Anyway, I wish we got a competent Nemesis Prime or Evil Prime copy who does so well it actually forces Megatron to team up with the Autobots. I admit I have a soft spot for Nemesis Prime and this particular Scourge, as he was the first Transformers toy I ever had. With his tanker trailer transforming into a battle base, and being a near opposite copy of Prime was the coolest shit ever. Moreso when said copies prove more capable (don't think it happened in the TF-verses, but I do like it in other various Sci-Fi works).

The bulk of the franchise is written, storyboarded, and originally-voiced by westerners (although more of them are Canadian than most might think). That's almost always what Soundwave is though. Shockwave also usually isn't quite like Starscream when he is more rebellious. He'll work with Megatron if it plays in his favor. Starscream usually won't.

Prime was a fucking mess behind the scenes. Despite that I really like it, but I think that's a testament to the writers and the animators. Armada is on the whole not a very good cartoon, but it has a lot of really excellent ideas and characters.

A Starscream who becomes and Autobot and redeems himself hasn't been done since, and things like Sideways playing both sides, Scavenger being a double agent, and that car guy who was an ex-Autobot left to die by his friend were all cool stories that didn't get explored as much as they should have.

I think my favorite Armada character comes down to Demolishor, though. He's not to bright, he's only good for blowing things up, and he's pretty much the lowest rung on the Decepticon totem pole. There's an episode where all the 'cons are at base and everyone has gone off to their corners to scheme against each other, and Demllishor is just wandering the halls trying to clean up the mess all the others left all over the base because nobody else is going to do it.

He's just the simple put-upon enlisted soldier in an army full of mad generals.

Plus his tank treads become Jackboots.

I just marathoned the game and good lord was that one of the highlights. It was like that one fight in ZOE 2, but without the basic decency of a lock-on camera and an overpowered upgrade.
I played through it as Optimus first, and I plan on playing through as Grimlock next. I love the fact that he has grapple moves, even if those won't be useful on some enemies and bosses, and his running in Dinosaur mode is the best thing.

Couple of things.

First, Willis has been a webcomic author since the days of internet 1.0. He's done several full series, but it was during his time doing Shortpacked! (2008ish-2013 or so i'd say) that he became known for using his comic as a way to lambast the Transformers Collectors community for being difficult to please, swift to complain, and generally having a severe lack of understanding in the basic economics behind the toy business and a completely off-based sense of nostalgia for original figures against modern ones. He's stated such "Controversial" opinions as third party TF designers being thieves, plastic being okay, and so on all through the comic.

Frankly i'm all for that, as TF collectors are some of the most autistic manchildren this side of 4Chan. But he /also/ became much more of a social justice crusader during this time, using the comic as a soapbox to complain about whatever was going on in comics, transformers, nerd culture or just plain real-life as it applies to sexism, racism, and homo- or transphobia.

His current webcomic is a new college series that occasionally dips into whole arcs about that kind of crap and he himself is just incredibly insufferable and sanctimonious about the whole damn thing.

Just finished Super God Masterforce.

God Ginrai is the greatest. Optimus Prime with a rocket punch, a shoulder cannon, and a jetpack? Get out of town. That's beyond awesome.

It's also kind of interesting how Ginrai starting out as newcomer and rising to be the commander kind of presages the character arcs for Optimus Primal and Animated Prime, who also started as relative neophytes before growing into the G1 Prime style of stalwart hero.

Yeah, I loved Masterforce, my favorite of the TF anime. Had a nice ongoing plot, a fairly well developed cast (even on the Decepticon side) and some nice action scenes. My only complaint is that some of the other Autobot Godmasters should have gotten more development and the Autobot Pretenders (aside from Metalhawk) fall by the wayside midway through the series.

There's a lot of weirdness to IDW but I feel like for a while it was the strongest the franchise had been for a long time. We were getting characters treated like characters with Star Trek style romps in MTMTE and postwar upheavals ala DS9 in RiD. My biggest beef is with the changes to Cybertron's history and the way the race works, like the history and the creation of the race. I'm honestly glad they didn't go with the Aligned idea of the Primes (they're Greek Gods and Optimus is Jesus, reincarnation and all,) but I'm a strong proponent of the cartoon's origin where they were created as consumer goods and found sentience. I've always felt like the story of a race and their god being created by another race before making their own destiny in the universe to be a much more interesting sci-fi story than atechnogenesis or a totally mystical origin.

Transformers are fiction written by humans, about human problems, so they reflect us. Trying to attach hard scifi traits to them always ends up weird and off putting and alienating for this franchise since its such soft scifi in the first place.

It's also odd how the "alien robots" thing only ever comes up in regard to gender and sexuality. Biology, physiology, language, and anything else never come up. Everyone has a humanoid body, two hands, five fingers, a human face, etc.- even cases like Whirl or Shockwave are retconned into once being "normal" instead of just being different model machines. Everyone speaks English, uses English or Latin terms for things, and things like that.

We understand though that that's just a shorthand for the reader to understand and relate to these characters and their world, though. Only in the last couple years has gender not been treated as part of the human condition.

Arcee started getting better when she started hanging out with the Dinobots and carved herself an Autobot symbol, but she's still too edgy. But Furman's "no girls allowed" thing is pretty shit, especially since there's been girls in the series since year two.

To be fair, depending on WHO you ask, that is also the case for most of the characters in IDW.
Some Star Saber fans might be upset with his portrayal, some Ultra Magnus fans might balk at the idea of Minimus, some Megatron fans might be seething in rage about Autobot Megatron, and average TF fans might see the relationships in current IDW as unnecessary, and so on.
You can't please anyone afterall.

Magnus/Ambus didn't change anything other than saying White Prime wasn't canon, which its not ever really been; Ratchet said that the Magnus we know has always been Ambus, so we never knew him any other way.

Megatron got a dramatic change, yes, but that was part of a character arc. He evolved into an Autobot for plot reasons. Arcee was just introduced into IDW as another character.

Star Saber is a different can of worms. He did get fucked up, and really should have been a different character. From what I understand he was based on old Fanfic characterizations from before translated media was available. I'm not sure if Star Saber being a zealot was an actual rumor passed around at the time by people or if it was just created out of nothing, but I've heard it was pretty common back in the BBS days.

Now that we know otherwise, though, its jarring as shit. If anything Star Saber is closer to Thunderclash. IMO, they should retcon that guy as someone naming himself Star Saber after the character (or the sword...?)

Thing is not everyone share the same idea about what a character should be. If IDW change a character or plot to their own liking, some will definitely see it as an improvement or a fuck up, but not everyone.

Cybertron Arcee wasn't that far away from G1 Arcee, and Animated Arcee is still in character with her original characterization too. Prime Arcee isn't edgy at all; she's just a bit more of a soldier.

Characters change and grow, but IDW Arcee just isn't Arcee. She's pretty much Furman spitting on the idea of Arcee again.

In those cases it has more to do with name copyrights. The difference is that Arcee is supposed to be G1 Arcee. Prime Breakdown is not supposed to be a Stunticon.
