An Armored Core anime.
Works like a cross between Gundam X, Area 88 and Outlaw Star.

Two 25 episode seasons and centers on two AC pilots that used to be close friends (along with a cast of supporting pilots, operators, techs, etc). After a series of jobs, they go their own way.
The secondary of the two is taken for Human Plus enhancements somewhere along the way as the inevitable overarching plot of megacorporations, conspiracy and espionage unfolds.
The two pilots have a rivalry here and there, the deuteragonist pilot gaining more control of his HP Enhancements while the main protagonist simply gets better through cold, calculating strategy and almost inexplicable skill (played off more as creepy than admirable, like the player character in the game), but they ultimately work together again toward the end. One of them probably dies.

Preferably Gundam 00 level animation, or maybe if it was a bunch of OVAs, something more like Patlabor 2 (hey, I can dream).
Tactical/cool, balls to the wall fighting like the Votoms OVA or Unicorn ep 4 & 7 and humour ranging from heartwarming to flat out morbid.

My idea: Armoured Knights: The Legend of Regis

Our story begins in a typical real robot world, all MIQ songs, gay subtext, moustaches, beam sabers, shading, heavy drinking aces and so on. Dragonar meets 0083 meets 08th MS Team.

A weapon test ala Orguss goes very badly wrong and the elite veteran grunt squad get catapulted into the magical realm of Regis, full of androgynous bishounen princes, love triangles, elegant knightly mechs and wizards.

They are clearly the fabled Magic Knights come from the sky to defeat evil. Even if the prophecy suggested it would be schoolgirls.

Cue a raucous fish out of water comedy as a bunch of manly real robot archetypes take on the evil empire in bashed together hybrids of not-GMs and Escaflowne style fantasy super robots. Together with some long suffering sidekicks they will drink, flirt and operate across a high fantasy shoujo world to get home.

Melefs are actually pretty squishy, bro. The only one that's really anything approaching "Super" is the Escaflowne itself (and by implication other Ispanos), and it's not THAT much better than other Melefs, basically around the level that the original Gundam was at when it first saw combat.

A sequel to Black Magic M-66 that's to the first OVA what T-2 is to T-1 and Aliens is to Alien.

Sybel because of reasons, must team up with F6402 who's been reprogrammed, and expose the gubmint's plan to mass-produce highly-unstable M-66 knock-offs, and kick their asses in the process.
Sybel is now even more of a badass, she don't take shit from nobody and will stop at nothing to get shit done now that she doesn't have to protect a loli at all times.
F6402 now has a slightly ditzy personality that contrasts comically with the fact that she's a fucking killing machine. Since she's largely outnumbered, she's also the underdog this time.

Also it includes political commentary about Japan's military dependance on US troops and whatnot.

A story of two protagonists in a mecha war drama. Each starts off as fresh pilot in opposing factions and rise through the ranks to become the veteran ace of each side. They'll battle each other and develop a rivalry and will only meet face to face once the war is over. And no cliches or shenanigans like they were childhood friends or some shit.

The story will highlight each sides' motivations to win with no black or white of which side is good or bad, even until the end. Kinda like how SEED was before they copped out and just created a third "We are the good guys" faction.

Plus, if this is a Gundam series, one of them can be female. She'll pilot the title Gundam while the other guy can use a visored/mono-eyed/bug-eyed mech. If sharing screen time is the only way we can finally get a Female Title Gundam Pilot, so be it.

In the post-apocalyptic future, a German kommando operator is sent to the Zone, the ground zero site of the unspecified catastrophe that eradicated most of civilization. He and his team must retrieve the legendary superweapon that is said to still be there, so that they can win the war and restore Holy Aryan Oztrogoth Empire's glory. Unfortunately, the Russian Bolsoviet Troglosocialik Federation have discovered their plans and are sending their own teams to retrieve the artifact (which, again, is just a legend), a gigantic warmachine of unlimited power.
When he enters the bunker where the artifact is said to reside, he is sent to modern-day earth, along with his two mutant pet geckos.
After a great deal of maladaptation, attempts to murder gypsie hobos in the street and escaping from jail, he pieces together the legends and what little he knows about the current-day world, and sets on his mission to go back to his time with the artifact.
Mistakenly recognizing a world-famous fashion designer for the legendary father of the Oztrogoth Empire and creator of the artifact, he decides to infiltrate the fashion industry: his famished, rugged and athletic aspect will help him in this task. But he will have to face two Bolsoviet operators who have also been sent to the past, and intend to change it to alter the future.

Turns out there's no giant robot, the bunker is just the neobrutalist house the fashion designer lives in, and the giant thing is just a massive plaster bust of himself.
