I dunno, it sort of breaks the set anyway, because there's also SunVul as you said and Jet also (the new Red's motif is really Jet inspired). Jet isn't really a fighter plane show as much as it is a birdman show. Not to mention Ginga, which uses animals. Could also throw Dobutsu Sentai GoBusters into the mix even though it's an alternate universe one shot (and I'm sure they'll do it in some way).

That was the the high days of the Sino-Japanese normalization partially spurred on by Japanese direct investment into China. The apex was probably when Neo Heisei himself visited Beijing in 92. Which also kind of underlined the contradiction/tensions with China that despite all those years after the war and government clamping down on protests, people in China never really got over the War and people were still angry about what happened.

Again those days aren't going to come again given the prolonged freeze in relations between not only China and Japan, but also America and their competing interests, but also the fact that the CCP needs to boost its national cred agains for doing almost nothing during the War.

How much does playing to theme matter to you in a show? Are you willing to excuse a weaker plot in a given season if the theming is strong enough?

After finishing Megaranger recently I realized just how much I appreciate good use of theming. It had several thematic directions it could've taken to make itself distinct and barely touched on any of them, which left it feeling really generic despite decent characterization and writing in general.

The sentai is excellent and the characters are superb, this is a 10/10 show except for... Gai. The idea of a human who is fan of sentai and end up becoming the sixth member and that he represents all the sixth members of previous sentais is actually a good idea in concept, but when he just could mix the ranger keys at will and made an armor of sixth sentais was just... just... and use it every single fucking episode...
