Think it's because it gave the truest glimpse of what Faust wanted the show to be like. To me it's the season that's most like a children's show (common childhood friendship problems, Pinkie constantly singing little ditties, characters stating the moral at the end, usually to a mother figure). It's whimsical, simpler, and more laid-back compared to later seasons.
Season 2 was sort of like Season 1, at least until about A Friend in Deed. Then the tone started to shift and underwent a self-aware warp with Too Many Pinkie Pies.

It feels like all OCs that aren't just jokes/player characters made for Quest threads are hated by y'all. And the conversation always goes like this.

You don't really get the concept of new characters, do you? New characters aren't interesting because "Oh look, it's a new character, look at how interesting and new she is!". (cough cough glimmer) They're interesting because they change the tone of the show, even if only a little, just by existing. They allow for new plotlines and new stories and new adventures. Applejack and Pinkie Pie might not go on a quest to Griffonstone to get some rare legendary cooking spices, only to find 'The Mountain Of Doom' is actually some tiny store, but when paired up with Toasty Buns the crazy-determined Unicorn chef-with-a-pet-rabbit OC, they will. Twilight on her own might not try out Magical MMA, but with the mid-carder Star Storm encouraging her and opening doors for her, she can.

Because the board isn't a hivemind, and when you pretend that is a hivemind to try and understand it, you understandably become confused. Yes, some people don't like OC's that are alicorns. Some do. That's why we have Erroria threads. Some people like OC's that are grimdark, some people don't. That's why we have FoE threads. Some people like OC's that are mary sues, and that's why we have Glimmer threads. Some people hate OC's in general, and they can't be helped and I assume they go into threads about canon ponies.
And yes, there are OC's that the board does hate as a whole, but that doesn't mean we hate original characters as a whole. It means we hate that particular character.
But throwing a blanket over the term 'original character' and claiming that the board as a whole hates every single one is ridiculous and baseless. It's like going onto /co/ and asking 'why does everyone here hate Batman?'
