Gunpla / Plamo General

***READ THE GUIDE***

https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1Tr8UyF2Xg5Ojqw0sxcO7oIG7IIsJPes3lMO5pHZKu5o

***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Our next Group Build!

Field Repair

Basically what this means is that rather than the mobile suit being fresh out of a factory, it's quite the opposite. Whether it's trudging through dense jungles or dodging debris in asteroid belts, your mobile suit has seen some better days.
You've been out in the field for quite a long time now, nearly half a year of active duty in the front lines and your personal mobile suit's pretty banged up. What's worse is the fact that there isn't a maintenance bay within several thousand kilometers of your local area that's capable of making any major repairs. Your unit's engineering crew has resorted to patch work and jury-rigging to keep your machine operational. Stray fire might have crippled its legs and arms or otherwise dealt considerable damage to a mobile suit's systems meanwhile some units have simply lost bits of armor and panels to the elements and have been forced to patch weld metal sheets over the exposed inner workings.
In any case it's beaten to hell but somehow you and your team have somehow kept it chugging along and now command's ordered all units operating in your theatre to fall back to form a defensive line against the enemy offensive.

Isn't MC's stuff are their own design tho? While DM just straight up copy other brand's stuff.
>>
>>13736839

I think MC bases some of their stuff from certain resin kits, like their Hi-Nu and their SD Nightingale.
>>
>>13736839
Most of the third party plastic models you see from china are likely to just be abs versions of resin kits with joints or frames added on.

>>13736992
Nah most of the non-MG SEED kits were not the best, just go for the 1/100 Dragon Momoko Akatsuki. It might be third party but it beats out the HG by a long shit.
>>
>>13736986
How do you Google that?
It's a picture, and I want something similar in design aesthetic. ..
>>

The only HG SEED kits you should be grabbing aside from the HGCE stuff are the Stargazer kits, the Daggers, the Murasame, and any of the new kits made during the SEED Remaster's airing (M1 Astray, LaGowe, the newer Red/Blue/Gold frames).

how do I get as good as this guy when it comes to painting and weathering my gunpla? My Zaku doesn't look anything like that despite using the same paints this guy uses

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVwgUoRCU9Y

is it just an art skill that you acquire after years of building gunpla? Or is it like drawing/painting and only a select few can make it look fantastic
>>
>>13737508
doesn't really matter if you have the same paints. it's kind of like having the mindset that if you have the same paints as an artist you should be able to paint like them.

art and gunpla are the same in that they take practice. neither has anything to do with innate talent
>>

Something like that you would have to scratchbuild to keep the price that low.

Maybe try the /tg/ /wip/ thread.

Does anyone have a finished hguc Tryon 3 that they can take some pictures of? I think it's a pretty cool looking mech, but I've heard that the quality (especially the lion on the chest) is questionable at best and the pics I've seen on various retail sites don't do a very good of showing off the model.

Not to discourage you, because I also like MGs and the GP line, but every damn one of the 0083 MGs are dated and terrible. If you HAVE to get any of them, the 02 at least looks big and intimidating, even if it is a brick.

I'd recommend the Geara Doga, it's the most current MP zeek MG. If you want a Zaku, grab one of the hi-mo variants.

Some stuff like the guards above the red elbow points and the small "skirts" or whatever on the sides of the bottom of the legs falls off quite easily, at least on mine. Some things are stiff on it at first, wings doesn't move too much without falling off or feeling pretty loose, feels kind of frail because of all the shit that moves around on it, things pops out of place just a bit so you'll need to put them back again, and it can be tricky to get the gun to stay somewhat locked in its hand, since it doesn't have a peg, and only the thumb can be moved around.

Just problems I have with mine, for all I know I might've fucked it up while building though. It's beautiful anyhow.
>>

the scopedog parts came from an old toy i got from nycc years ago. i snapped it in half, carved out the center so it would fit around the zaku's head then just glued it together and sanded down the seam. the scalp is still replaceable so its not a permanent mod to preserve the playablity.

but i'm waiting til i get bluetac for him to give his cloak a weighed down look.

My Guncannon ended up with nub marks all over it because i, being a dumb shit, got a 100 grit sandpaper. As such, not only are there nub marks, but there are also nasty scratchy marks near some nubs. The 108 sticker ended up a bit croocked and looks like shit, and finally, i lost one antenna and broke the other one. Realizing that it looked like shit, i decided to cut directly next to the parts when i built the F91, which caused warping in some parts (thankfully, it's hard to notice from far away). Additionally, i might have gone overboard with the panel lining on the F91. At least the panel lining on the Guncannon looks half decent. I'd post pics, but the only camera i have is my cellphone cam, and it's the most potato camera you'll ever see in your life.

Still, i'll finally be getting tweezers, and x-acto knife and proper grit sandpaper for my upcoming Graze, so i've been feeling much more confident lately.
>>
>>13738333
I just built the MG RX78-2 Ver 3.0

and god DAMN it is a sweet kit, some panels are a bit flimsy, because how is it set. also mutiple shades of panels make it downright amazing.

though I gotta buy the decals for it, I'd never stain it with stickers.
>>
>>13738351
Also, i got distracted during the F91 build, so the fan blew the sticker sheet away and my dog stole most of the stickers. Thankfully, the F91 shoulder stickers were able to be salvaged, but i still lost a ton of stickers.

>using an old toilet seat cover to put painted parts on and let dry
>denubbing small funnel parts when I had a cold and then a sneeze ends up with me slicing into my index finger

Fun times. But the whole thing is a long-ass learning process and you pick up stuff along the way so yeah.

I don't know, I am very nervous about the extra stuff I added to it. I decided to do the outlines on the hips, the inner circles, and the back of the legs like how it's presented in the builders manual.

Don't care, desu. Gunpla is a hobby. Everyone has different tastes. I don't compare my kits to anyone elses because the experience is different for everyone. I don't have anything to prove.

>How long have you been building? Do you enjoy building?
I starting building when I was 14/15 or so? I dropped MSIA for high grades. Building is my least favorite part because of all the effort it takes.

>If so many people hate you, why do you keep posting?

Yes I know I'm taking the bait.

...I see.
I really don't think you deserve all the hate you get. I agree with many of your viewpoints, and maybe it's because i'm new, but every time i came here for help, you always did your best to help. When i complained about stickers, you were the first to point out that i was using the wrong kind of pincers, when i needed help choosing a good beginner kit you responded almost instantly with the Revive, and you gave out some pointers to a bootleg Moonlight Butterfly part in case i got the Turn A (although i don't think it looks very good, you did try to help, and i appreciate that). However, i can see why people are annoyed by you. Even if you intend to do good, you often send across the message that it's okay to be mediocre, or to stay at your current skill level. And that's fine and dandy, but by sending across that message, it will often seem that you are telling people to be mediocre, and that can stifle the growth of possibly talented builders. Additionally, even if you don't particularly get bothered by it, your builds often end up looking mediocre, and most people come here to see the pretty model images; they look at yours and either think it's shit (spawning more people who hate you), that it's fine to be mediocre (and i've already explained why this can be a troubling message), or, like me, that you're not very good at building Gunpla (which doesn't seem to bother you, since it seems you draw enjoyment from another aspect of gunpla). Also, since you don't like the actual building part you can come across as lazy, and to some people it might seem you are a wealhy asshole throwing money away, and i can definitely see why a person like that would piss people off.

Overall, i can definitely undestand why you get hate, but i think the hate you get is very disproportionate. Your kits look mediocre at best, and mediocre at worst (at least in my opinion, and it seems to be the general opinion around here too). They're definitely not terrible or horrifying, and while you can be annoying sometimes, you're also not as bad as people make you out to be.

I still have a few more questions to ask though. If you don't have anything to prove, and you'e not planning to improve at it, why do you post images of your kits? What is your favorite part of Gunpla?

>>
>>13739486

Not everyone feels the need to improve, even from the very basics of any hobby. I build to pass the time. I paint and detail and weather and pose my models to pass the time. I don't submit my models to any competition and while I do post things looking for help on certain things the only person whose opinion I care about when it comes to my models is my own.

It's all about enjoying any hobby however you like. If you are having fun building your way that's great, but not everyone wants to do it your way. Some enjoy the process of learning and improving while others just want to snap a model together and are happy with what we might consider unfinished but if its not your model why care?

It's late and I'm not proofreading that shit, I hope it makes sense. I'm gonna go pass out now.

At least half of the hate comes from when snapfag would constantly spam the same blurry, bloated pictures of the same kits in every thread, both on /m/ and /toy/. There's also the holier-than-though attitude, the /v/eddit-tier reaction images/maymay-spewing, and refusal to admit when he's wrong. Those last two points are part of why snapfag's hated in other parts of /m/, not just /gpg/.

>If you don't have anything to prove, and you'e not planning to improve at it, why do you post images of your kits?
I like to share them with people. I'm a 4chan regular. Have been for ten years or so. You don't need a reason to do anything.

>What is your favorite part of Gunpla?
I like Gundam. That's really all there is to it.
>>
>>13739572

If that's the case, i'd say our second builds are equally bad, although yours might look a bit more jarring due to it being an RG.
>>
>>13739583
Ill keep that in mind, I had a hard time doing stickers for RG wing zero but when I snipped some decals I got for him I had found it a lot easier to apply. Makes sense the same would go for stickers

>I seriously doubt I have more than a couple haters.
Buddy, it's a lot more than a couple

Luckily I think you're ability to attention whore is dying down. It took you posting that shit tier sazabi 5 times to get that desperate attention you were looking for and then you kept riding the wave and saw more opportunities to post some pictures of your shitty kits. If you really weren't an attention whore you would buy action figs instead of making kits since there's no building involved (which is your least favorite step as you stated) and you certainly can afford them since you have spent so much money on all those different kits you have. But you won't do that, because since it's not plamo you won't have a legitimate reason to post in this thread and get that attention you so desperately crave.

>>13739546
He's an attention whore end of story. His "helpful tips" posts when he isn't spamming his shit builds are just more cries for attention. If you're new here the best thing to do is not feed into his attention cravings. He just likes to stir shit up, this has been made obvious by his other posts outside of the gunpla plamo thread.

I'm having some issues seam welding shit. I'm putting the plastic cement in between the two pieces before sticking them together, but the damn seam line refuses to be removed fully even with a large amount of sanding. What could I be doing wrong?
>>
>>13739668
Sometimes you need a lot of cement. Sometimes you need to just say fuck it and grab yourself some putty.
>>
>>13739677
I'm building the old rising gundam kit. I have putty, but I've only used it once before and in a way that hides it. I'm planning on painting it, but not until later, and I'm assuming the putty will require me to paint over it after sanding, correct?

The worst part is upon cutting out the really small lower visor for the Raiden, the goddamn thing broke (I questioned Koto's plastic quality that day) and I managed to fix it with whatever was left of it plus some small scraps which happened to fit his face.

There's still the RNA version of this fucker in a local store and when I have the budget for it I'm totally going for it. Sucks that it doesn't have the huge lasers but electric shoulder forks aren't a bad replacement.

ugh I fucking tried koto kits once. CR-C90U3 AC. the plastic is so fucking brittle that it creaks everytime you try to move/pose it. puts fucking bootlegs to shame. and a year later of having it displayed, the polycaps cracked.

are the more recent koto kits still like this shit?
>>
>>13739805

The Raiden is a good showcase of that. The legs in general are rock fucking solid and hell, even the laser emitters on the shoulders are.

And then you get parts like the arms which are kinda loose and has kinda weird joints but at least it goes up to 90 when you slide it out. The hands are weird that they're separated but it's actually just the goddamn closed fist. And the thumb doesn't plug in well (IIRC I glued that shit in on mine)

>>
>>13739818
It depends on which Koto kit you get. I heard good things about Frame Arms, but have no clue. Here's what I have experience with:
>Their Muv-luv kits are alright, similar to HG with good detail here and there. They have pre-applied decals and their arm joints have this rubber ball in socket connection... which is terrible for when you're trying to pose because it falls out easily during moving (those they hold static pose of any kind just fine). Their back-thrusters fall of easily too. Certain parts were a fucking pain to connect due to how they are designed. The arms have a weird two-bit connection piece holding them together. Allows for two points of articulation.
>Zoid kits: some of the top-notch kits I ever had, basically the RG-quality work with solid articulation and solid hold of parts.
>>
>>13739563
Always hated those fucking feet, still do.
>>
>>13739165
yeah, after 9 hours at work I really don't want to have to set up the airbrush, get my mask on, compressor running mix paint and get painting it fucking sucks

and this.. is how my backlog builds, decent cashflow for gunpla but no time/energy to build/paint stuff

what is that light grey? The tamiya sparkly effect is pretty hard to see on those. Also what gold is that?

HG Lightning Gundam comes with no backpack. Skip straight to Back Weapon System 2, it looks a lot better than 1, has a ton of boosters, and comes with a railgun attachment.
