Because The Expanse is based on a well written and critically acclaim book series with actual thought put into it and its setting, while Gundam is the worlds most ambitious attempt to tell the same story as many times as they can while putting as little effort into it as possible and seeing how long otaku will let them continue to get away with it.

They don't seem to really be in desperate need of anything. It sort of undercuts the supposed setup of the story.

They keep saying that their lives are tough, but they SAY it instead of actually SHOWING it. You can tell me that a character is a tactical genius as many times as you want, but if all of their military plans that we see are stupid I still won't believe you.

MARS is a shithole. And they go about it for four or five episodes shoving emaciated and dying children in your face. The colonies are first world shitholes like Detroit and Atlanta. Nobody is outright starving, but they've gotta sell their soul to the company store to get said food. They're overworked, underpaid, discriminated against for advamcement, and used as fodder for political gain. You don't have to live in a literally lawless fuck hole of an Africa analog for people above you to make life hell.

The problem being is that you cant connect and understand.
3 episodes for the colonies werent enough to build them up.
They keep showing poverty in Mars but in the end that's all they do. Showing background characters. If the cast was actually involved in said problems it would be easier to connect.
Sure it's in their background but it isnt enough.
In the very first episode they break free by killing their abusers and pretty much have fun the rest of the way.

This really could have been a 47 episode series if it properly exploited what it set up in the first episodes.

I haven't followed the TV series but the books are AAA+++S quality. In the class of medium level scifi it's definitely the best series I've ever read(at the super scifi level The Culture will never be surpassed).

Dort and Mars are supposed to be shitholes. Dort did very little to give the audience the impression that the people are oppressed. Gundam is an anime, a visual medium by its very nature. It should SHOW us that these characters are living in squalor. The episode Jupiter Jazz did more to show us the condition of the people Callisto in one 1 minute montage than IBO has done to show the horrible living conditions of the people in Dort.

I do like that the guns seem to have back vents though, even if on something that large they don't matter because while recoil is bad for smaller personal weapons it is not an issue for space craft.
