walking trash can style mecha
My friend from college introduced me to world war robot (and mecha in general, as well as 4chan), and those toys are way too expensive for my ass, but I love the style... any anime, or model kits, or toys that have this aesthetic?

They're mostly comedy reliefs or sidekicks like in recent Space Dandy and that 2D Toei movie by Urobutchy. If you're talking about "rat style", it's the opposite of Japanese mentality.

The 1/12 WWR toys aren't that expensive, though.

The absolute cheapest is like $80

Hopefully they'll get around to building that prototype with the full cockpit. Also more light up gimmicks.

I just scoured the internet in hopes of finding even a resin model of it to no avail. I think your best hopes would be to either commission someone to scratch build the parts or crack down and do it yourself, unfortunately.

I would love to scrapbuild something like this

Gear Krieg. Well kinda. There aren't any sentient 3m tall automatons.
