Should I just learn japanese if I want to watch this?
Never say never. I'm sure that Luurahor Starseekerwill pick it up some years down the road. Besides, it's simpler to learn Italian in the meantime (because that country is too lucky with such shows).

Why have I not thought of this before

You get two giant robot shows in one!
As someone who learned japanese quite a bit of time ago and watched a bunch of old shows to polish up on my hearing skills, let me tell you that Go-Shogun is one of those shows that really gets portrayed as a much better version of itself when it gets into SRW. It wasnt terrible or anything but dont go in expecting any of those old gems because its subpar at best.

So, going slightly off-subject for a bit and for curiosity's sake, which remaining unsubbed 80s shows (among those you've seen at least) do you think are any good, anime or otherwise?

Of all the untranslated 80s mecha shows, Acrobunch is the only one that's actually worth your time.

Nigga, just learn latin. It's easy as fuck, and then you will have a caveman understanding of italian, french, and spanish... thus expanding your ability to watch foreign subbed anime.
It works anon, I promise.
Each language is just a nuanced latin.. but with that base, you can figure most of it out pretty easily

So is dragonar... and don't you DARE tell me it's subbed.
Whoever subbed it learned Japanese by swallowing Japanese cum, then got hit with a hammer.
Burning heart! Burning heart!
...... when will you get the love you deserve?

There are two subbed episodes.
