No. Having everyone else in the cast be just as messed up as Shinji is really important to the message of the show. Shinji (and thus you, the viewer) cannot stay closed off and wait around for someone who has no problems of their own and who will never hurt him to come and find him and fix his life for him. That person doesn't exist. Everyone else in the world has their own problems too, everyone else in the world is just as scared of being hurt by others as he is. But letting that keep you from making connections ruins you as a person and leads to failure.

End of Evangelion could have been avoided if the cast had been more open with each other and helped each other, instead of everyone trying to be an island and handle the weight of the world on their own. Misato out of paranoia and depression, Shinji out of fear of being hurt, Asuka out of rage at being abandoned as a child and trying to be independent to the extreme, and Rei because she honestly didn't give enough of a shit to bother trying.

If any of the romantic leads had been emotionally stable, Shinji would have clung to her like a drowning man grasping at driftwood. Indeed, that's more or less what happens when Kaworu shows up. Kaworu was kind and didn't ask anything of him and was everything Shinji desperately wanted to help pull him out of his shitty life, to the point that Shinji seemed pretty willing to go gay for Kaworu just out of yearning for that emotional support and stability and affection.

Of course, then he has to kill him for being an Angel, because the moral of the story is that nobody is perfect.

At that point, Kaworu really didn't have much of a say in the matter. Rei had neutralized his AT Field and made him vulnerable, and his human body doesn't have much in the way of attacks without his AT Field.

Maybe he legitimately was happy that he had failed, because trying to merge with Adam was something he was compelled to do but knew would be very destructive.

Maybe he had just accepted that he had already lost, and wanted to emotionally scar Shinji as much as possible on the way out.

Hard to say, really. We didn't get a chance to know Kowaru all that well, and given how much layering an deception goes into the rest of the characters its hard to take what he says purely at face value.

We never really learn enough about Hikari to find out whether or not she has issues. At a guess, her mom is dead and she is basically raising her sisters herself (she cooks all of the meals at home), but she seems to be able to open up to other people and seek support/be supportive, which in Evangelion is basically the cheat code to being a healthy and functional human being.

That said, we mostly learn about how fucked up the characters are by their internal monologues, and we never got one from Hikari. So who can say?

From what I understand, Shinji has to figure out who is murdering NERV members (starting with Gendo) with Rei as his assistant. If you can find a video online (Vimeo or Dailymotion?) it starts with Rei being attacked by a tentacle girl and you have to beat the shit out of it before Misato can arrive and crash her car into it. Plus I like detective games. No English translation though so I'd probably upload the ISO here and elsewhere if I found a copy.
