Are those hexagonal ports on the wing's engines supposed to be micro missile launchers like the eight on each leg?

Don't forget the ones in the shoulders.

Other then it being a series' trademark. I don't know why they bother with micromissiles anymore. As of the end of Frontier and Delta. All VFs shoot Super Dimensional Energy beam weapons and mini black hole bullets.

Could be close to the same reason the US military can't get rid of the nose guns on jets. The pilots demand them despite their incredibly limited use.

Well, the missiles are also enhanced with MDE so they aren't exactly bad.

Besides, the missiles can track targets, against targets like Ghosts or VFs, it helps, at least they will force the enemy into evasive maneuvers.
And the multi target lock helps in clearing hordes of enemies.

Because in Vietnam the rules of engagement demanded visual confirmation on enemy airplanes so they had to close to gun range to shoot them down.
