Turboranger is kind of formulaic and bland but it tries to do more than Fiveman does.

Though Fiveman does have its ironic moments. There's this one episode where they try to make the monster grow, but fuck up, and the monster just dies outright. No giant robot battle.

I'm fine with formulaic characters. I enjoyed the pure. "Let's have fun with this attitude" and lighthearted comedy of it where the characters actually try the things I thought as a kid of "What would happen if red used blue's morpher?" and the fact that the rangers were actually kids that came up with creative ways to fight the monsters. Like Tokatti punching "and then revives" where I don't see how they pull it off before hand.

Toqger is my favourite series and I am a major fan of Kobayashi's writting.

My problem isn't the formulaic-ness of the characters or monster of the week. I'm fine with a Righteous Red but I want a reason behind that righteousness. Right's was the fact that he was essentially the leader kid who came up with fun ideas, Hiromu was a blunt jack ass who was forced to come to terms with reality at a young age.

Also my problem with Jetman was with one of White Swans episode where she can't fly and Red says "You gotta try harder" and then everyone treated him like a Jackass the rest of the episode.

And honestly I'm a firm believer of the three episode rule. But in my case it's three episodes per cour. So I'll watch three episodes for a single cour show, 6 for two cour, etc. Since sentai is a year round show spanning four cours, that would be twelve episodes to try. But that's just me.

Pretty much. Sentai is the most consistent Toei franchise by far, as long as a show hits all the basic story beats it's going to be at least okay. Rider was much more swingy in quality for a long time, W kind of settled down on a consistent formula for most shows that works well and helps keep the baseline quality up unless it's a real zero-effort production like Wizard. Sentai also has the benefit that you will almost always like at least one member of the team.

I've gotten on board with everything about Jyuohger so far. The blocks thing doesn't bother me anymore, the cast looks great, I'm excited about the writer and whatnot, the only thing left that still bugs me about it is that Sera or Sela or whatever's sharkwoman form looks almost exactly like one of those cookie cutter sexualized sharkgirl avatars people use on Second Life.
