I hate to bring out the age-old and very deservedly hated saying, but just watch the show. Start on season 1 episode 1 just like most of us did. Who knows, maybe you'll find something you really enjoy.

To put it in perspective, when the pony shit started happening back in 2010, I really fucking hated all the threads that were being made and grew to be a bit of a hater. Then my friend convinced me to give it a shot.

Are there any parts of the show where the characters get trapped and have to struggle to get out? Or maybe they get captured against their will?

This is part of of why I dislike the later seasons. They really forced in a shit load of musical numbers after all the songs in season 1 and 2 were such a huge hit. I mean, yeah, the show had always had songs, but I feel there was more quantity and less quality. Season 1 and 2 have some of the most memorable songs in the entire series.

Personally I got caught in it because it felt great to battle the feelings of shame that comes with watching a little girls show, while at the same time feeling justified in the fact that it wasn't just a little girls show. These days it's nothing out of the ordinary anymore and I rarely feel any shame over it, so it's not appealing in that way anymore.
