I've just got to the episode when Bouken Silver joined the group. Not really sold on the suit desu. The colors clash so bad and he looks too different from the rest of the team.

I prefer the early sixths who look like the rest of the team but with extra gears. Like, Burai's suit was just the standard Zyuranger suit with the Dragon Shield he stole.

I really like Shinkenger's approach to the Big Bad. It still follows the basic "free the boss" plot, but also allows us to get to know Dokoku. That episode when he was mad enough to attempt to cross over into the real world to wreck the Shinkenger's shit is based as fuck. It was a genuine shit-your-pants moment. And he actually had to sacrifice someone he cared about to finally be free. Someone the viewers cared about as well because she actually had a tragic backstory and shit.

In contrast, Gengetsu is guarantied to be used by Fox-faced to level up anyway, since there has never been any attempt to build his character, and the plot line has always been him using Kibaoni clan's power to level up his own. His release was a meh.

So far, I find that Gengetsu is similar to N Ma, the big bad from Magiranger. Both were sealed up throughout most of the show and the only thing we know about them is that they are powerful evils.

When N Ma was finally unsealed, he was indeed powerful and so overwhelmingly powerful that it seemed like the protagonists had a huge power gap to catch up. That added a lot to the drama and made a well-executed finale.

Hopefully Nininger is able to step-up to that, but it's been boring so far.

Yes! The villains of Shinkenger are a fun bunch to watch.

I like that they weren't really an organization. They were just a hierarchy of the damned, naturally formed in the chaos of the Japanese purgatory. As such they clinged to each other to form a dysfunctional family instead of an invasion force. There were no plan except to wreck shit because they were damned so what was the point?

Dokoku's nihilism, Dayuu's tragedy, Akumo's appreciation of beauty...all feel very "Japanese" to me.

Also this scene right here...Fuck. Soooooooo beautifully done. Unmistakable Asian ghost story.

The subbing scene for toku basically changed entirely when Over-Time hit the scene. Once they started covering Sentai and Rider we got MFC, who've been doing a whole bunch of older Sentai, MCS showed up out of nowhere and did Kuuga, GomenRider did the same for Agito, basically there started being some actual alternatives to TV-N who were up to the standards anime subs had been enjoying for a few years by that point.

The issue with that was the fact Ninnin had to be serious fun instead of wacky fun. If Ninnin's head writer took charge of ToQ instead and vice versa, both would probably end up better than they are now

Let's talk ratings for a sec. Did Kyoryuger get higher ratings than Gobuster? I know they had much better toy sales, but I thought the ratings were still sliding year to year.

Because honestly it seems more likely that low toy sales weren't because the show was too dark and kids didn't like it, it was just cause the toys were less fun and less collectible.

first post on /m/ so please be gentle.

so, after growing up with the power rangers, i lost interest around the time S.P.D. wrapped up and stopped watching any of the shows. then a friend turned me on to kamen rider and the sentai stuff last year and i was hooked.

until today i thought i had seen some pretty decent sentai what with watching zyuranger, kakuranger, gokaiger, and even akibaranger. now those are good and all, but since i've been watching ninninger this year, i've seen prettymuch nothing but gripes about it compared to a lot of other sentai series, but i didn't understand why exactly.
i just finished a 3 day watch of kyoryuger and i gotta say, after an ending like that, i think i finally get it. ninninger IS pretty shit now that i think about it in comparison to stuff like gokaiger and kyoryuger. holy hell, that's probably the most i've given a shit about a team in the last few episodes, and for sure the most shit i've given about any of the villains i've seen so far.

so tell me /m/, is there more? will i find a series i like as much as kyoryu? or even something that comes close?

Unfortunately, Sentai is seen as the more "kiddy" toku compared to the other side of the coin, Kamen Rider. As such it's often far less serious and far more afraid to take even the slightest risk or go anywhere new or interesting.

There are quite a few standout seasons, mostly before the collectible gimmick craze went full money printing mode. Boukenger is a personal favorite not just for being well written and having a good sense of adventure, but for having strong characters and a really cool, likable red. If You found S.P.D. interesting at all, definitely check out Dekaranger. It may not be the most serious of seasons, but it is definitely one of most standout ones. Action, characters, story, all very memorable.

Also, Go-Busters. It's the un-sentai, and damn is it good.

There's some kind of loophole in Japanese censorship, they don't consider English swear words to be real swear words or something like that. That's how Panty and Stocking got away with saying shit and fuck every other word.

Panty and Stocking was a late night TV show. They could get away with swears because of that.
Whether or not they censor English swears during normal tv hours or even golden hour is up to the companies running the channels. Some companies are very aware of English swears. So they will censor when needed. Other have no idea or just don't care because using English is still considered trendy.
The Japanese as a whole do not "dislike" Americans. This is a myth. While yes foreigners do misbehave it's not just one country guilty. You have Chinese, Brits, et cetera who are just as disruptive.
