It's a prequel, but not really a prequel, Fujisaki is just starting from episode 4 of the original OVA, or rather the 3rd chapter of the first novel instead of starting with The Battle of Astarte. Yang's child story is the one that was covered in the Gaiden OVAs although that too was in the first novel volume.

I don't see what the big fuss is about. The original was full homosex, and so is this.
