Gundam X should have been dubbed and put on Toonami instead of Wing
>>
>>13704173
>Gundam X should have been completed, dubbed, and put on Toonami instead of Mobile Suit Gundam.
Fix'd.

Because really; who thought it'd be a great idea to follow up the massive success of Wing and the still relatively successful runs of SEED and 08th MS Team with the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam?
>>
>>13704183
It's hard to believe, but there are people out there who can appreciate classics.
>>
>>13704194
so, you're saying MSG should have aired on PBS?
>>
>>13704194
Yet most people wouldn't focus on MSG's superior writing and fight choreography just because >muh animation
>>
>>13704194
He's not saying that Wing is better than 0079 you retard
>>
>>13704183
mobile suit gundam aired before seed though, didn't it?
>>
>>13704183
>>13704223
Mobile Suit Gundam aired on Toonami a year before Seed even premiered in Japan. G Gundam started on Toonami a couple months before Seed.

We had this thread recently. While as far as the actual anime goes, X probably would have been the best follow-up to Wing for the North American audience, there were other factors at play. Including that there are virtually no toys for X, which is what made it a no-go.
>>
>>13704183
Pretty much this
They aired all the 90s gundam series, then suddenly U-turned back to 0079 for some reason
>>
>>13704249
>Including that there are virtually no toys for X, which is what made it a no-go.
Didn't they make a Gundam X Battle Damage MSiA? Or am I confusing that with a Freedom MSiA?
>>
>>13704194
It's not about appreciating the classics, it's about keeping it popular long enough to grow so that some would be interested in the classics in the first place.

On top of fucked up marketing strategies that didn't work in the US (limiting the God Gundam figs while flooding in Tauros and Mandalas to artificially boost demand), choosing to air an old series that's clearly from an earlier animation era was never going to endear the series to the young viewers when they had more then modern animation available, from Digimon to Pokemon to Cowboy Bebop to whatever else was current at that time period.
>>
>>13704307
Gundam X also doesn't have Ryu Jose and Sleggar kamikaze scenes.
>>
>>13704223
Yes, as did G and SD gundam.
>>
>>13704314
Gundam X would have also finished its original run before 9/11 happened preventing it from being heavily censored and brought off the air before it finished.
>>
Wouldn't that just make X the burger nostalgiafah series though? Sure you guys could freely hate or like Wing and not be called contrarian or a nostalgiafag respectively, but still.

I am surprised they didn't show Stardust Memory.

Does everyone remember how much of a big deal they were making over Endless Waltz? Jesus christ, almost every commercial for about a week or two was leading up to the premiere of Endless Waltz.
>>
>>13704377
What? I'm pretty sure they did show Stardust Memory. From what I can rememer, they showed pretty much all of the OVAs at the time. Hell, there's even a 0083 dub.
>>
>>13704377
No, I remember it EW having a million re-runs though.
>>
>>13704377
>I am surprised they didn't show Stardust Memory.
But they did.

They aired 0080, 0083, and Char's Counterattack on Toonami or Adult Swim. I know because I found a VHS still with a recording of 08th MS Team and a partial recording of 0083 on it (my DVR back then) not too long ago.

0083 was why I bought 2 GP-02A DX figures from Target and Walmart back then, and had it dual-wielding Atomic Bazookas.
>>
>>13704377
Stardust memory had tits on a poster at one point, I dunno if they could show that.
>>
>>13704386

Did they?
I remember 08th MS Team.. truthfully, I never cared for Gundam when I was a kid. Only really watched Sailor Moon, DBZ, and Tenchi. I remember watching Wing and thought Heero was too weird and psychotic, it was the specific scene where he kind of pops his leg back into place.
>>
>>13704292
There are no Gundam X MSIA at all.

In fact there was no new Gundam X kits or figures besides the old 1996 kit until the HGAW Gundam X kit came out in fucking 2010.
>>
>>13704377
>>13704386
>>13704400
The OVA series aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in 2002.
>>
>>13704394
Because it received the highest ratings of anything Cartoon Network had ever aired at the time of its first airing.

How did we go from that to Gundam being a Literally Who in America?
>>
>>13704430
The executive of Cartoon Network at the time hated anime.
>>
>>13704430
They atopped selling the toys in easily accessible places and the target demographic of the time grew up and therefore out of it. Compare that to western propertoes with much stronger market presences.
>>
>>13704430
>>13704448
Because giant retail stores have thousands of requirements just to carry a product in their store which made selling imported items a loss.
>>
>>13704447
Really? Where'd you hear this?
>>
>>13704579

It's just bullshit "90's kids" spread around, when in reality the ratings began to fucking drop. It's why Adult Swim stopped showing anime for a while. When reruns of Family Guy get 3x the ratings of other stuff they're showing, then what's the point?

They even funded Big O S2 and that flopped.
>>
>>13704206
>MSG Airs on PBS
>Various old people and college professors Fall in love with it
>Gundam experiences a Renaissance in the west brought on by old respectable Gents
>Hobby Shops that sell Gunpla are overran by guys in tweed jackets buying them up and building them in bottles
>>
>>13704194
>It's hard to believe, but there are people out there who can appreciate classics.

yeah and they're typically not 12 year old toonami fans.
>>
>>13704400
>Stardust memory had tits on a poster at one point, I dunno if they could show that.

08th team had actual naked under age girl tits and they where able to cut that out
>>
>>13704671
>Mobile Suit Gundam featured in Wishbone.
>MSG featured in Carmen Sandiego.

I could see both the young and old coming to enjoy it, if it was handled carefully by PBS.
>>
>>13704685
They cut that out and also gave Aina a black bikini bottom and black sports bra during the "hotsprings" scene.
>>
>>13704692

they put towels on the Tenchi girls too
>>
>>13704502
Don't be too hard on them, Americans just CANNOT read subtitles. It is like telling a paraplegic to run the NYC marathon.
They just never grew up with subs and the education sytem is FUBAR.
>>
>>13704696

Go to hell Euroshitter
>>
>>13704307
Here in my country you get into anime by just pirating it in the first place. Excluding some DBZ in the nineties and kidd stuff on Nickolodeon anime has never been on TV at all.
>>
>>13704702
Truth hurts huh. Anyway maybe the increase of Hispanic programming will change things. Mind you I wasn't trying to insult anyone: until 30 years ago barely anyone was fluent in English here. These things take time.
>>
>>13704696
I grew up with dubs and I am still completely fine and prefer to watch subs.

Fun-fact:

0083 was supposed to air on Toonami, but was held back for Adult Swim's action block, which debuted in January 2002. A good chunk of the OVA was presented in edited form because of this, and somehow, the ads even showed the uncut version, while the actual broadcast removed blood.

Nigger it's a cartoon. Mr. Yokoyuki Desusamasempai isn't going to wisk you away to Nippon where your real 2D waifu will give you a titjob just because you listen to hammy Japanese actors instead of hammy Canadian actors.

Explain why it's bad without stooping to superficial reasons.
>>
>>13710379
>implying I didn't watch G recently
Even without nostalgia, it stands out as one of the best Gundam TV series. Hell, its only real competition is Turn A. X and 0079 manage a somewhat distant third place.

>space colonies replace war with giant robot battles, which is impractical as fuck

>1. Giant robots are kind of a meaningless medium, why not just have a martial arts tourney?
>2. Without war, population levels would surely increase. Sure you could argue "make more space colonies" but that is an unnecessary amount of time and resources.
>3. I watched a human man catch bullets between his fingers... I understand this is a cartoon about giant fighting robots... but Jesus christ.
>4. Pretending each nation will exist as it does hundreds of years from now..

Now, I will say, I enjoyed the series.
It was robo mortal kombat... what kind of person would dislike that?
But it was campy AF

What do you think anon?

Those are the furthest from objective reasons to call the show bad.

"it's unrealistic" is a pretty silly reason too.

How come the japs never tried to inject the first Gundam into American tv back in the 70s or 80s? They could of got their market going and the 80s was when pop culture was very weeb for its time (just look at how many stuff had martial arts, ninjas, samruais, and moonrunes back then)

>>

I heard CN was contractually obligaged to aor 0079 because Japan thought we'd love it as much as they did.

We would have, if it came out earlier. But Wing already hit, and the average anime fan of that time was into that kind of trash
