I liked S1 a lot because of how different it was from the usual Gundamfare
S2 was a bit disappointing because of how it reverted back to the usual Gundamfare, but pre-timeskip it was still pretty enjoyable. Post timeskip it got noticeable worse.
The first half of the movie was pretty good but the second half kind of shat the bed.

It attempted to be different, but because of it, was forced to return to the usual Gundam tropes in S2.

I was there for every STICKIED livewatch thread and for all the translations of buttmad Japs raging over how it wasn't "Gundam Enough", and Mizushima's bit of depression over it all. I was also there as Japs then cried how it was "too Gundam" after he pulled it all back to the usual Gundam tropes.

I did like it made the effort of the final opponents being legitimate non-human aliens.

Now I just wish we got a full and proper 3 hour 48 minute long parody of the series proper, based on the movie within the movie (which in and of itself was basically a condensed civilian version retelling of CB's rise).

Not too bad all things considered; it condensed 50 episodes into almost 4 hours, and is supposed to be a civilian's interpretation of how the series played out from what the civilians knew. Kind of like the Pearl Harbor movie being rather loose with actual fact in favor of more story and drama.

It's also more likely to be entertaining than the director's cut of the Lord of the Rings movies.

I thought Gundam 00 was pretty good in the scheme of things.
People will always bring up S2 as a counter point, but I think S2 and the movie were just fine in that sort of way where, I kind of expect Gundam to be like that? Since the 90's, the franchise has been this rollercoaster of overall quality that I just have a hard time lending it to some sort of standard anymore.

00 is good enough that if they ever reprint it's physical release again, I'll gladly buy it. Like I've done and plan to do with every Gundam series I enjoy.

The mecha designers were asked to simplify them in order to animate them more often, as one of the complaints with S1 was that the mecha were too detailed to animate often.

One of the reasons I like the 1/100 HG Designer Ver. gunpla is that they add back some of the details they had to omit to ease animation. Seriously; just all that extra white detailing across the S2 Gundams alone help a lot.

Ironically attaching a plane to the back is restrained compared to UC in that regard. Char's Zaku II could go three times faster because of a paint job and the very concept of war in space was enough to cause human evolution. The series attributed it to living in space, but they were living in conditions that were functionally identical to a comfortable life on Earth and newtypes only appeared to awaken during war so it's far more precise to say it was war that did it. They were also able to cause metaphysical anomalies by putting advanced computers in the mobile suits.

The Gundams in 00 were fighting off armies from the start, but then Gundams have been doing that a long ass time by the time 00 aired, including in UC. It's almost like Gundam is more character melodrama and metaphysics than being the gritty war drama and sci-fi that some people appear to think it is. It's never had more than a thin veneer of science wrapped around that melodrama and 00 is at least as good as the original in that regard.

AWotTB - I want to be able to say I like this more than I do, but I can't. It's got some concepts that are great on paper, but really fucks it hard in the execution phase. It honestly feels like this idea would have been better reserved for print than a visual medium, which can be more forgiving of the need to tell rather than show.
Plus, like almost all Gundam movies, tries to do too much plot in too little time, meaning things feel rushed as fuck.

The same thing is functionally true of most of humanity's history anon. The distance between settlements or land masses might have only been hundreds of kilometers instead of hundreds of thousands, but the gap was unbridgeable regardless and it took tens of thousands of years to invent technology that could cross that gap. During which no newtypes awoke that we know of. Even when we did ships were so slow that they often took weeks in the most advanced and expensive ships in the world to reach these new places. A trip from Europe to America took about 6 weeks even 150 years ago for instance. If you wanted to go to Australia it could take up to 4 months around that time. And yet, no newtypes.

Space colonies often don't even really feel that distance anyways, because while it does take a few weeks to cross the distance between the most distant colonies it's almost never as bad as the time frames above and it's mitigated by communication technologies like the phone regardless. Sure minovksy particles might screw with communications occasionally, but most of the time they're not going to be dense enough around a colony to matter. Meanwhile, the White Base made the roughly 1.5 million km journey from L3 to Earth in about 5 days according to 0079, so even a more leisurely ship will probably only take a week or a week and a half to do it, with a trip from opposing Lagrange points probably only taking maybe 3 weeks tops.

So yea, not actually any different from life on Earth on a functional level. The void of space entering in to the equation doesn't actually make any difference since the average person rarely if ever deals with it.
