between a showtune and its influences, in terms of genres.
