It's very stereotypical but I don't think it's particularly hateful. I guess it's very nationalistic, not quite in the 'japanese nationalism' sense though, more like 'every nation should take pride in its own culture'.
>every nation should take pride in its own culture
Does Neo-Ethiopia have Female Genital Mutilation Gundam or something too? I didn't remember how ridiculous this shit was, haven't watched G Gundam since it was on Toonami back in 2002.
their msv-pre 13th gundam fight gundams looks great tho
>dat okawara pose
>Imagawa wanted to take the piss out of Japan too but the higher ups go in the way
Yeah, imagine. He could have made the japanese representative a guy obsessed with martial arts and his family's honor, piloting a samurai mech and wearing the rising sun on his mobile trace suit.
It uses stereotypes but in a nice fun way like Street Fighter.
And I don't mean fun as in old racist comic fun, they would be insulting for humour. There is nothing mean spirited about it, they aren't shown as bad because of a stereotype but they own it and the machine has great power. It's like when you see something like the Olympics or Eurovision where a video or costume might have stereotypical items or events but it is saying how great these things are and that they are proud of them
Hard to be racist when you treat all sides the same.
Except Germany. Germany got out both alright, and completely not German.
It might be able to.
It gets pretty hot in space, so it's a good thing NeoHolland has mobile gundam windmills to keep it cool
Goddammit, I laughed harder at this than I should have.
Every single country IS a caricature; hell because Gundam look like Samurai and that's generally the theme of the Japanese Gundam in this show (Shining, Rising and God) even the show's protag doesn't get a pass on this.
I fail to see how it's offensive when everyone gets a silly stereotypically-thematic Gundam. Fuck, the american one is a boxer-cowboy-surfer-football player ffs.
I'm guessing someone made a design with an Asura motif and the other Buddhist and Hindu countries already had something more country-specific designed for them. One would think a merlion motif would have been the more obvious choice for Singapore (might overlap with Mermaid Gundam too much, though).
Who was best girl and why is it Allenby?
Literally the only way she'd get better is as if there were two.
That would only cheapen her value actually.
At least G Gundam knows my country, but of course it's the one stereotype that we had of Japanese tourists in the 90's, all gotta go and visit that dumb statue.
The most worthless characters to appear in a Gundam show.
So i've watched two episodes of G and i don't really like it. I just came off 8th MS team which i didn't like much either, hell i only finished it to get to the gouf fight. Anyway, does G gundam have a bad start or something?
Racist no. Stereotypical, yes.
It's a show about international competition, presented primarily to children who already have little understanding of other cultures because they probably have not have traveled there. How do you show a child that a person is from another culture in a show? Do you make them a completely normal person, as they would be in the real world, and give them a completely normal robot? Or do you play up stereotypes to make very clear that the person is of another culture? Sunrise opted for the latter.
After all these years, I just realized Gundam Maxter looks like a football player.
surprised there wasn't a neo thailand
Both are good, dub is accurate to the script aside from the occasional robot name change.
Dub has some bland performances (lookin' at you Rain) and starts out slow but around episode 6 or so everyone starts easing into their roles. Gatha gets fucking nuts screaming attack names, one of the few English VAs to really nail that anime standard.
So are you saying G gundam in general is bad? Or that it's somehow okay for the plot, action, and characters to be over the top charicreatures but not the acting?
Also, the japanese voices aren't good either
Both aren't great, but at least the dub fits the tone.
I think the dub is good and you're absolutely wrong about the Japanese voices. They fit the tone it's going for because you don't laugh with G Gundam, you laugh at it. It never admits it's a romp -- it takes itself 100% seriously and that's what makes it great.
I think that scene is fantastically handled in both the dub and the original, but in general I don't think the acting is that great, but the dub at least knows it.
I really disagree, I think the fact the engliish cast knew that it's fun to laugh reeally makes it more njoyable
Go watch Chibodee's debut in Japanese. Domon spouting off lines like "CHIBODEE CROCKETTO, NAISU GUY" or anything Chibodee says is delivered with such passion, so seriously, is what makes it hilarious.
>mostly being known for Tony Jaa and some loon who thinks he owns Ultraman
Could be worse, really.
In fairness, isn't the current sub script mostly based on the dub's anyway?
Even if it's a joke question, not really. It seems like the staff liked making fun of everyone in good humor, including themselves.
>Japanese-made NES game has a blatantly Japanese guy with Asian facial features and a headband
>Canadian-made Wii game has the bearded Canadian guy be even more obviously Canadian, to the point of chugging maple syrup
That aside, G Gundam can definitely be compared to that game, in terms of earnest nationality silliness.
I'm OK with being stereotyped as a big burly lumberjack. I get morem annoyed with our commercials and how they try to put maple leaves everywhere to try to make us feel patriotic when we buy McDonalds and shitty coffee and donuts.
The only shitty thing about G Gundam is that they used it to sell action figures instead of gunpla. I want a HG of so many of the mecha from this show.
>Gentle Chapman would be changed as well
Is every G Gundam thread going to turn into /pol/ bullshit now?
By the way, Ulube is far more of a Japanese stereotype than Domon is, and they aren't intended to be stereotypes anyways, but symbols of national pride.
post yfw the camera zoomed out and you saw the heart shaped hole
They remember you every year.
In the worst way possible
I actually like these way more than the show mobile suits, neo France's gundam actually looks bad ass
>Pick up the stereotype and tries to make it as cool as possible.
>Western. Mostly cartoons, mostly the newspaper ones.
>Pick up the stereotype and mock it as much as possible.
That's why I like anime/manga.
