The interview with the director pretty much revealed that Full Frontal was NOT fighting to kill during the entire battle. Full Frontal wanted to convince Banagher to see his point of view to the very end so he fought to disable rather than kill. Its the reason why Full Frontal commanded the psycho shard to only blow up their weapons and not their suits/cockpits/etc.

The director said he wanted Full Frontal and the Neo Zeong to trap Unicorn like a Spider using a web. I get what the director wanted, but ultimately it made for a lackluster final battle. There was no tension at all. When Amuro fought the original Zeong, the battle was more high tense because they were fighting to kill eachother the entire time.

All this talk of "understanding" in modern day gundam is so sad. Amuro and Char understood eachother's POV. And you know what? They freaking disagreed entirely and tried to kill eachother regardless.

Understanding doesn't lead to peace. It just makes the battle more personal.

I always kind of saw it as a nod to Char's feelings towards Kamille and the pain he felt when he lost him. Char saw Kamille as the model newtype for he future back during Zeta, which might have been part of why Char acted mostly like a different person throughout the series, basically hoping to serve as a role model for Kamille like Lalah (unwittingly) was for him. His residual memories in Frontal may have seen that again in Banagher, and wanted to serve as a role model for him as well, even if it meant breaking down his optimism and hope for the future in the process. It basically felt like Char's ghost was desperately trying to grasp an old memory that brought him a sense of hope, even if it meant destroying the hope of the very person he wanted to understand him.
