Why do people say 70s animation (especially Toei) is bad?

I just watched Mazinger Z vs The Ankoku Daishogun bluray version, and the animation seem pretty competent when you consider its age.

In fact, I've seen way less QUALITY in it than your average episode of the original Gundam.

So yeah, if you've never watched 70s shit before, this movie isn't a bad start.

And Kouji is not the paragon of manliness or anything like that as shown in pic related. I blame TTGL for painting a false image of 70s mecha.

>Why do people say 70s animation (especially Toei) is bad?
Because it's literally all 3fps. Characters in like all of the old Toei series fit into this really ugly art direction with shitty noses and eyes, Tetsujin and Mazinger specifically. Plus, you're watching a movie jackass, of course they put money and or effort into it.
>In fact, I've seen way less QUALITY in it than your average episode of the original Gundam.
MOVIE. Also, Gundam looked like shit too.
>So yeah, if you've never watched 70s shit before, this movie isn't a bad start.
Good luck going back.
>And Kouji is not the paragon of manliness or anything like that as shown in pic related. I blame TTGL for painting a false image of 70s mecha.
1) Kouji Kabuto is a disgusting, despicable human being. He is a misogynist, a coward, a douche, and a bully to his brother. I don't know how Toei turned such a laid-back, fun-loving guy into the Alwayd Sunny-esque monster that he was in Toeizinger, but it's a really bad representation of Kouji Kabuto.
2) TTGL is based most heavily in Getter Robo, and Kamina is a mix of Ryouma, Gai, and Guy.

You're talking about a movie though, and that's also probably Mazinger's highest budget movie. Now, watch the first half of the tv show.

70s animation is the best

I think you need to watch more 70s TV shows

JUST

It's not mecha, but I watched Lupin III part 1 recently, and the animation in that was pretty good. A lot better than some of the other 70s tv titles I've seen, like Ashita no Joe, Tekkaman, 0079 and Akage no Anne. Even better than some 80s flicks, like the first Golgo 13 movie. I think it depends on the production, really.

My favorite is when people cherrypick the few good 80s OVAs as if there aren't a million Crystal Triangles out there in between.
>>
>>13782437
Maybe people wouldn't compare OVAs to TV anime if OVAs actually existed anymore.
>>
>>13782433
Animation is more important to Miyazaki than plot or character development.
>>
>>13782464
I should hope so

I haven't gotten around to Part 1 yet, but I know Part 2 looks really good.

I find it heartwarmingly amusing how Luurah is set on subbing every show from his childhood, even the tacky or bad ones.

>>13782464
>>13782479
On that note, Future Boy Conan is amazingly animated, and it's on a TV budget.

>>13782674
Luckily, Discotek licensed Part 2 recently, so it's bound to get better subs.

Because the anime is the original

Underage kiddies that have only seen modern anime and are too shocked by how different retro anime looks to actually observe it and form an opinion other than "it looks old and bad".
>>

This is a pretty rare meme, compadre. I haven't seen it posted in a while.
>>
>>13783703
Not him but are you insinuating that Mazinger Z isn't an original concept/anime? It is one of the most unique and revolutionary series in the history of the medium, freund.
>>
>>13783703

Toei didn't adapted it from the manga.
>>
>>13783720

No. He just have no idea how the media mix system worked. Way before people would do straight adaptations of popular manga titles.
>>
>>13783720
The anime wasn't the original.
>>13783726
No, but they based Toeizinger on Nagai's concept manga.
>>
>>13783782
Explain how it wasn't original. There was literally nothing else like it in existence other than Tetsujin, and it's completely different than Tetsujin.
>>
>>13783827
he's not saying that the anime is not a original concept, he's saying that the manga was made first, and then the anime came later, using the manga as a base.

some words have different meanings depending on the context, anon, go pick up a dictionary
>>
>>13783874
From my post it was clear what I meant, his post was vague. But even though my point was clear he still persists "it's not original", so I have a hard time believing he meant what you're saying.

Well because a lot of it was bad back then.

Even Dezaki works generally had bad animation quality, but he knew how to work around it with his stylistic choices.

Asshole Koji is the best. I wish there was an entire spinoff around him pulling goofy pranks on Baron Ashura.

I'm not him either, but I will insinuate that since it's true.

Eureka Seven is one of maybe 5 early digitally animated shows that doesn't look worse than 70s Toei.
>>
>>13782433
You sure you meant Part 1? Consistently high quality animation is not something I really associate with that one. I certainly wouldn't put it above Akage no Anne.

>>13782953
>Luckily, Discotek licensed Part 2 recently, so it's bound to get better subs.
Hopefully they'll be more like their Lupin III Part 1 subs and less like their Teyandee and Cutie Honey subs.
>>
>>13785744
To be fair in regards to the latter two, the respective companies that supplied the licenses are at fault. Tatsunoko gave them rubbish scripts for Teyandee, akin to what happened with Saban back in the day. As for Toei? They're a pain to deal with in general, but at least it's not as bad as what happened to the initial Fist of the North Star movie release.
