The point of his character is that L-Elf has a hard time being honest about himself with others. It was Haruto that let him be more open and less bitter.

Honestly, it is only shit writing (as much as I hate these words, there is no other way to describe it) not "the character he was", because he had no problems speaking with A-Drei in the flashbacks.
While Haruto was facing serious problems, L-Elf's problem was being a tsundere. And by the end of the anime he didn't resolve his own problem, nor he did acknowledge it. I find all of this at the very least ridiculous if not insulting towards people that watched the anime.

Oh well, that is because they went for the cheap drama for both of them, if they decided to write their interactions not well but in a coherent way, maybe we would have avoided some embarrassing pieces of the story.

I'm not sure how his attitude in episode 14, 16, 21 and 22 can be called respecting him.
And this is the coherence problem. You can say he respected Haruto by giving up on feeding, that would be fine. I'm not so sure how you can call respecting Haruto what he did to Akira, Marie and how he refused to help Haruto's friends whiel they were getting gunn'd down by ARUS.
Coherence would imply that L-Elf's attitude towards Haruto doesn't change according to where the plot needs to go, at least if the staff doesn't want to be accused of "shit writing". Not considering that the anime made such a big deal about their friendship, forgetting almost everything else to focus on it during the second cour, so one would expect this side of the story to be well-finished.

This was never really that important. The anime showed how different characters reacted to it. H-Neun and A-Drei were very sane and had no real problems dealing or interacting with others. L-Elf coping system was being a tsundere? Well, fine, but it is very insulting if they made this side of him the whole point of his character (because he had really nothing else to give after the second cour).

Haruto found out through jacking, but L-Elf had no obligation to tell him or anyone else about it. And right, he didn't have to but he did. He had no obligation to open up his past to Saki but he did. He has no reason to express care for the student's well being at all, but he did(make Shoko youkan).

Being back in Karlstein and recalling all the memories and lessons that made him bitter made him slip back into that mindset but also made him recall Liseorette and made him anxious. He normally would have been calm and collected but when he shot Marie he was very angry. As for not helping the students getting gunned down, well look at it this way: your entire reason for existence, the one sole thing you have lived your life for, dedicated yourself to, and endured so much for has just died. Would you be up an at'em ready to go after that.

While we know little about the rest of the Karlstein group's past I think it can be assumed that H-Neun and X-enis were just normal kids saved by Cain and grew to idolize him so they never really saw anything he did in a negative light, A-Drei was a prince who while he had lost his position knew a bit about the secret royalists and had plans and was biding his time. But L-Elf was a street rat who escaped from what looked like a torture camp, and spent his life serving the people he felt he had to destroy alone.

You are forgetting that before speaking with Saki he left Akira alone (after she saved his life) and after that he killed Marie. How is that supposed to be believable, coherent and well written if L-Elf is not even able to control two of the most basic reactions for the sake of his best friend forever? He was mad? And let's not talk about how the staff easily forgot what L-Elf did and ignored it for the whole cour.
Lieselotte's death was just ridiculous, it was mostly his fault for rushing his plans and refusing to kill Q-Vier. Refusing to help Haruto while he was facing a bigger problem which he had no control is just a sign of how little he respected Haruto, it is no different from Shoko's betrayal and L-Elf never apologized or felt bad for it.

By the anime that was not a torture camp, unless the royal family is so dumb to take the princess to a torture camp.

The synopsis mention earth was still around, and some of the images showed the dyson sphere was open in spots, so people assumed that's what the war was about. The sphere would block out the sun, screwing earth over in the process. People were theorizing the reason the Valvrave was so special was maybe it had the secret to FTL travel, allowing those who were on the outside to survive.

Others noticed the sun was awfully close to the walls of the sphere, so they assumed they had some incredibly strong building materials, so any mech made out of those would be indestructible, that sort of thing.

We don't know about his life, but looking and contrasting with A-drei, who HAS actual happy memories of his past he recalls, and H-Neun and X-eins who were the same as A-drei, L-Elf's only happy memory was meeting Lieselotte, that's why he's willing to throw his life for her even if he barely knows her.

A-drei wanted him to abandon his ambition and see what he saw only, he was very possessive. He kind of fuck up and drove him away, even if L-Elf esteem it. In his manga, A-drei realizes in the last chapter that no matter what he did, he couldn't reach out for the light (L-Elf was his light) and someone else changed him, noticing how relaxed he is. So he is determinate to see the world he can build.

Now he can be open with him fully, but only after Haruto and Lieselotte passed away and their impact changed L-Elf. It's a mistake they committed and now are working to solve it. A-drei wants to see that world where they could coexist L-Elf wants to build.

When the preview came out it was like 15 seconds long, and the synopsis was generic as hell. I liked this series, both seasons. Do they have their flaws yes but the most important parts of the story and characters are there. The first season is more upbeat and better while the second is more focused on suffering without end and inferior for it. They really just needed one or two more episodes to iron everything out.
Haruto was a good protagonist and I did feel sorry for him at times and rooted for him to get better, but during the second season they really poured the suffering on too much and never gave him any hope to get better.
The mechs and action were all nice and greatly animated.

I do think haruto gets too much shit, but they really did kind of botch his character. The first season was a steady arc, he had his struggles with his new inhuman status, and mostly came to terms with it.

And the support VVVs having unique weapons schemes is going to fun if it makes it into SRW. I want my yos yos, giant cannon fists that turn into many laser knife fists, and laser cross bows.
