Macross is interesting in that it has a lot of diegetic music. Particularly in later series the 'big moments' in Macross have been highlighted not with traditional BGM, but vocal tracks which are being sung in the story. Insert songs are ten a penny in Gundam, and on that front I think it compares kind of poorly.

But when it comes to BGM, the Gundam franchise has an absolute pile of good or even great OSTs. Even AGE has a pretty good OST. Plus and Frontier had Kanno produced OSTs and that really elevated their BGM.

Maybe its just me, but I personally don't really catch the BGM in Gundam that much, especially if there is a battle/argument going on.

Frontier's last episode is godly because of the music lining up perfectly with what's going on in the battle though. Whoever that did the last episode was good.
