I don't know if you all recall, but the reason Char actually sorties in the Zeong is because he wants to prove to himself that he's every bit the newtype that Amuro is when in reality he's half the newtype, and generally half the man Amuro is. He's lost sight of himself over a petty rivalry, something that plagues him till he dies.
