After achieving more than a month of duty, the previous thread has kicked the bucket and is on his way to deletion. In order to replace him, here come a brand new 70s & 80s mecha thread. If you've been missing for a while, the previous thread is right there >>13461349 .
Most of you already know the rules, right? If not, here's what this thread is for: argue, discuss and dump stuff like artworks, fanarts (if they're well made of course), sketches, magazines' scans, artbooks, DVD/VHS/LD/CD/BD's covers, ads, musics, screen-caps and so on, that have a link to a Sci-Fi and Mecha anime/comic/novel/film/OVA.

That's rather odd. I've got about six episodes left, but I'm struggling to finish it. It felt a lot more like a silly adventure story in the beginning, and I much preferred that to the tired space war shit going on now. I've seen far too much of that to appreciate it, even coming from Tomino.
I'm probably going to hate UC Gundam if I ever get around to watching it.

Does anyone know if there are scans/translations of this book available? It's pretty cool, it goes through the more popular mecha shows from the 80s, has pages with all the suits on them as well as blurbs about the shows, and six interviews. I picked up a copy when I was in Tokyo in 2014, it has interviews with Kenji Uchida, Shinji Takayama, Shigeru Morita, Takao Yotsuji, Takashi Imanishi, and Hirokazu Hiramatsu, but my nihongo isn't good enough to read them yet. When ADV brought over The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Kikou Souseiki (Armored Genesis Book)/Genesis Climber MOSPEADA, and The Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross over to America with Tatsunoko and Harmony Gold's permission, how come their release of Macross had the original credits untranslated with the English credits being a black screen with white letters, wherein MOSPEADA's and Southern Cross' replaces the Japanese with English in their respective ending credits?
>>13768523
- Wataru - The Never Ending Tale of Time had only one Mashin-esque monster but no actual robots
- Ryu Knight - Adeu's Legend FINAL had no mecha content
- God Mars - The Untold Legend at 17 focused mostly on Marg so God Mars only appeared in camera footage and very briefly near the end
- Tri Chargers or any Noza mechs are nowhere to be seen in Zillion - Burning Night
- IIRC Sonic Soldier Borgman Lover's Rain only had the power armors in the last minute
>>13770261
For a 90s example there's also the Dagwon OVA which is just pure fujoshi bait with 30 seconds of new robot. Which is also fujoshi bait.

In addition to these, Lightning Trap: Leina & Laika has about zero mecha content and focuses on foiling a hijacking attempt. Furthermore, Leina is the only thing it has that's related to the Machine Robo franchise (despite ironically being the only part of it with proper subs as a whole).

What are your favorite 70's anime? Because I've watched quite a few and the only great one was 0079, Zambot was good but not great, Getter was stupid compared to the manga, and the rest I saw were just extremely simple and ugly in plot and designs.
>>13776046
Daitarn 3 is pretty fun and has alot of plot compared to most motw shows, too bad its only available in vhs quality.
>>13776046
Voltes V and Zambot 3 for me.
>>13776046
Voltes V, which has a rather interesting backstory for the title robot's creator and is daring for the time by having at least one episode with no mecha combat at all.
>>13776060
I dropped it after like 10 episodes because it had almost no plot. So it gets more plot heavy? I'll probably pick it back up where I left off if so. The reason I liked Zambot's latter half is the larger focus on the story.
>>13776074
Is Combattler V good also? I have been wanting to watch the "trilogy" in order
>>13776085
Combattler V would have been better as a 26 episode series.
The first major arcs overall story was interesting and gave out pieces as it went on before drawing to a satisfying conclusion. The second half...I can forgive a lot of things but the god damn kids that were introduced were obnoxious as shit.
The sequel was a better show.
>>13776046
I haven't watched too many series from the 70s, but I like most of them. Mazinger and Getter definitely show their age, but I like some of the things they did (if nothing else, having a Getter series where 3 gets decent focus is always a novelty enough), Zambot was good, 0079 was good, Daitarn's pretty good, and I'm watching Daltanius as it gets subbed and that's pretty good. Ga Keen and Ginguiser... they're SILLY, definitely.
>>13776085
>So it gets more plot heavy?
Not really. Most 70s shows were pretty episodic, the exceptions are the ones that prove the rule (0079 Gundam was the least and even it had MotW shenanigans, the Robot Romance Series have continual plotlines but are pretty episodic, Zambot's ok, Daitarn and Raideen are mostly episodic.)
What makes Zambot's latter half stand out, I suppose, is that since it's a 23 episode show but still goes through an ending arc, the ending arc takes up a lot more of the runtime.
>>13776271
So are they related at all besides the style? If not I'll just skip to Voltes
>>13776308
I see the "Getter 3 is underused" meme is still going strong
>>13776309
The V Brothers only share aesthetics and the five-man team, yeah. The other two Romance shows don't even have that.
As for Daimos, the bad news is the only way to see the show fully is via a Filipino dub that's in small resolution VHS-quality. The good news is that Shidoni might work on it again: http://z8.invisionfree.com/mSubs/index.php?showtopic=498&st=100.
On a side note, there are crossover manga by Hasegawa uniting all of those series into one universe (with new upgrades), but no one translated them yet.
>>13776323
>The other two Romance shows
There are 4? Are you including Raideen? I always wanted to watch that because of Tomino, but could only find the first half subbed
>>13776314
It is, though? It's not used very often in the manga proper, and most of the OVAs don't use it nearly as much as Getter 1 or even 2. This is a noted problem.
>>13776352
>Are you including Raideen?
He's including Daltanius, the rightful fourth member.
>>13776323
>maybe more Daimos
This is great news.
>>13776352
>could only find the first half subbed
That's largely because the translator has issues continuing after subbing a particular episode, but I'm sure she'll get back to it eventually. That said, like Matt implied (>>13776410), Raideen is not entirely a Nagahama show (but still important).
>>13776410
It's used a perfectly fine amount in everything it appears in.
>noted problem

To elaborate, the episode in question has an insanely stupid plot involving Akira not telling his friends about being blinded by the MOTW, so they wouldn't worry. Since the episode was relevant to the series progression, Starseeker refused to sub it for two years.
https://msubsreleases.(word and press).com/2013/09/24/raideen-25/

The resolution is a bit too high for any MSX without an additional graphic adapter, but the 2 color palette is a good choice, knowing that even if the background can have more colors than what the PC-8801 could display (15 colors), the color-attribute limitation (2 colors per 8 pixel lines) would probably make it hard to add more details to the picture (though displaying huge chunk of colors could have been an alternative too).

If there be a remake of Southern Cross, what does anyone think should be done?
>>13856553
Well Priss' motorcycle change into a mech, and they're all wearing power armors, so I don't see what makes BCG not a mecha show.
>>13856553
>PA
>not mecha
Fuck off
>>13856553
Some of the Boomers are very robotic.
>>13770261
So Italians call Popeye Arm of Iron, weird.
>>13866090
Considering how big his arms are, I think it's pretty normal.
This is a kinda specific question I think, but does anyone have any good recommendations for other shows with this kinda look? The whole 80's workout/aerobics/dance thing. I think Cat's Eye is another good example.

Has anyone ripped the Baldios Blu rays that got released last year? I can't seem to find them anywhere
Why can't I find actual good shows like L-Gaim in higher quality?
>>13872985
No, not yet.
Does anyone have the Obari artbook?
>>13857322
There shouldn't be a remake, to begin with.

>waaaahh cancer
You're the cancer, faggot.
What are some essential 70s to early 80s mecha shows I should watch? I have a bunch of them in my backlog, but I'm not sure which one to watch first.
>>13885811
Start with the oldest one first
>>13885811
Man, I didn't knew Getter Robo G was supposed to be that big. In the Great Mazinger + Getter Robo G crossover movies they seems to have rougthly the same size.
>>13886228
To be fair, scale isn't exactly consistent between various works, especially regarding Dynamic Planning stuff. Still beats Transformers in that department though.
>>13886228
They clearly intentionally disregarded scale in those old crossovers.
>>13886463
>>13886513
I see. Did they ever give the size of the various Getter robo and Mazinger models' size, or did the people who made this pic >>13885811 just guessed how big the mechs are with the help of the cockpit's size? I don't remmember seeing such informations in the Getter Robo and Mazinger comics?
>>13885811
Newfag here, who's the guy right above F91? Just thought it was Daitarn until I actually looked at it for a second.
>>13887857
The various OVA have sizes, like Armageddon. The mangas don't as far as I know, but it is generally assumed that manga Mazinger and Getter are in the 20 meter range, as compared to their anime counterparts where Getter is 30+.
>>13891699
Daioja.
>>13891699
Daitarn is almost twice the size of the biggest robot in that picture.
>>13891704
>but it is generally assumed
By which I mean I've never found a source for manga original and G being 20 meters or so, but I have heard others say so and it checks out appearance wise as far as I'm concerned.
>>13891699
It's Daioja -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hSuPdW_i_s
>>13887857
Mazinger Z: 18m
Great Mazinger: like 22m I think?
Grendizer: 28m maybe?
Mazinkaiser: 23m, unless it's the original version, in which case 28m.
Boss Borot: 12m
Aphrodite A: 15m
Venus and Diana A: The same size as their respective Mazingers IIRC.
Getter Robo: 35m (except 3, which is 20m. And also officially weighs more because Getter Robo makes no sense.)
Getter Robo G: 47m.
Shin Getter Robo: Version dependent, but it is typically in the range of 55m.
Getter Robo Go: no idea
Other Getter Robo Go: also no idea
Neo Getter Robo: 35m I think?
Shin Getter Dragon Ver Daikessen: How the fuck should I know?
Shin Getter Dragon Ver Armageddon: Unknown because it shrinks over the course of the OVA (it is noticeably bigger when it fires the Double Getter Beam then it is when it Shin Shine Sparks, compare to the Getter on its head.)
>>13891704
The mangas don't say anything, personally I assumed them to be accurate to the shows and OVAs but Getter might be a little smaller. (I wouldn't be shocked if the Mazingers matched up exactly though.)
>>13893438
>The mangas don't say anything
That you've noticed. There is likely some source of info out there that I do not know of, though they do look more in the 20 meters range. Speaking of, Go is always 20 meters you dumbass, be it manga or anime version.
>>13893453
>That you've noticed. There is likely some source of info out there that I do not know of, though they do look more in the 20 meters range
Well, yeah.
>Speaking of, Go is always 20 meters you dumbass, be it manga or anime version.
Is there a source on the anime? I forgot that they show sizes in the manga (they did, right?) but that'd be nice to know.
Actually, that might be a good way to figure out the sizes of manga Getters - compare G to the original when they fight, and compare Shin to things Go was next to.
>>13893469
>they did, right
Yes.
>>13893490
As for anime Go, the height is listed somewhere in the Bible as twenty, but I'll be damned it I can find it at the moment. Also, I'm not entirely certain this is the appropriate thread for this discussion.
>>13893500
True.
This is relevant to this thread though.
>>13893534
What's also relevant is Luurah putting out a new Daltanias episode.

Holy shit I didn't notice. Thank you.
>>13906464
You're welcome. That said, here's his reply to a Gordian request in the comments:
>Before I can think of subbing a show, I have to see a few shows of it… even if it’s in another language (like Spanish). If I like what I see… MAYBE I’d make an effort for subs for it. If not, I just set it aside and move on.
>Unfortunately, I haven’t watched Toshi Gordian to make a judgment on that show.
So, it seems that requests aren't entirely outside the realm of possibility, although it would be best to wait for projects to be done first.
When is Oobari Masami going to work on something new?
>>13909771
These fucking cranium monsters appear here at least twice a year.
Is there a list of obscure OVA that are worth watching? My current strategy is to just pick them at random. Sometimes you hit jackpot. But most of the time they're lame.
>Battle Royal High School
That was a lot of fun. I thought it'd be related to the Battle Royale series, but it's not. Good animation, action packed, Thing-creatures (my favorite), nice battles. What else could you ask for?
>Prefectural Earth Defense Force
antother random one I found. It's right now my favorite OVA of all time.
>>13912457
>>Battle Royal High School
This scene confused the hell out of me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkHfe6Z4DzQ [Embed]
So she transforms and kills the guy. But then the guy is also standing a few feet away watching this. Who the hell did she kill then? This isn't addressed in the subtitles.
>>13912467
When you're adapting the first book or so of a manga series into one movie, some things will get lost in the transition.
>Ichiro Itano as the director
Oh, no wonder.
>>13912527
The guy has high end magic powers, so I guess he created a dummy to distract the monster girl. That's my guess.
Also the subtitles are just the transcription of the English dub. It might be clearer what's happening with a better translation.
>>13912527
Has the manga been translated already? I've been trying to look for it recently but I couldn't find it
>>13912457
>Prefectural Earth Defense Force
Awesome little OVA, was lots of fun to watch.
>>13912825
Nope. Not even Hokuto no Gun got to that one yet, though I bet it'd be right up their alley.
>>13912879
This, it's really fun OVA.
There's also a comic that have been made (which the OVA is based on).
>>13915149
>Scopecat
>>13914794
And no translations... ;_;
>>13916891
There's so many good comics and series that'll probably be translated that actually learning runes is a good alternative to just waiting for others to translate it for you.
Not sure if this is the best place to ask
I'm about halfway through MSG, and the pacing is really starting to bore me. I just finished the "Amuro Deserts" arc (EP21). Are there any really exciting developments I should stick around for or can I move on to the next series (and if so, what should that be?)
>>13918884
Shit gets trippy toward the end for a couple episodes, and they also elaborate on a concept that's pretty major in later series that's only been slightly hinted up to this point, I'd keep watching.
>>13919215
Okay, will do. Been hoping Char Axnable will show back up.
I assume they're gonna elaborate on Minovsky Particles
Can someone point me where I can find the original VOTOMS english subbed? All I'm finding are spanish, polish, and cyka sub.
>>13920254
Bakabt.
>>13919459
>I assume they're gonna elaborate on Minovsky ParticlesThey won't, but don't worry, it's not that important to know how they work, just assume that they're electromagnetic particles with a null mass.
>>13898243
Speaking of Music that we love?
Where can I find a full version of
>Let’s Go Gekiganger 3.mp3

I think the Grey Phantom subs are the best version there is.

It does in my heart ;_;
Not even close.
>>13924632
that's not how you Fade In and Raideen isn't even there wtf are you doing
Just got the Robot Damashii A.N.I.M.E RX-78-2, it's probably the most accurate Anime RX we're ever going to get. It's beautiful, and the articulation is amazing.
>>13925588
That looks really good, anon.
>>13925588
Is that Sasuraiger transformation capable?
>>13918884
This guy here again, finished MSG out, haven't started up Zeta yet.
Instead I took a detour to VOTOMS and, gotta say, I'm not really feeling it. I'm on EP8 and fuck all is happening, Chirico's a cunt and the AT gets maybe 5 minutes of screentime every 2 episodes. Does it pick up or us it "chase muh waifu" the entire show?
>>13927307
There will be more mecha action later.
