Part of the problem here is that the Japs keep trying to ape 2d animation with CGI, rather than just DOING CGI. If you want CGI animation to look good, you have to let it be its own thing, because it will never satisfactorily imitate 2d animation.

I dunno, it works for Sidonia. There are shots here and there where it honestly does look almost 2D. Black hair helps of course, all the characters with other hair colours look awkward at best.

Action scenes suffer sometimes from the low framerate and complex designs, but they seem to have pulled it together after a few episodes.

I think it was style as well. Long white hair dude looked absolutely appalling whenever he was on screen but he was easily the worst. It did definitely get better as the show went on though.

Yes, she did. When her screen time bumped up, the series had gone on long enough that their technique had improved.

Scenes like pic related were close to that 2D/CGI barrier. For Japan having character CGI be to the point where it's not jarringly different from 2D is a huge deal. Sidonia is somewhat of a trendsetter in this regard. They managed to make that anime not only entirely in CGI, but in CGI with enough quality that it was approachable for people that can't stand CGI. I'm one of those people that can't get past all-CGI shows with horrible characters, and Sidonia managed to be just good enough that it didn't bother me much.

That quality they got was because of the composite style they used. That style they developed worked well, and if they can improve it to near-2D levels then it would be a huge breakthrough for the anime industry, which seems to be decades behind every other entertainment industry where CGI is concerned.

There were 200 years between the gauna arriving in the solar system and when they went to earth and destroyed it. The Sidonia was launched around the time the earth was destroyed. Since it was launched a thousand years have passed, and as it was said the space tetrahedron was found ~600 years ago.

It checks out to me. "During the fifth century after Sidonia's departure" = 400 years + 600 years ago = 1000 years in space. I think the problem is that Sidonia didn't leave right after first contact, it left ~200 years after first contact, when the gauna went to earth. The manga gives only 10 years between gauna arriving on earth and Sidonia leaving, but the gauna had been in the solar system for 200 years before those two events.
