1. We have Tomahawks as main battle tanks with legs, Spartans for close quarters combat, Defenders and Phalanxes for anti-aircraft, and the Monster for long-range artillery, so what are Cheyennes used for?
2. Why is it the only Destroid made by SMS fifty-one years later?

>SMS
NUNS uses it not SMS. And because it's cheap. The destroid is an aging obsolete design so they use it for really cheap and simple defense.

1. Cheyenne is ADR. It predates the Defender.
2.They used Cheyenne Mk IIs. And among the various improvements and changes is the addition of particle cannons, so the Mk II is more multi-role. They probably figured the only needed Cheyenne Mk IIs, especially being a colony fleet still wandering around.

Pretty much what the others said. Basically, they rolled the other designs into the Cheyenne Mk. II.
Well, except for the Spartan. They rolled that into VFs by equipping them with close-combat weapons.
I still hope for Spartan shenanigans in a future installment, but seeing as Delta is 1 year short of 60 after Space War 1, some good'ol-fashioned ass-whoopin' with the de culcha stick seems an unlikely feature this time around.

Aren't Cheyenne IIs used when SMS' Macross Quarter uses Macross Attack?

1. Thanks
2. If Cheyenne IIs are more multi-role, then how does it fare in close quarters combat? I mean, in the Frontier TV series, Vajra sneaked into Island One. Wouldn't upgraded Spartans have been useful in such a situation?
