More than just a prequel, I'd rather see a story set in the early days of the war, before the Earth Alliance had Gundams and had to hold the line with outdated designs. For instance (if the automated translation is correct) the gunships in >>10970948 are more like hover tanks than helicopters.
Like the UC Hardgraph manga, but set in the Cosmic Era.

However, as you said, all the SEED sidestories are more of that Chiba/Tokita Astray garbage.

Now this is odd. It seems to me that this is, probably (and quite ironically), the only powered exoskeleton we've ever seen in Gundam. ML and Macross have them as well, but not Gundam.

Just needs a powerful enough gyroscope system to keep it balanced out and a collective pitch rotor for maneuvering. It just works better if helicopters have a tail to help with counter rotation.
