Why the fuck Ketchupman doing this mass execution in some random tunnel with special lights brought in so they can see what they're shooting.

Now poor Lise will have to drag all the bodies out, bury them, carry the lights away, and mop the blood off the floor so they can use it again.

I mean I like miljargon quite a lot but the show itself just looks meh.

The story content is more engaging but it just looks like some mid 00's half-assed animation project. As meager as the budgets must be for Muv Luv anime, Satelight had more lively CGIwork going on in TE.
>>
>>13733768
Nakahara and Ono both said working at Satelight for TE was really fun for them but I don't get that vibe with Liden. It seems like both TE's directors had a huge boner for Muv-Luv so they did the best they could with what they had.

What's baffling is that you'd have think with TE's VN doing decently as it did and the anime more then simply breaking even that age/ixtl would've fronted more money to the production budget for Schwarzemarken.

When TE wasn't going off model, it looked pretty much the same as SM. I honestly want to believe you guys are just being facetious, because this feels like it's turning out so nicely compared the collasal disappointment of TE.
>>
>>13733794
The CGI though.

Whoever is handling the CGI is not giving me a good impression, it's merely serviceable when it should be more than that.

PLANEBOTS SHOULD MOVE WITH PASSION, NOT LIKE THEY HAVE LIMP DICKS.
>>
>>13733794
I enjoyed TE for what it was, both the ups and downs. I'm not getting any sort of feeling that Liden is going to try to flesh out Schwarzemarken more then what their paid to do. And given how little their being paid for this, Schwarzemarken is already shaping up to be a huge disappointment.

>colossal disappoint of TE

There wasn't much hype for TE to begin with, so that's not really true. Besides the CGI, animation, and fights in TE once the 2nd director took over the story where much better from Kamtchaka and onwards.

Even the early episodes of TE actually look better then Schwarzemarken's first one.
>>
>>13733803
To me it looked like they moved with weight. Admittedly TE did do the mech CG very well, but this looked fine to me; and thank fuck this is not as bad as Origin.

I wonder if ANN is trolling on purpose with their synopsis of Schwarzesmarken in the Winter Preview Guide.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/preview-guide/2016/winter/schwarzes-marken/.97428

>In an alternate universe where the fallout of World War II led to a global split that left East Germany and West Germany in charge of the entire left and right hemispheres of the earth, the real war is only just beginning.

>In 1967, the space race resulted in contact with the hostile BETA aliens hiding out on the moon, and their assault on a world too freshly divided turned the earth into a frozen hell.

>Now specialized squadrons from East Germany, otherwise known as the German Democratic Republic, are dispatched to try and clean up the battlefields with mech-driven heavy artillery.

>The 666th squadron, known as the Schwarzesmarken, are the strongest in the corp, but their integrity may be under threat of compromise thanks to infiltration by the Stasi, who want to turn the war into a vehicle for East Germany's supremacy.

>Captain Theodor Eberbach, fearful of such an outcome, begrudgingly enlists the help of West German transplant Katia Waldheim to turn the tide of this global disaster.

It reads like something written by someone who watched the first episode while stoned.
>>
>>13733920
TE doesn't actually improve on the second half.

It replaces an unfitting opening for ear rape but other than that the quality remains the same.
>>
>>13733859
She and others who were indoctrinated like her were assigned to be spies for Axemann and killers, using whatever means to get their information or to get close to their target, including sex.

One of Lise's reasons for thinking Theo would hate her is because of everything that happened to her and things she did in order to keep Axemann from just hunting Theo down and having him killed.
>>
>>13733930
You are blind then.
>>
>>13733831
>the skillset for animating has been all over the place
Yeah, it's still pretty awful. This is partly thanks to 3D animation still being absolutely horrible to work on the few times I've worked with it in the past with other people have been really painful and there aren't very many people capable of producing good results.

>>13733930
The first half was badly handled but had the more interesting story, the second half was just boring. The tournament arc felt like it'd never end.

The budget seemed to have completely evaporated too because the QUALITY just got worse and worse in the second half.
>>
>>13733928
How is it even possible to get this many things wrong in one paragraph?
>>
>>13733978
Outside of the first half of the first cour of TE, the quality was worse between episodes 7 to 11. There's noticeable improvement in animation per episode that remained in the show, a lot less QUALITY until the Onsen episode, and a lot better visuals.

The entire Russia, Blue Flag, and Terrorist arcs were the best part about the anime.
>>
>>13733984
The Russia arc was definitely the best part of the anime and seeing that experimental gun get used was probably the high point of the whole series; the Terrorist arc was fundamentally stupid but I kind of enjoyed it until the part where Yuuya threw a pebble at a car and it exploded.

I seem to recall the BDs did fix up a lot of the really bad stuff but I couldn't stomach sitting through more than a few episodes to watch it again.

Jokes aside, pretty sure they're not going to start actually targeting allies. Just that in the context of detecting BETA matter they'll have greater differentiation in normal, live, BETA matter, and seemingly inert BETA matter slathered onto a walking pile of electronics.

Besides, in most cases those Destroyers charging you and getting mixed in with Grapplers and Tanks are the only things keeping you from being fried when you're on level ground. Do you really want them to start committing friendly fire? Not only are you going to get decimated, you can't even fire back because of the volume of penetrated BETA bodies blocking you.

These guys are 3 meters tall. If they wanted to /ff/, we're going to be in a hell lot of trouble. They have way more meatshields than we can ever have in TSFs. If they centered around /ff/.

>In an alternate universe where the fallout of World War II led to a global split that left East Germany and West Germany in charge of the entire left and right hemispheres of the earth, That's wrong and I can only ascribe it to horrendous misunderstanding of the map at the start and zero knowledge of history.

>In 1967, the space race resulted in contact with the hostile BETA aliens hiding out on the moon, and their assault on a world too freshly divided turned the earth into a frozen hell.
I can only assume they thought a frozen Eastern Europe meant the whole world was frozen.

>Now specialized squadrons from East Germany, otherwise known as the German Democratic Republic, are dispatched to try and clean up the battlefields with mech-driven heavy artillery.
The mechs aren't carrying heavy artillery.

>The 666th squadron, known as the Schwarzesmarken, are the strongest in the corp, but their integrity may be under threat of compromise thanks to infiltration by the Stasi, who want to turn the war into a vehicle for East Germany's supremacy.
I must have missed the part where the Stasi wanted to rule the world

>Captain Theodor Eberbach, fearful of such an outcome, begrudgingly enlists the help of West German transplant Katia Waldheim to turn the tide of this global disaster.

Why did you faggots lie about her?

I got hyped thinking we'd get a complex villain that you could even sympathize with to an extent, but all I got was a sadistic murdering bitch. It was claimed that she was like Yuuko and did what she did because she believed she had to, not because she personally enjoyed it, yet the anime shows her as absolutely giddy to be let off of Axemann's leash and begin massacring helpless people. So far, I don't see how she could even be remotely likable beyond her physical attractiveness. Yeah, the execution scene is an anime original. All they'd have to do to keep it in line with Beato's character is not have drawn her with that smile. A frown or even a neutral expression would've left some wiggle room for them to work in some of her positive characteristics. Or they could've just adapter the end of her TSFiA short and have her coldly asking the defectors for their last words before shooting them.

Apart from Beatrix you got

>Katia being an imbecile instead of just naive because they cut out all the trust building Theo has to do with her before she spills her secrets
>Gretel gets her bitchiness and bad piloting scenes cut so she looks better
>Iris gets her bad jokes cut, and she's not anywhere near as likable
>Theo isn't anywhere near as paranoid as he should be because they cut the scene where he contemplated shooting Katia; in the anime, he's just a dick
>Annette's PTSD is ridiculously overblown
>Cut the scene where Theo abandons Annette and Inghild because he doesn't want to deal with PTSD-chan (which is why Iris was blaming him for Inghild)

And this is just in the first episode. Almost everybody is way less sympathetic and way more exaggerated than they were in the VN. Also, personal opinion, but I thought the VN was way better acted. Iris just sound like "Iris" and Beato was pure sex on the ears.

The difference was was that Fate's adaptions are decent compared to this. Characters remain in essence themselves because they knew what to trim and what not for the most part. For instances, not sticking in Theo deliberating whether or not to shoot Katia is a huge cut.

They don't have to do it here, because next episode he'll decide whether she should "accidentally" die to BETAs or not.
>>
>>13738068
They can still recover most of the characters. Katia might be a little difficult. Cutting out all the relationship shit with Theo makes her trusting him look really stupid. They've already dug themselves into a hole with Beatrix, so they can't really play her as anything other than an edgy psycho whore, unfortunately.
>>
>>13738075
They never had time to give Beatrix any kind of decent characterization anyways, she'll have like 5 minutes of screentime in the entire fucking show at this rate.

>>13738077
No, she should've appeared in episode 2, to threaten/taunt Iris if they were following the VN/LN. Alternatively, there's a couple of short stories revolving around her they could've used. The execution scene was something the anime shoehorned in to scream "LOOK AT THE EVIL BITCH." The VN is much more neutral. She's dangerous, but not an enemy/evil yet. She even saves the 666 and other trapped NVA units at one point.

I am pretty sure blocking a laser with a reactive armour shield was super retarded but I don't care enough to be autismo about why again.

Seems to me you should just get lit up by every laser class in the vicinity at once and the shield has no more defense against lasers than your armour.

>>13738086
You're just ranting like a shit, not replying to what was actually written. The characterization of everyone but the core 3-4 has to be exaggerated to fuck because it has to be crammed into a tiny fraction of the time and the plot does not work if you don't get across certain things. The main point of that scene is just to introduce the enemy group in general right away to set things up.

Scwarzesmarken is not a story about Beatrix. It is not going to sacrifice everything else just for the sake of including every scene ever written of her so you can think you win a meaningless internet argument.
>>
>>13738121
>The characterization of everyone but the core 3-4
But they mess them up too.

I just picked on Beato because all they would've had to do to keep in in characters is not make her smirk. I think she got it the worst. And yeah, it's not about her, and I really wouldn't want it to be either. At the end of the day, she's still the main villain.

I think Katia and Theo are also greatly diminished by the anime too.
>>
>>13738121
The shield still adds more material that the laser has to ablate through, technically.
>>
>While the results gained from the enormous financial expenditure and sacrifices made to capture and study BETA were mocked as "the BETA have been confirmed to be carbon-based life forms and nothing more", the discovery of an enzyme affecting the decline of metabolism was considered a significant contribution to humanity's cause.
The BETA contained the secret to eternal youth?

>However, completely alien forms of the BETA's organic structures and functions shocked the researchers; due to concerns for deviating from bio-ethical guidelines, Alternative II would eventually be shelved to make space for Alternative III.
hahahahahahaaa what
>>
>>13738131
>I think Katia and Theo are also greatly diminished by the anime too.
Sure, but they are still going to have a lot more time to at least do a half job of it.

And yes the fact everyone will be a 1 dimensional cardboard standup of themselves because the anime is too fucking short is shit but don't act like it's a capitalist plot to discredit your waifu.

It's not like the characterization is -totally- not there, Katia brings up her goal when she does because Theo just went on a huge anti-stasi rant that makes him seem vaguely trustworthyish and Beatrix does have her parting line. Consider what it would tend to imply if you had Beatrix making a really serious expression there, it's not like she exactly has a problem with killing people.
>>
>>13738145
I like how people still fall for random shit someone made up and yet it's crazy to suggest maybe people shouldn't believe what they heard from their friend's cousin's uncle about how Mitsuo Fukuda is the anti-Christ and rapes babies.
>>
>>13738155
I am probably confusing the real version of this and the pasta version of this.
>>
>>13738146
That parting line came off more as a joke, especially when you know what Axmann is like. And the smirk implies she's enjoying it, that she's using the BETA as an excuse to work off sadistic impulses, that she's completely evil and always was. Giving her a I don't give a shit expression would've been better. I don't mind making her completely unsympathetic because they had to cut out side material because she is a villain, but I don't think they need to put in extra scenes to make her even more evil when she already is plenty evil.

Katia still looks like a complete dunce though, any way you look at it. I guess you can rationalize it was Theo saving her, but oh, wait, in the anime it was Iris who saved her while Theo was just the first one to her TSF, so even that's busted.

Getting off on murdering others, especially when they can't fight back is usually the mark of only the most evil villains in anime.

Katia has a lot more going for her than just her Kawaii uguu factor. If they keep playing up her moe retard factor than later character developments (like her speech) won't make any sense at all.

Beatrix was always easily the most evil person in SM (yes, I'm including Axemann btw). Consider that she's killed so many more people that Axemann ever did. You see, whereas Axmann's sadism is secondary to his thirst for power, Beatrix is ruled purely by impulse. She doesn't have a goal or plan really. If she wasn't in the stasi, she'd still likely be torturing and killing people. The BETA provide a convenient means to act mask these desires in patriotic bullshit. She doesn't really too much about anyone or anything, it's always about bringing as much pain to as many people as possible.

As for Iris, she had the umbrage to be better than out little psychopath back when they were attending the Air Academy. A rational person would be happy with 2nd place or learn how to move on after so many years, but not Beatrix. No, instead, she set out to kill and torture her rival and everyone connected to her. Thankfully, the government that allows her to project her sadistic hatred to the masses makes it difficult for her to get back at Iris without proof.

In all, it makes for a great and absolutely terrifying villain. In an era where "sympathetic" villains are vogue, it's refreshing to a character who you want to see fought without remorse and killed painfully.

Beatrix and Jurgen were still lovey-dovey after two years. It was so bad that Jurgen went to go see her first when he got back to Berlin after a year fighting BETA, much to Irisdina's chagrine. Iris, meanwhile, has been kinda jelly about everything (just read the translated portions of BiS, she wanted to keep Jurgen away from Beatrix).

Maybe Beato and Jurg did have a falling out, but it's hard to believe that when a portion of his recorded final words were directed towards her.

I hardly watch newly aired mecha anime at this point in my life, so that distinction doesn't really matter to me. Show was shit, regardless of the other mecha shows released around that time.
People say the LN/manga is better, but I really have my doubts. Even without the off model animation and pacing issues, I really don't think I get the point of Total Eclipse's characters, or the overall message of the spinoff.
>>
>>13739189
They fucked up way more than Beatrix with only the first episode.

Who knows what else they will fuck.

Besides, I'm spitting on it only because I wanted it to be a good adaptation. It's clearly not, but maybe it will be a decent anime for some people. Good for them.
>>
>>13739189
Well, we also complained about Theo, Katia, Gretel, and everything else. The deal with Beato was, rather than a cut, it was something that was added. You can kinda rationalize one, but you can't rationalize the other.

>>13739196
Tell me about it.

They also made Katia a complete dunce (she tells Theo she's a Strawitz right after she meets him and he's giving her the tour), the made Iris boring and dull, and they removed Theo's paranoia (he doesn't even contemplate shooting Katia), oh, and Iris was the one to rescue Katia, Theo was just the first to her MiG. Oh, and Gretel is best girl cause they removed her bitchiness and her bad piloting scenes. Also, Inghi's injuries don't look anywhere near bad enough (Inghi even reacted an looked to Iris as Iris pulled the trigger), so Iris shooting her comes off way worse than it does in the LN/VN.

The Japs are extremely pissed. The only ones who like this are the anime original faggots.

On it's own though, it's a pretty alright anime, as an adaptation, it's a real turd/

The anime is a bit poor at getting across the idea that Yuuya's point is that he basically takes Takeru's character arc from a world native perspective. Takeru is alien to Japanese culture because he's from the Americanized, identity detached modern Japan, Yuuya is alien to Japanese culture because he's American and had no Japanese parenting influence. Takeru is alien to war because he's from a peaceful world, Yuuya is alien to war because he's a test pilot. They have different motivation and personalities but it's kind of like Amuro and Kamille.

I don't think any version of TE has been well executed though, the LNs got rewritten like a motherfucker between serialization and volume releases and the VN is a rushed pile of garbage.

I don't care what you watch or how you treat and receive anime in general, everything is fucking subjective. I was just explaining my stand point, and with my ability to at least decently read moonrunes to have a working knowledge of what's going on I find the differences between the novels and anime pretty staggering.

And the TE Rohgun/TE Rising Manga is pretty damn good.

>>13739259
The whole thematic of TE is about how Yuuya resents his Japanese side because of abandonment issues over his father and racism affecting him growing up in the Deep South. I don't see much parity in comparing Yuuya's story and Takeru's in terms of the hardships they go through or their situations in general in terms of development.
>>
>>13739259
>Good and 1:1 are not the same thing.

And I said it wasn't a good adaptation.

They didn't have to do a 1:1 thing, but they made choices which definitely prevent it from being anything " Good " ( Again, as an adaptation, not as an anime )
>>
>>13739259
I don't have any issues with the LNs but age is constantly known and even infamous for missing deadlines, failing at reaching target dates with their projects, Miyata was fired for tracing and plaguerization and got age and ixtl into a bunch of lawsuits that cost them a lot of money and the VN was rushed and under budget as a result as Kouki was deseparate for other artists since they lost the guy who had succeeded Iizuki as the lead artist.

You need to look at it in terms of the overall point of Muv-Luv being to promote moderate Japanese nationalism to disenfranchised youth. Both characters are disenfranchised from their Japanese backgrounds but for different reasons. Takeru's is more directly relatable to actual young Japanese people, Yuuya's is more "believable" due to the lack of crazy sci-fi nonsense to justify it. No one ever really tells him his butthurt over his childhood is wrong besides Cryska's parent envy, just that Japanesu is cool anyways.

Also note Leon embraces his nipnong heritage from the start and gets to fly the strongest TSF while he fucks the hottest chick with relatively little drama.

Vol.6 took over 3 years to come out after the last serialized chapter. It was released 4 months after the anime adaption of the same content even.
>>
>>13739375
That's because the entire LN series was put on hiatus until the anime came out in the first place
>>
>>13739332
Well yeah the original version is entirely different but with this one the way Inghild smiles about it brings it to mind. I don't mind this as a change really because it's still relevant material and arguably a good way to illustrate the difference between this and the previous anime series.
>>
>>13739387
The story was up to the same point still, technically the anime stops slightly short of where chapter 29 did to avoid the fucking sniper cliffhanger.
>>
>>13739401
The VN added in content from the anime and some anime original plot line stuff as well a few things from the Ishagaki and Rohgun manga's. The LNs are technically still kind of separate from that stuff going by what Kouki was saying after the anime ended.

If no actual past content already published was revised or changed to reflect this in future releases then it technically in my eyes at least doesn't qualify as a "rewrite" or revision. Hell, didn't Kouki write a side story one-shot novel about Kyoko that was bundled with volume 1 BD pre-order collection editions of the anime?
>>
>>13739417
>If no actual past content already published was revised or changed to reflect this in future releases then it technically in my eyes at least doesn't qualify as a "rewrite" or revision
The point is the paperback version of the LNs are different than the magazine serialization. Eg. the Raptor flashback (which is a major character event for Yuuya, Leon, and Sharon) wasn't in Tech Gian but was in vol.6.
>>
>>13739114
Was Katia meant to be that stacked? I thought she was the pseudo-loli character.
>>
>>13739514
That's in the norm for LN stuff though.
>>
>>13739553
I don't think that's the case. Vol 6 only came out after the anime aired, around the period when they started adapting anime content into being in line with the upcoming VN (Yui and Kyouko's stories)
and Vol 6 concluded the original Tech Gian run of the series (they probably never intended to write direct-to-LN to continue before the anime and VN came out.

TE's chronology of development is a right mess, really. Half of it is obvious (eg. firing Sou) but the other half, I wonder what though processes they had when planning the marketing of that series out.
>>
>>13739587
TE had the bad timing of going through production on all fronts (anime, LNs, manga, and VN) when age was on the cusp of financial break down. But its still overall a fun story.

How many of you think Beatrix was forced into the stasi?

Like it wasn't even Iris selling out Jurg that got her kicked into the stasi, but something else. She's still the cute, lovestruck girl she was at age 13 as she was at age 15-16, but by the time she was 18, she was a crazy stasi lady as seen in Requiem's Gretel centered side story. We also know that she was a big part of the purges that killed Katia's dad and Jurgen in 1978. What would explain this complete reversal from a perfect waifu into one the most evil people in the whole franchise in just two to three short years? Bad writing? Possibly, it is Hiroki, but what are the chances that some shit goes down for her family, they get purged (which would explain why Beato is the only representative seen in SM of such a politically powerful family), she ends up in the stasi, get's a healthy heaping of Axemann's special sauce like Lise, and comes out the complete psycho we all love to hate?

In the end, she's forced to kill Jurgen after Iris rats him out to save herself (for maximum suffering). Because of this, both Iris and Beato end up blaming each other for Jurg's death and vendettaing each other.

As much as I defend Beatrix being not as vile as many pretend, I honestly think she signed on her own.

Even at 18, I think she already had her mind set on the " East Germany need to be ruled with an iron fist if they want to survive the BETA " thing, thus enlisting on the side she thought would be the main European power against the BETA and achieving Humanity survival. Eventually, as the Stasi changed for the worst with Schmidt, she never changed her opinions but instead wanted to be the one in charge and achieve herself what she was fighting for ( ie Humanity survival through iron discipline ).

If anything should have get her in the Stasi ranks, it would probably be her family loyalty to the soviets, and by extension, their DDR watchdog. Even if they were not really their biggest supporters, they are part of the Nomenklatura, and they owe the Soviets the wealth of their family.

However, she most probably enlisted before the purge, so even if her family have been purged they were doing well at the time she signed ( And I don't think they were part of the purge at all ), and it's heavily implied she never went into Axmann " training ". IIRC it's even explicitely said that she became a powerful element of the Stasi because of both her personal achievements and her family honor, thus granting her some kind of privilege treatment, like being able to talk back to her superiors even when she was not a high ranked officer.
>>
>>13738345
>No, but it did make them easier to capture.
So an "enzyme affecting the decline of metabolism" is what they use to keep the BETA in suspended animation?
Wouldn't that be "an enzyme causing the decline of metabolism" or "an enzyme effecting the decline of metabolism" instead?
>>
>>13739950

It is, but it's minor. It's an enzyme that controls BETA metabolism. If they can + it they can - it. Still, you're more right on that account.

That aside, though the original direct meaning of 代謝低下酵素の発見など人類への貢献は決して低いものではない is "the contribution to humanity for the discovery of a metabolism decline enzyme was by no means small", 代謝 can also mean regeneration, but since only Destroyers are specifically stated to regenerate, I opted to take "metabolism" instead. The original statement made no mention of where they got the enzyme from; one would assume it's the BETA given that the entire paragraph talks about Alt. II's failure to provide study results of their corpses, but IW is full of things like that. It would be nice if they put that in concrete words for once.

Though, as much as I'm used to having the piss taken out of posts on 4chan, immortality is a bit too much. Isn't suspended animation the more appropriate assumption?
>>
hypothetically speaking, what would happen in a post BETA world? talking about if the BETA is no longer an issue after Alternative, let's say they just up and left, I'm curious about the politics that comes after.

Amurica will probably try to get strategic lands everywhere on the world to ensure a global domination in the new world. They have by far the most important army as of 2001, so basically if they ask any country to give them lands, they would have no choice but to accept.

I don't think they would try to get Japanese lands, as Japan is the second army and they will technically always have a defense pact running.

The Soviets will probably just accept because they will have enough hard time to rebuild on their Motherland, like any other country. Or they can refuse and let the guns speak, but even if they have the technology, they are in a way worse shape than the US, so they will probably lose. It would just be a suicide act, so they might as well give them what they want without a fight.

Though considering that all of the previously BETA occupied lands are dead lands where basically life can't grow again for at least decades, I wonder if they would want more territory. I mean, of course they would, that's the US, but they will probably not go on a rampage and claim every land on Earth their own and create a unique US Worldwide nation.

The Chinese/Taiwanese/SEAeans/Indians are here-or-theres that might swing the other way depending on how the USA proceeds.

While they do depend on US aid, they've also been taking steps to isolate their logistics away from the superpowers; in TE the Indians/SEAeans are collaborating on developing a local-modified F-18 variant. Both have also been getting aid from Japan before the 1998 invasion set the Empire back. After Bhopal, a lot of the southward Asian nations became very cautious of the UN and, to a lesser extent, the US, after seeing Indian forces forced into participation as part of the diversionary units for Soviet forces to penetrate the Hive.

The Chinese/Taiwanese were at first initially distrustful of each other, and only agreed to strengthen their collaborative efforts after hearing about the success of the US' G-bomb development. This is probably one of the reasons why Yifei gets to represent the UFC on a mainly Chinese TSF. Taiwan remains a US ally, however, and while the Chinese won't take kindly to US political interference, I don't think they're mad enough to try something unless the US forces move first, like, say, a treaty that places Taiwan firmly on the Western side and representing the Chinese, in order to try and "legally" obtain G-elements from mainland China by abusing the UN's distribution system.

I don't think open battle is a possibility but these factions would probably move to block the US from attempting long-term military occupation as allies on their territories. Double for the Indians/SEAeans who only have one Hive each within their territories.

The Israelis will probably remain US allies on the surface but traders to all and friends to none, just like in the real world. They have a penchant for US gear, but the Lavi was jointly developed between them and the Chinese and I can't imagine they're any happy about the US supplying the Arab nations and Iran with F-14/F-15 TSFs.
>>

As a Taiwanese, I'm left wondering: since Imperial Japan survives the Second World War (apparently), what does that mean Taiwan as one of its earliest colonies (annexed in 1895)? Is it returned to the Republic of China to become its sanctuary after the Chinese Civil War? Is this actually elaborated upon?

Might be redundant anyway. After all, East Germany still exists despite a slightly different outcome to World War II. Taiwan presumably becomes the right-wing capitalist dictatorship shit-hole it was historically when fortune turns against Nanking Government around '47, but is spared the Cultural Revolution at least (is that a thing in Muvluv?). I assume the White Terror still happened in the same time frame.

Whatever the case, I'm assuming circumstances lead it to be in the US rather than PRC camp by 40 years out, if not well earlier.
>>
Just ordered myself all of the Schwarzesmarken modelkits. This is going to be a good winter.
>>
>>13740221
Majority of Japanese Imperial gains were returned to their regional owners, actually, and the PRC/Taiwan split still happens as per normal. The White Terror lasted for quite long so it should have began, at least. Whether it stopped in its historical date (unlikely, since it would have been well into the BETA War) or earlier (although whether from the announcement of aliens on Mars in the 1960s or only when Earth was invaded in the 1970s, I can't say) is up for guesses.

The current UFC is also known amongst the region's citizens as the Third United Front, after the first and second Front movements prior to WWI and during WWII. They presumably side with the US because of anti-PRC sentiments prior to the BETA War and are regarded as a supporter of the USA in the East and South Asian regions; however, some time in the late 1980s/early 1990s the PRC government and them sign a land-share agreement, and the PRC end up headquartering themselves and their military on Taiwan. Initially both sides conducted separate anti-BETA culling raids and had strict orders not to intermingle (officially announced as prevention of confusion due to their difference in doctrine and equipment, but hinted to be the PRC afraid of the as-of-now stronger Taiwanese government and military from absorbing the weakened PRC), but when the US announced the completion of testing of their first G-bombs, both nations deigned to sign a cooperation deal that would see a lot more data-sharing and integrated operations.

So she would've been the type to willingly sign up to kill Jurgen and Iris herself (someone she's been dating / been bff with for two years by the time volume II of BiS wraps up), turning into the cunt who decided to taunt/sexually harass Gretel and purge high/middle schoolers with a smile, or the type who seems more likely to torture cute animals than cook as a pastime in just two years without outside intervention? Beatrix by the time she was 18 was a radically different person than at 15/16. Adult Beatrix is the second most evil, sadistic, and petty person in all of Muv Luv's canon (Axemann just barely hedges her out). If she really did choose the Stasi life on her own, and what we see of her is all from the heart, than she pretty much forfeits all sympathy points the audience has. She'd be the cause of all of Iris's suffering, the reason for Jurg's death, and one of the major reason why things are so shitty in SM. Really, it'd actually make her worse than Axemann in many respects. People don't look kindly upon those who gleefully turn against their loved ones.

Of course, not discounting that you could be right either. She could have been evil all along, but it is so much less satisfying.

I'm not saying she was evil all along.

She enlisted before the purge, so when it happened ( And it happened as a Surprise Motherfucker thing, in a matter of few days the order was passed and executed ), she was already a Stasi soldier, and a loyal one.

She have nothing to do with Jurgen death as far as we know. For now, all we are hinted is that Iris sold out Jurgen for not being loyal to the party ( And did so for unknown reasons yet ), thus including him into the purge he wasn't a part of initially. We don't know who killed him, nor we know how he died.

My guess ( But that's only mine as far as BiS goes ) is that when the purge order was passed, Beatrix was faithful that all the targets were either traitors or highly dissidents ( Which is how the real soviet purge was done. Even if it also targeted loyal people the government wanted dead, the reason put forward was that they were traitors or they tried to attempt rebellion and that kind of thing ). So getting them into execution was not a big deal for her. But then, Iris sell out Jurgen, and here her power is totally useless : If she, or her family, opposes his execution, they will be seen as traitors too and executed. Especially when the Stasi have " proofs " emanating from the sister of the suspect, who could think it's not true and that his sister would want him dead ? After those events, it's easy to see why she wants Iris dead at all costs ( The culprit here is not the Soviets who ordered the purge, it's only by Iris fault that Jurgen got killed ). I can also see that maybe, knowing that she was dating Jurgen, the Stasi command wanted her to execute him to prove that she is loyal to the actual power. Which, if it happened like that, would skyrocket Beatrix anger against Iris to 10000%.

But all this is pure speculation, we won't know before the end of BiS anyway ( Or even another spin-off if âge want to play the bastards )

Here's the second part of Jurg's recording (after Iris interrupts him):

The final two lines make reference to a beautiful moon, one that almost makes you almost forget about all the death from the BETA. As we know, the Stratwitz purge was called the Moonlit Night and made the recording on that very night Beatrix and the rest of the stasi massacred everyone.

On the Night of Moonlight:

Another thing I want to add is that stasi indoctrination would explain why she barely refers to Jurgen in SM, and when she does, it's always as "Irisdina's traitorous brother" or "the traitor" rather than by name (mind you, this is what she's thinking to herself, not saying to others).
>>
>>13740592
If she willingly enlisted, Jurgen and Iris wouldn't of wanted anything to do with her. I wonder if she would've been willing to make that trade along with her soul for some amorphous promise of power in the stasi.
>>
>>13741166
And your point is ?

I already know all of that. It doesn't interfere with what I was saying. Jurgen certainly died at the hands of the Stasi, but we don't know who killed him and how.

And I'm not buying the theory some people have with the fact that she only thinks about it as a traitor because of indoctrination. It could be literally anything making her to think that, yet alone a stylized writing. Especially when I'm pretty sure it's not even just implied but written that she passed through anything similar to an indoctrination treatment when signing and after, mainly because of her family name.

>>13741215
I understand Iris, but why Jurgen would cut bonds ? He was certainly not pleased about the Stasi, but remember it was before the purge and before Schmidt got to change their methods for barbarian ones. They were not that bad before that.

Associating himself with them is one thing, dating one of their members is another.

He is not pleased to see them parade and control the city, mainly because that's not how he see a free state should be. He is as idealistic as his sister, so of course he won't support an organization whose main goal is to watch over the citizens.

But who knows if they were even always together when Beatrix enlisted. Maybe they had different views and goals and just broke up, while probably being always in love at the time.

>Also, it seems like you're increasingly convincing me that Beatrix is the worst girl and worst than Axemann than any of the Irisposter did (the anime isn't helping things either).

Well, I'm sorry for that, but I think the exact contrary. To me if she was forced to enter the Stasi that would kind of break her character. She have convictions and believe in them, making her a strong and interesting one. Forcing her to do anything would just be fanservice at that level.

That's like if Iris isn't the one to sell out her brother. If I dislike the Irisfags, I like Iris character, but having her finally not selling out her brother would be a waste, really. To me, SM is really a story about strong and complex people, and how far they can go to stay true to their beliefs.

>What's next, she was just acting like she was in love for three years just to get close to the Bernhards to stab them in the back.

This too would kind of break the character and make her fall into the Full Evil basic villain case, but it's always possible. Maybe I just totally misread the entire LN and made Beatrix way better than she actually was without even noticing it ( Hint : I don't think I did, so it's a really little possibility here. But hey, as long as the series is not finished, they can literally crush any character with one line, so why not after all ).

Read Gretel's Requiem story, she's pretty much a sadistic sociopath and a completely different person than her BiS portrayal, and again, she was just 17-18 in that story. People usually don't change that drastically unless some shit has gone down.

because they rebuilt it and weren't on the front lines of the cold war. the whole reason the berlin wall existed was because the city was split between american and soviet forces at the end of the war. if berlin had been nuked it wouldn't have been occupied by anyone so there would be no reason to partition it.
>>

>>
>>13741410
There's a lot more wrong about Sagiri than that. The guy is a hugely selfish hypocrite and his personal interactions with Ayamine are abhorrent. There's nothing redeeming about him as a person, the only positive thing to come from his existence was his plan failing so spectacularly something actually good came from it.

She'd pretty much had loss once the revolution kicked off. There was no putting that genie back in the lamp and even then, the outcome would've been the same because the DDR's strength had been sapped by the civil war.

A victory condition for Beato would've been nipping the rebellion in the bud and taking control of the stasi and East Germany.

>>
>>13741843
No, I'm just saying that the majority of the cast is composed of broken, depressed people with weak convictions. I'd even include Beato and Iris on that list (ignoring the weak convictions part).
>>
>>13741876
I wouldn't really describe Beatrix or Iris as having "strong convictions." Both of them are will probably turn out to be huge traitors by the end of BiS. Beatrix herself sold out her soul for the stasi and Iris turned in her brother and made deals with Axemann.
>>
>>13741876
They have all pretty much strong convictions on their own right ( Like Lise doing horrible things just for Theo, Theo pretty much doing horrible things for Iris, Sylwia got reinforced from her past and doesn't want anyone to endure what she had to, Annette... Well I need to think more about her... )

Being broken don't necessarily means you don't have a strong conviction into something.

You know, as much flack as TE got, I think it has a stronger cast (TE's main problem was always pacing and plotting, not characters after all).

After watching the first episode, I haven't been able to connect to a single character in SM. Irisdina is a bland heroine, Katia is just been a dumb moe blob, PTSD-bitch was just laughably ridiculous, and Theo's an asshole.

The villains are ridiculously over the top evil. I know people can be fucked up, but I always liked how human the villains of previous MLs felt. Even guys like Sagiri seemed like they could be real people, and you could see where they were coming from. Beatrix and Axemann, in contrast, look like a very edgy, badly written take on evil, something that belongs more in a trashy shoenen than ML.

The pacing is crap too. If TE was too slow, than SM is way too fast. Certain that should have a lot of weight to them (like blondies death) illicit no response at all.

As a final shot at this thing, despite the absence of QUALITY, SM still manages to look bad just because it has such an ugly art style.

I don't know if I really want to watch the rest of this series now. I'll give it two more episodes before I decide if I want to drop.
>>
>>13743406
I also like to make sweeping generalizations about characters after 30 seconds of screen time.

Inghild's death isn't really a big deal, it's pretty much just a tone setter.
>>
>>13743425

You can get a lot out of a character based off of very little. Some of the most defining features of a character can be effectively shown in just a couple of minutes or less with effective directing and acting.

In this case, I know that Beatrix and Axemann enjoy killing people. That's huge. That automatically puts them in another category than previous ML villains.

I can assume that the people being execute were interrogated, and then once the stasi had no use for them, they were disposed of in a style very reminiscent of real world massacres.

I know Beatrix in particular was very eager to start killing. I know that she likes the feeling of blood splashed on her face from the way the scene is directed. I know that both characters make light of it afterwards.

I'm linking TVTropes, I hate the site but it does a better job of describing what I'm talking about.

Nah you're a faggot. I was getting a real Ouromov/Xenia vibe from Axmann and Beatrix. While Axmann might be doing shit for a greater purpose (he might actually believe what he's spouting about having to come together to fight the BETA), Beatrix is doing it because this is what she enjoys, what she lives for. You don't need more characterization beyond that. They're fun villains to hate; a sob story or a sympathetic motivation would ruin them.

I'm laughing so hard at you.

Beatrix is literally the type who bullied others on the playground and tortured small animals to death when she was younger before graduating to people. Axmann is almost as evil in his own way. There really isn't much to them. No traumatic past; they were always unlikable cunts, and the stasi and situation with the BETA is giving them an outlet for it.

I guess I really won't like this anime then. They have an excellent reason to set up a nuanced conflict between actual people with actual stances and philosophy (aliens are bad, but no one can figure out what's the best course of action; authoritarianism vs freedoms in a crises situation), but instead decide to go for the retarded "for the evulz" motivation.

I thought Muv Luv was supposed to be good. I'm going back to my Gundam then. As evil as Zeon was, they did a pretty good job showing why average people would follow such an ideology.

Its weird but one of my main enjoyments for Rohgun's manga vs Ishigaki is I just felt his style and attention to detail was a lot more suited as well as just plain better then Ishigaki's.

I hate Ishigaki's style.
>>
>>13743807
Ishigaki is generally a pretty shitty artist. How exactly his Nanoha doujins are so great I don't even understand. Even then Jesus Christ I hate his shocked pupils though.
>>
>>13743820
I don't consider him a shitty artist, but I just think his style does not remotely fit for TE. Especially with Miyata and Iizuki's style with the VN and LN art work at all.

It just looks wrong.
>>
>>13743973
He's kind of in the same genre of anime art when it comes to proportions, facial ratios, etc. it's just that his stuff is really flat and simplistic due to his technical shortcomings.
>>
>>13743537
>While Axmann might be doing shit for a greater purpose (he might actually believe what he's spouting about having to come together to fight the BETA), Beatrix is doing it because this is what she enjoys, what she lives for.

Seriously ? That's the total opposite actually. Axmann gives 0 fuck about anybody else than himself. He only wants to stop the BETA so he can survive and continue to do what he want with humans, who obviously are more funny to toy with. And that's Beatrix who have a greater purpose, weither or not you agree with her.
>>
>>13743676
The LN is exactly what you describe. From the first episode of the anime, I would already have prefered a LN official translation.

>>13743472
>I know Beatrix in particular was very eager to start killing. I know that she likes the feeling of blood splashed on her face from the way the scene is directed. I know that both characters make light of it afterwards.

And you are totally right about that, because that's what the anime is telling us. That's why it's bad, because the LN basically told a different story with just details like that the anime modified for no reason ( Except maybe to please the brainless fags who actually enjoyed TE and don't want a complex plot ).

I would again recommand reading the LN, but unfortunately as long as it is not translated, most people will lure themselves thinking the anime is the actual SM experience. What a waste, âge.

>>>13743537

I mean, Ouromov's "greater purpose" was to become richer than god by robbing the British Bank via hacking and covering up the crime with the unusued Goldeneye space warfare system. Presumably, like a lot of the officer corps and a segment of society in the 1990s, he was pissed off with the dissolution of the USSR and then Yeltsin's junta in 1993, and thought it entitled him to get rich as hell.
>>
>>13741707

Eh, the Soviets rebuilt their half of Berlin too (albeit at a slower pace because they were also rebuilding their own country, whereas America wasn't, and it was left up to the a fairly-impoverished DDR to do it).
>>
>>13743676
I thought Axmann's speech did a good job of summing up the main objective of the Stasi as an organization (rather than his own personal motivations), that is, the DDR must be united and suppress dissent in order to stand up to the BETA.

Judging by this first episode, I think I'll pass on this, because I can't get over the fact that everybody in Germany is a goddamn retard who seem to be killing more of their own people than the BETA.

On a minor note the show's attempts to be gritty are significantly damaged by the fact that it needs to be bound to its cast of cute teenagers. I know that's every show, but still.

The only ones of "their own people" they killed were traitorous counterrevolutionary dissidents who would have caused the front line to collapse by causing political turmoil in the East in service of the imperialists. It is imperative that such destabilizing elements be removed.

Also that's just East Germany, they were known for that kind of thing. West Germans are much more chill and fabulous, they have funny mustaches and live in castles in Dover and go swimming.

I don't really know who they were gearing this anime towards. Noobs won't get it because the pace is too quick and it just plops you into the world. LN and VN fags won't like it because the changed minor details and cuts lead to radically different or exaggerated characters.
