Unfortunately, much of the EXVS community get hilariously mad extremely fast if they have a new person as a partner, (certain /m/ players as well but not as much) so even if you don't mind getting wrecked, pub players will. If /m/ lobbies were still up, it might be easier to ease you into things, but you'll most likely have to practice by yourself/receive pointless hatemail if you choose to play in shuffles. Freedom is simple and so good for newbies but in general it's just not really a good suit at all in FB. It has main ammo issues which the csa doesn't really alleviate because it's basically worthless as far as tracking/startup go and doesn't even have the decency to fastfall you like Zeydra's does. All its tools vernier unless you use the barrel roll, and you'll want to because it increases damage, which adds more ammo stipulations on top. It has overall fairly poor self defence with a crutch 6b which isn't a good thing, exacerbated by a shitty health pool for what its cost and role are which just make the problem worse. Of course learning to play around all these flaws will make you a way better player since it gives you ammo management, spacing, boost management because its movement options are all linear, emphasizes landing punishment and positioning and that's why it's recommended but the suit itself is really just training wheels and even then I'd still say play Injustice instead.

I purchased EXVSFB a month a go or so, I have been enjoying local co-op with my friend and a japanese guy on exchange. But I want to move onto online mode soon.

My friend doesn't watch gundam but RX-78 is his favourite machine to pick everytime because he loves the javelin. The japanese guy tends to either pick deathscythe, gundam, red frame or a seed suit.

Both are pretty competent at arcade when co-oping, if that means anything. But I think I need to learn some combos if I want to start playing online and be at least a bit competent. How much effort does it take to learn how to combo in this game? Is it similar to 2D fighting games with quarter circle inputs?

I am mainly competent (about as competent without any real combo knowledge) with Gyan, Sazabi, Nu Gundam, Gundam, Red Frame and Tallgeese III.

There is more to it than just combos, arcade usually can't compare to fighting real players. Chances are you will lose a ton of matches but you really shouldn't let that bother you as that is how everyone starts. Comboing in this game is rather simple and involve pressing a direction and melee so an example would be 8bbbb. You can sidestep mid combo to keep it going until you knock them down.

always do your best to conserve your boost because the less you have the slower you react on landing. blocking is great but you must always consider the situation and everyones relative position otherwise they might end up catching you anyway.

blocking melee won't stop your opponents attempts at advancing since even if they run out of boost they can still try to go in for last ditch melee. I haven't completely got down melee evasion myself but I usually fuwastep, or whatever it is called, away from them while shooting since I can face them and move away at the same time. Someone boost spamming in your face isn't too hard to avoid except certain suits that are really good at it, most of the difficulty can come from dealing with the hop approaches.

some of this is suit specific since some suits have garbage tracking while others have incredible tracking but for the most part you want to have your shoot fired at a good angle, when you jump with you can turn your suits body to give yourself a better angle.

Gotta boost less mane, stay closer to the ground, the longer and higher you are in the air, the longer you don't have a full bar of boost. And that means the enemy can push you; pressuring you, forcing you to use your boost to avoid any oncoming damage, and that leads to you falling into the vectors, and ultimately, eating a beam or whatever they have in store for you.

Staying close to the ground and not over boosting, 2 boosts can get you in good positioning, but that's if you boost meaningfully. In other words, pushing to keep position with your partner, boosting to fall back, boost to push forward and create offense....There are a lot of cases where just boosting in the right direction at the right time does you and your partner good.

Double lock with your partner. Any front suit that focuses on playing out the neutral will greatly appreciate you more if you help them down their targets, as that means they can in a way, focus on each targets in a much more simplistic manner, since they are going down faster with your extra support.

I also find that playing more aggressively if my partner bursts to help, might as well get in there while they are more powerful and help out too.

Someone is in your face? you can boost away, use tools that have good muzzle correction, or fast start up, or high priority, things of that nature to get them off of you. Like say your playing RX78, and you got like FAUnicorn barrel rolling your ass down, your backshot into bazooka and (It's a stretch but I've done it) catch the unicorn with an early 6B or a dash attack or even a 5B, since they have either good range and priority(6B and dash attach respectively), or deceptively high start up(5B) and you even have a counter, albeit a more finicky.

It takes time man, while I haven't touched it in awhile(since lamodedgamu) I can guarantee you that I'd get swept hard, and I had like more than a couple thousand matches under my belt, and I was still ass. Grind it out homie.

I was under the assumption that you had to boost jump more often than not.
I was actually in a shuffle lobby when I wrote that, and I noticed I was getting hit a little less (although there were still PLENTY more losses than wins).

Yeah boost jumping is still the best way to cover larger distances in a short amount of time and it gives you a good angle of fire over grounded opposition. I think like two boost dashes use as about as much boost as a boost jump does.

If anything, I sometimes think of boost dashes as small step ins or dashes and jump ins as huge jump ins like in say street fighter, they are something you have to commit to, and using it in a situation where the enemy can counter attack usually gets you hit, but otherwise it's a powerful option for start offense, self defense even if you think of jump back air to airs, and so on. Trust me, I still have issues with the lock on indicators, they just sort of fade into the screen. I kinda just feel out when Im targeted, if Im engaging someone, or doing a melee combo, Im being locked on. If My partner is being melee'd or somethin, I'm being locked on. I always feel locked on. But sometimes I think people lock on to you so that they just see your positioning and maybe to scare you.

As you play more matches you'll get a sense of when you are in someone's sights.

Epyon has an instance in which he can block projectiles with his whip just so you know. I've heard that you should be applying pressure with epyons presence since he can do so much damage it should scare them and force focus on you to get your partner to get hits in. Epyon can't do long range so working with your teammate can help you alot. You have to be patient with epyon especially since having no ranged weapons makes it feel like you aren't doing anything.

Thanks id probably have to work on the timing of whipping projectiles, is the block hitbox the area of the whip (ex 4/6ab blocks that direction of projectiles, using 8ab to block incoming forward ones). I found mostly that shuffle partners arent too reliable at keeping up with backup fire, but its the nature of shuffle
