In all fairness, they weren't expecting it to become Earth's most important battleship like THAT when they picked him. Remember, the Zentraedi arrival was not something they were counting on at that point as they were still testing out just what the ship could do.

The Zentradi are hilarious, and SDF gets dramatically better the more often they are onscreen. In a real way, the story of SDF Macross is about them, its just told from the perspective of the humans.

There's an enormous fleet of Zentraedi, and humanity doesn't survive without losing much more than half the global population.
