I honestly hope they don't, or if they do it's just a one off thing. I legitimatley prefer 2d animation over 3d and I'm deeply saddened that a lot of different studios have abandoned 2d.
3d animation can be nice and all, but I find it generally lacks the soul and the character that a well stylized 2d animation can bring to the table. It doesn't help that a lot of 3d animation ends up being just turbo-moe-blobs...

Its implied in the journal of the two sisters that celestia and luna were born alicorns, and were raised by other alicorns, like flurry heart was.
they probably immigrated to equestria and that's why equestria hasn't Seen an alicorn birth yet.
One would expect that ascension into an alicorn could only be done with the tree of harmony, but cadence apparently ascended just by hugging someone really, REALLY hard and their necklace magic teleported her into that place where twilight was before and celestia met her and turned her into an alicorn.
Also, there's apparently another alicorn in the season finale, so there's that too; and if you use comic canon, Pinkie turned into an alicorn by stealing discord's dimension.
So apparently all you need to become an alicorn is to absorb a suitably powerful enough quanity/artifact of magic and you'll turn into one.
