Well it doesn't help when, as the FAQ says it, no one can really judge how much moderation takes place at a given time since most shitposts deleted are deleted without warning. Big (USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST) shots are not the norm. Valvrager isn't around much anymore, for instance, so they probably did something right.
Also, I don't think mod is an actual job. Volunteers have other responsabilities in life than just patrolling a message board and thus can't always be there to help. I might be wrong on that one, though.
