And you guys said we'd never finish. Or even that we wouldn't be done by Christmas this year.

Episodes 1-8 are from the ACR set, they'll be redone at some point, probably when the Blu-Ray raws show up, or even a complete set of nicer DVD raws would work really.

Links in the next post as usual.

My god. It's beautiful. I remember seeing this project start, all those years ago, and drifting across board to board when my interest in /m/ waned (as my hobbies tend to do, I go on big benders), and now I'm back and it's done after all these years.

Great work, guys.
>>
Wow, it's really finally done.

>>
Woo-hoo, it's finally done!

When I finished timing Layzner, I wrote a long entry in my personal blog about how much my involvement in the project improved me as a person. I don't wanna attentionwhore and repost it cause it's very long (though Starseeker was kind enough to link it on her post), so I'll just say this.

As odd as it may sound, I'm profoundly grateful for the opportunity to have worked on this project. I was just a timer, and not as important as Starseeker and Sasword, of course. Still, that I was able to help them proved I made the world around me a better place, even if in the tiniest of ways. Puttin' a smile on a fellow mecha fan's face, for even just a single moment, is more than an excellent use of my time--at least I think so.

So, thanks again, sasword (wherever you are), starseeker, Iriliane, Chokutsuu, UK Windom, Ametuchi, R-Blade,LN, DrugLordKai and ObsidianTK for all of your hard work. A "thank you" is the least you've earned. And thanks to everybody on /m/, too, and any other mecha fans who may happen across our board. I can't speak for the other members of /m/subs, but knowing even one of you guys will get a kick out of this series makes me a very happy timer. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
>>
My God, it actually happened. It actually finally happened.

Somewhere in Japan, entire clans of subninjas are committing hari-kari right now to atone for their disgrace.

Absolutely fantastic, cracking job guys. Cross another series off the list. Thank you all so much for your effort.

So what's next? Galvion? Dorvack?Just kidding, take some rest guys, you've more then earned it.

These BD rips look a bit shitty. I'm not sure if it's the fixed bitrate hurting it, or if there was some degraining on the disc.

First of all thanks to the entire /m/subs crew and others for finally finishing this project.

Now, the question, is someone gonna unfuck the video quality of all this at some point? Like the first eps are ancient hardsubbed AVIs, would be cool to get those subs transplanted to good quality video.
>>
>>10967862
Is that really a BD rip? Looks more like an upscaled DVD to me.
>>
>>10967892
I'm sure it is, but it's held back by degraining and low bitrate. And maybe it was a 16mm film originally, too.
>>
>>10967888
Yeah at some point, since we do have the Lupin Gang scripts for them. It's just the DVD rips we have aren't particularly bril either.

>>
>>10968312
I have the same rips and they are 2-pass @ 8500 kbps (around 1.5 GB an episode). So they aren't really all that bit rate starved.
They might have been filtered though, it is hard to know without seeing actual blu-ray screenshots.

Still, considering what the dvd rips look like, the blu-ray rips are a pretty decent improvement. The colours are better on the blu-ray, and lines are more well defined.

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/79717
>>
>>10973024
Do you happen to know where the Blu Ray rips are?
>>
>>10973046
I got the rip from the private chinese torrent site U2.dmhy.org. I don't know if it has been uploaded anywhere else. It's like 80 GB, so it'd be a commitment to upload it anywhere else.

>>
>>10981188
Calling bullshit already.
>>
>>10981218
The restoration would have cost a fuckton, they always do. vap and Bandai are stingy bastards, so generally the big restorations have a partner. Sentai have been named that they stepped in for this but we'll see.
>>
>>10981188
>>10981224
Really?!
>>
>>10981427
Well BD anime releases of old shows need a lot of work and that costs a lot. The Macross DYRL BD remaster was done on the cheap and it really shows. So now a lot of places are teaming up with foreign partners to offset the cost. Sentai are, apparently, the best of the bunch from what I hear (as in not dicks to the Japanese companies involved).

>Spend five years translating Layzner

Wait...did Eiji just leave a guy who helped him to die at the hands of a psycho at the end of episode 04 - rather than just shoot the psycho? What a fucking asshole. Imagine how the viewers back then felt when layzner was cancelled. Wiki says the viewership was at a high 10% too.
>>
>>10996418

Why did it get canned if the viewership was so high out of interest?
>>
>>10996438
The sponsor went bottom's up because they were selling cruddy air conditioning units, iirc.
>>
>>10996438
One of the sponsors, Sanyo, a Japanese electronics manufacturer, was involved in a carbon-monoxide poisoning scandal with their fan heaters. They pulled out after the second cour.

Furthermore, Layzner's plamo sales were in a slump, and Bandai (main sponsor) reached the decision to cancel it after 3 cours.

This is according to the Japanese wiki, anyway.
>>
>>10996462

Huh, you'd think with such high ratings some other company would have been willing to sponsor them in Sanyo's stead. Kind of a shame.

Also, I'm still getting a chuckle out of the whole thing about Eiji's dad being the real, true first man in space a few days after I watched the episode. The idea that Japan had a space program in the 60's that no-one ever knew about but scrapped it after one of their astronauts disappeared so as to keep up public morale despite the public never having been informed of it in the first place makes me giggle.

-Eiji is a bum, and licking boots for money
-Rowan is a FUCKING TRAITOR

This shit is getting hard to watch. They're just pretending, right? They're just faking, right? This shit's getting dire, and I don'ts like it!

Well, now I know where Tonfa Eiji came from, but sheesh, what a change in tone.

No.

I think you knew better than trust the anime character with glasses, anon. Those are always hiding something.
>>
>>11005467
Watch both.
I mean, unless you've got a terminal disease that means you can't spare the 20~ minutes to watch the last episode to compare, no real reason not to at that point.

I can't be down with this.

Man, while on the subject, is it just me, or was 80s Japan completely in love with the Mad Max setting? I don't think there's an 80s mecha series that doesn't have elements of it

I never get that if they're going to go through with the arduous process of scanning every piece of film into 1080p, why fucking toss it all away for DVNR? It's not like your audience for this show some 30 years later are supergundamplebs or kids anymore.

That skullgunner is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.
>>
>>11009739
At least the skull-gunner is polite enough to wait. It's not that it's slow or shit like that. When it's tracing its targeting laser all over you and your friends for like a good minute or too, it's just giving you time to reflect on your life before you are executed.
>>
>>11009692
I liked the Skull Gunners, although I don't know why it took so long for them to be able to find a human and kill it.

Also, has Eiji only killed one person in the entire series?
>>
>>11010300
Maybe they scan their target's DNA patterns to make sure they're targeting an Earthling, rather than a Gradosian.

Some weird design choice that we thought made sense at the time and in hindsight was a terrible idea. We put the full stops back somewhere around the 2nd arc or so.

Mind sharing the reasoning you guys reached to at the time?

I've been waiting for Layzner to be completed for a long time so that I could finally watch it, but now the possibility of BDs rips coming out is making me thing about waiting.

Advice me, /m/.
>>
>>11016319
Just finish it now. If the BDs come out later, you can watch it again in BD quality.
>>
>>11016319
I say you watch it now, it's definitely worth it. And a rewatch in BDs just makes it sweeter. That's pretty much my experience with old shows that have gotten BDs (early UC, Bubblegum Crisis, Macross).
>>
>>11016319

I'm not sure it's actually worth watching at all. I'm nearly 10 episodes in and it's really mediocre, verging on actually bad. I've no idea what people see in this show so far. Watch Giant Gorg or Vifam or something instead, presuming you haven't already.
>>
>>11016319
Watch it now. We still aren't sure about the BDs, and even if they do come out, you can just rewatch it.

>>11016340
The mecha animation is fantastic--one of the best of the 80s--and the tension between the characters within an atmosphere of mistrust and a desperate struggle for survival is really compelling.
>>
>>11016319
Just watch it now. Just because BDs are/might be coming (was it announced it's getting BDs?) there's no guarantee we'll get rips. Hell, look at Orguss BDs, nobody ever bothered timing subs for it. And Ideon we never even got more than a few random episodes ripped.
>>
>>11016922

> The mecha animation is fantastic--one of the best of the 80s

Yea, but almost all of it is the characters shooting at dirt or missing the target entirely. The targeting computer stuff is especially baffling to me, because it just makes it even more obvious that the characters aren't actually trying to hit Eiji or his friends properly at all. He's almost a reverse Kira - everyone deliberately misses him because...reasons?
>>
>>11016981
I always got the feeling they kinda wanted to take him alive to make an example of him. This goes out the window after Gail cops it

Just watched epi 1-12...good show...although the storyline is kinda dragged...the thing I like most about Blue Comet is the terrain! Fuuuuuu good reminder that it's SCI FI show. Dare I say better than Gundam, esp for it being released in the 80s.
>>
>>11018094
Oh, the terrain reminds me of Space Above and Beyond some SciFi show in the 90s.
>>
>>11016981
I really appreciate the animation though despite this. I'm only up to episode 2 right now, but seeing Eiji 180 using his jets whilst keeping a foot on the ground was some great shit. Then they go bumbling through that canyon and ramming into stuff...

The people who animated Layzner really gave proper consideration to the kind of maneuvering you might see from a humanoid mech, and I respect that.

Well seeing as BDs only got released recently-ish, the answer is no. They're mostly from raws with DVD in the ancestry. 1-8 were apparently done off LaserDisc rips

I have to say...the final episode was just so goddamn bad. It's like they tried to compress ten episodes into one. I hate when good shows get their funding cut.
>>
>>11023416
That's why you gotta get the 3rd OVA
And that's what happens when you get your funding cut in the 80s, you go down fast and hard.

It's pretty unfortunate.
Still a better ending that GSD
>>
>>11023459
When it's a race between an awake quadruple amputee and a case of brain death, obviously old stumpy's gonna have the edge.
>>
>>11023459
Can I skip the first two OVAs? They seem to be just a one big recap.
>>
>>11023472
Go ahead, but if you want something resembling an ending, you'll get the third
>>
>>11023472
Can skip the 1st one, 2nd one's not such a good idea due to the lead in to the 3rd one.
>>
>>11023482
I noticed that, but that's just the last 20-15 minutes.

By the way, has any SRW game ever fully followed Layzner's plot? With the timeskip and all that.
>>
>>11023503
J has post-timeskip elements show up, but not so much of the plot.
>>
>>11023528
Yeah, I know. Layzner's plot in J basically ended before the timeskip and later it was just random encounters with the Gradosians.
And in OE it had no plot except for a few battles.
Haven't played Shin so I know nothing about it there.
