I'm not sure if continuity wise it should be yet another sequel to the 1954 original, but it would be nice if it's today's equivalent to the 1954 one and the 1984 one making togueter a trilogy of sorts.
Wathever the plot is, I imagine the movie being self contained and stand alone, I can't imagine a Godzilla so unique looking getting the Heisei treatement.
Then again Neon Genesis Evangelion was supposed to be unmarketable and we all know how it ended up.

with the Raids Again overtones I'm expecting a direct sequel to 54 where he awakens and is in endless pain and smashes everything

with Anno I'm expecting a twist that it's actually Jirass or something

So Jet gotted his oxygen destroyer and blew up the water.
"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the godzillas "I will shoot at him" said the godzuki and he fired the heat breaths. Jet oxygen destroyered at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the godzillas" he shouted The radio said "No, Jet. You are the godzillas"
And then Jet was a biollante.

At the end he uses a spiral atomic breath and the city around him goes boom. The spikes overheat and take a new shape for the next film.

I wonder if it will even be released outside of Japan. Seeing how the movie is also being called "Japan vs. Godzilla", wanting to pay tribute to the character's significance, and Legendary probably not wanting audiences to feel confused, I wouldn't be surprised if they are happy with leaving the movie in Japan.
I would be sad, but it would mean the movie has less chances of failing, and maybe more movies could be done like this, and one way or another fans will eventually watch them.

Remember reading reports that they want to distribute it elsewhere, but that was a while ago. I'm not counting on it getting a global release even on home video. As usual with these films, I'm thinking it's only gonna get any meaningful theatrical presence in its home nation, and maybe pop up here and there in a handful of other countries for limited screenings or possibly a DVD/Blu-ray release.

Not much of a market for films like this, sadly, so it'd be pointless and harmful to try to push for a genuine international release.

I kinda hope this movie isn't just a "'54 only" reboot; it'd be nice to have this godzilla exist in a universe where events similar to the past films of all eras took place.I never like when Godzilla's 54 attack is treated as the only instance of a kaiju for decades, then inevitably you get a stream of them after. I'd like this Godzilla to be worn from decades of battle, struggling through attacks from both monsters and humans. He's fought King Ghidorah in the 60's, Hedorah in the 70's, Biollante in the 80's, etc. Maybe he's one of the last surviving kaiju left at this point. It'd also be interesting to see how the world has been affected by all these monster attacks over the decades.

Look, I like Evangelion too, but 3.0's was really kind of a mess. There's a difference between "ambiguous and open-ended" and "shit just happening with no sense of stakes", and 3.0 was the latter. Anno pretty clearly needs to step away from Eva, and I can totally see him coming up with an at-least-enjoyable Godzilla movie.

Christ, why did the R1 transfer look so bad? Say what you want about the stereotypical J-horror blue filter, but the R1 transfer is just bland to the point of looking like a sitcom. Just drains all the atmosphere out of it.
