Does a better job of establishing Ypsilon's motives as a character and helping show WHY he's obsessed with Fyanna.

Plus, it makes for a decent bridge piece without feeling like it's pulling in a lot of extra bullshit.

Also mercifully light on 'How much more ridiculous can we make the Absolute Survivor ability?' antics.

If you didn't watch Last Red Shoulder and Big Battle yet, you probably should've. They're the only OVAs you can watch in chronoligical order without it fucking with the show (well, BB sorta does because you have to pause an episode in the middle, watch Big Battle, then unpause and watch the rest of the episode).

I can't help but feel like LRS was meant to be in the show to begin with, but got cut for time and had to be made into an OVA later. Because nothing in it creates the feeling of "we wanted to shove this story in here"

There's also a spinoff series called Armor Hunter Mellolink, but it doesn't feature any of the characters from the main series aside from Chirico appearing as a brief cameo

This isn't fucking 0083 where the only reason it exists (besides sakuga) is to go "oh here's where the Titans came from". No, LRS actually serves a narrative purpose in bridging the first and second arc without feeling like it was wedged in with a crowbar. And if you noticed, I didn't advocate watching Big Battle when it takes place, I just said you COULD, but why would you when it means stopping in the middle of an episode?

LRS and Big Battle I'll grant, but Roots of Ambition and Pailsen Files both run under the assumption that you already know about the secret of 'Absolute Survivor', so they don't even bother trying to hide the fact Chirico has the luck of a god.
If you go into those without that knowledge, it feels less like 'Well, that's...strange but makes sense' and more 'What the actual fuck is this bullshit? I thought this was supposed to be realest of the real.'

Last Red Shoulder: Spoils Ypsilon's introduction and characterization from the TV series which specifically assumes you don't know about him whatsoever. It may be Ypsilon's origin story, but it's obviously directed from a "you already know this character" standpoint. It's a prequel of sorts. End of discussion.

When he appears in the tv series he just shows up as this asshole that hates Chirico for seemingly no reason and is a really good pilot. I'd argue that if LRS was never made then my only thought on the character would be "the fuck was his problem?"

Big Battle kind of has the same problem 0083 has - it's trying to provide information that we didn't really need because the show already explained it well enough.

The end of VOTOMS kind of said all we needed about Chirico and Fyanna's decision. He killed Wiseman and made an enemy of the Secret Society, between his and Fyanna's abilities, the two would be hunted for the rest of their lives. That's all we really needed. We didn't need a giant protracted fight with a guy who felt like an attempt to bring Gosterro into the VOTOMS universe to prove that point. The final arc made it pretty clear why they'd be hunted already.

I mean, it's nice from a combat perspective, but really, outside of MAYBE that last scene of Rochina, BB is a lot of redundant fluff.
