That's Yamato Tamashii. Yamato being an ancient name for Japan and their legendary Emperor's surname which this series loosely based on, ancient Japanese legends.

Well, time to dive into a world of CGI-induced eye cancer.

Fucking Webdiver. It was broadcasted in my country in the early 00s. I had no adsl, it was the first mecha anime on tv in about a decade and yet I couldn't get past episode 5 or so. Worst shit ever.

Well, that was surprisingly good (but then again, so was the series).
Ending was quite a cop out, though.

I'm at episode four now and I'm not really sure what to think about it except GOOD LORD, THAT FUCKING CGI.

The low quality clips I watched on Youtube years ago didn't do it justice - those models and effects go way beyond cheap, lazy shit and look like the stuff I did years ago when I dicked around with a cheap 3D modelling program.
Zentrix came out like one year later and blows it out of the water.
In fact, some of the mech battles in it still hold up pretty well even to this day.

As for the plot, I somehow get a BASToF Lemon vibe from it with its "what happens in the digital world happens in the real world" premise which is actually pretty amusing since both shows ran at almost the same time and are even set in almost the same year.


Oh well, at least it'll work as background noise show that I can watch while doing something else.

On the bright side, maybe this means Webdivers successfully avoided the ninjas (using YT, of all things, as camouflage) and can move to something else they'd like to do.

Oh, and amusingly enough, Radix (who animated Webdiver) also did Divergence Eve. Can you even blame them for giving up on using CGI altogether after that?

The subs for the show itself are far from HKsub quality and in fact, I'd say that the OVA subs here are probably worse.
Still, they feel as if they were based on a dubbed version (my best guess is Spain) since some characters have different names but ones that fit them, something you'd expect in a localised show, and also has a bunch of light cases of Woolseyism like when Takeru jokingly calls Ouka "Big Mac" due to his size.
