Well, it has been 300 years since the big war(that nobody speaks of or knows anything about except that it involved Gundams). The thing was probably collecting dust in his family's treasury since before he was born.

The idea of Gundams have been so long since the war that the concept of specific ones have been mostly forgotten. They probably referred to "legendary mobile suits that brought the end of an era were called gundams" but in the treasury he may have made a connection that the suit seen lately was from a old era and clicked...we have an old suit, took it to people and spruced it up, noticed it looked like Barbatos, found out it was called Gundam Kimaris...dunno i have an imagination. but the mech guy working on barbatos was a mech freak, kind of like working on a model T
