The issue with Robin Hood is he is folklore that has been attributed to multiple real people. So you have a lot of people claim Robin Hood was a real person but in reality Robin Hood is many people who got the folktale latched on to their names.

The first warning sign is Shunpei, who comes pretty shortly in. But he's a pretty stock annoying sidekick character, tons of good shows have characters like that. He'll grow out of it, you assume. He doesn't. Rinko never starts being useful or even does anything vaguely related to police work after her introduction. Koyomi never develops as an actress, in fact she's like a black hole of acting ability that just sucks the life out of everyone else's performances if they stand too close to her.

The next warning sign is about twenty episodes in, when the Gate of the week plots stop being quite so personally tailored. There's actually some really good concepts in the first few arcs of Wizard about what could be the worst thing that could happen to someone without actually killing them. But after around twenty episodes they ran out of ideas, and almost every Phantom after that tries something once, fails, gives up on the scheme entirely and starts trying to kill the Gate while yelling "LET THE FEAR OF DEATH DRIVE YOU TO DESPAIR!".

The third big warning sign is around the same time, when you notice that nothing has happened. Aside from Phoenix getting the boot and Gremlin coming in to replace him, there are no events of any significance to the running narrative in Wizard until around the episode 40 mark. Wizard's plot is the most sluggish of any Rider series barring Den-O, and when the story actually does get in gear it does so by committing one of the worst cases of character assassination of the lead I've ever seen. Haruto loses any personality he had in favor of saying two lines over and over, starts making just awful, morally repugnant decisions, and basically spends the whole last act fighting with the villain over who gets to do the thing they both want to do, both ignoring the objections of the person they want to do it to.

I first dropped Wizard just after Flame Dragon's debut. Then I picked up KR again with Gaim.
When the time came for Gaim x Wizard Movie War Feud, I hadn't actually watched Wizard, but I knew the basic gist of its plot from /m/.

Thanks to that, I was able to enjoy Wizard's part of the movie (which I think was very well done), by imagining the beautiful relationship between Haruto and Koyomi that the movie suggested.
I'm probably not making much sense, but the flashback scenes and fighting in Haruto's memory made for sufficient headcanon fuel.

I'm holding Wizard to the standards set by the three shows before it and the three shows after it, compared to which it's incredibly lacking in every aspect save suit designs and the secondary Rider. Nitou is great, and Wizard is entirely watchable whenever he's around, but one good character does not a good or even a decent show make. In every other regard W, OOO, Fourze, Gaim, Drive, Ghost are all miles better than Wizard.

Well, Takeru earned Makoto's loyalty with his sacrifice, but Makoto still haven't learned the lesson to share his problem with Takeru and handle it together.

Other shows have rushed endings, weird decisions, etc., but none of them had them as bad as Wizard. Near the end of Wizard's run, some people prayed that the series would never make a show where every episode is split into two parts ever again.

Besides, even if you take away the bad stuff, the good stuff is a little underwhelming. You've got:
- Mostly good costumes (with catchy belt jingles)
- Donuts
- Wiseman's trio of Phantoms (I know some kooky kids liked Gremlin when the show was airing)
- 2-3 stories that were really interesting after episode 20
- That odd stretch of episodes where Nitoh and Haruto were bros for a little bit

And that's it.

I think it's a fine gimmick for selling volumes of small crappy toys, works fine in the show too. Actually it really annoys me that they took such a neat, clean gimmick as Wizard's and wasted it on a turd of a show. Man, the worst crime committed in Wizard is being a huge lost opportunity.

Part of that crime is lacking any real lore or foundational premise, which a show like Wizard can benefit immensely from. Like one of the things I like about Ghost is how they are building a lore surrounding the Ganma. We don't know everything yet, but at least it feels like the writers care about the Ganma and ghost shit.

Whereas in Wizard magic is little more than an aesthetic motif. The Magic and Phantoms have not real history. The Generals are really just rogue Phantoms who could have been any set of Phantoms. The leader isn't even magical and just mimics it just to set up a lame reveal and nothing more.

For a long, ongoing show about magic, you really need to go deep into that shit. Get as deep into it as Wizard's soundtrack did, which made everything seem more fantastical than it really was.

Like one thing the summer movie did right was actually building history and an evironment around "Gate magic". The main show didn't need to go as far as suddenly making the world where magic is the norm. It should however gone like this:

In this setting the final boss is more imposing because after witnessing all this suffering, this guy basically found the cure to cancer (creating magic with no life threatening catch) and is keeping it to himself to achieve his selfish goals via violent means.

Depends. A fair few Rider shows take a couple of episodes to get really in there with what is going on. Even the best of them like Kuuga suffers from that. Kiuga has its first couple two parters just to set up the his basic 4 forms. Wouldn't want anybody to wait a week through each of those. Once it gets to Godai's teacher it picks up and just getting one episode in further is satisfying enough.
