No it's not. It's actually a pretty decent show, on the same level of Gundam 0079. Enjoyable story, likable characters (no stupid autistic children around piloting mecha). Has a bit of comedy and tragedy. And best villainess ever.
The first couple of episodes are rough but then it goes very smooth.

I wouldn't put it on the same level as 0079. Story is fairly enjoyable, less so than the original partly because of all the screwing around they did. I didn't really have a problem with autistic children except in Zeta but those two fucksticks at the beginning (Beecha and Oleg if my memory serves) make up for that. Thankfully they turn it around but it doesn't change what they did. Comedy and tragedy could have been handled better by not shoving the first half entirely with comedy and the second half with almost entirely tragedy but I'll admit it wasn't nearly as bad as most people make it out to be. And Haman is a shit.

You're right about the comedy and tragedy part. Tomino wasn't able to use it effectively throughout the series. So you end up with one part being too much comedy and a second part being to much tragedy. Had he intersped a little bit of comedy and tragedy throughout the series evenly it would have been much better. But hey we're talking about Tomino here, what he did in ZZ wasn't something new. Look at Zambot 3. First part of the series easy going, later half absolute tragedy.

Zambot was a lot more pessimistic even in the easy going parts, though, which made the shift much less blatant. Xabungle's a bigger turnaround from comedy to tragedy, but it pulls it off much better (mostly because it's still comedic).

You want a better example, use L-Gaim, because that's Proto-ZZ.
