Actually, Nagano's designs didn't become super skinny until the late 90's. The older FSS designs have a lot of chunk to them.

Yep. Mortar Headd's claim to fame wasn't because they were skinny or just knight mecha, those had already been done before. Mortar Headds are unique in how they're designed to look like super intricate mecha that actually wear their armor like clothes, complete with all sorts of strange design motifs. Not at all surprising considering Nagano was a fashion designer.

Nagano's first-ever mecha designs before L-Gaim look like something that popped out of Nausicaa.

Blame it on Evangelion. That show single handedly basically pussiefied/feminized characters and mecha. You can't find a god damn good mecha designer these days in Japan. It's just not possible. Even Kawamori has been led to the dark side. His designs are more feminine than ever. Poor Valkyries.

It's in keeping with tradition. The RX-78 was designed to be more agile and "heroic" than the bulky, "villainous" Zakus.
