Well, at least there isn't someone suggesting THIS will finally be the entry to connect to CC as a prequel like people were suggesting for AGE and 00.

How fast do mecha run? How fast can they run?

Obviously, size and tech level are considerations. But let's say you've got an 18m tall robot -- like a typical Mobile Suit. That's 10x the height of a human. Assuming it's got roughly human mobility/agility, would it be able to run 10x as fast as a human?

Does this mean a 55m super-giant robot could run 30x as fast as a human? What's he expectable delay (the "drag" if you will), if there is one? What would be the upper limit of running speed for a giant robot?

This is the kinda stuff I think about when I can't sleep. Because I'm the kinda guy who hangs out on /m/.

You need go to go to sleep, and I think you may be drunk. You can't come up with a magical formula for height to speed. Humans aren't equal to each other in speed. Mechs will be even more disproportionate.

Well, naturally there will be differences. Aside from the variance between different humans, there's technology and design to take into account with mecha.

Some mecha are clunky and creaky and sluggish; some are mind-bogglingly agile; hell, some are shaped like lions and cheetahs and such.

Still, I wonder what kind of conclusions we can draw from what we've seen...

ITT: My first impressions on the first five episodes of Iron-Blooded Warriors, followed by questions for the community.

I'll start by saying that I hadn't really looked into this particular Gundam series, until now. I went into it withoutt knowing anyone else's opinions or what to expect, so I'm going to be very honest. I'm mostly familiar with the UC timeline and I decided to give this a shot... I'm wondering if I wasted about 100 minutes of my life, just now.

[[TRIGGER-WARNING: The following is an opinion.]]

Aside from the tremendous amount of ho-yay, there wasn't anything else in this anime, so far, that I liked or cared about. It was a frustrating experience to watch even just the first five episodes, so-much so that I need to release autism-pressure in the form of this review. While what I've seen, so far, is serviceable on a technical level, it suffers a great deal in the plot and the characters.

I'll start with the plot. The show starts with an enigmatic flash-back, so it goes and annoys me immediately. After a deep breath, I continue to watch more events happen with precious-little context and background that the show has given. The only thing that's been established is that Mars is poor and oppressed, Earth is wealthy and oppressive, all adults are monsters, and that feral-children are dangerously violent. There is an on-the-nose classism theme going on, but the narrative is such a mess that after five episodes we still don't know what the "protagonists" or antagonists want or why. No one seems to have a plan to achieve a goal and just sort-of play it by the ear, so we don't really know what is as stake other than people lives, because people are being killed by mechs for reasons. --->cont. part 2

It makes sense in a mystery-driven plot not to give out all the details immediately, but it also needs to catch your interest to reel you in and make you want to become invested in the story and characters. Everyone's actions are so vague and disjointed that it is hard to care about anything that is going on.Everything felt like an excuse to have action scenes happen. The only mystery here is where the coveniently-placed Gundam came from and how anyone present at that facility had the resources, knowledge, and expertise to make functionable a centuries-old machine that no-one alive knows how to reproduce.

The plot also suffers from inappropriate tonal-shifts that make it nigh-impossible to determine this anime's level of self-awareness. It rides this awkward line between comedic satire and grimdark, dystopian drama. There are wide gaps of uninteresting dialogue that reveal virtually nothing in service of virtually nothing, it became a task to pay attention to these scenes. It also doesn't help that I couldn't stand almost the entire cast of characters, which I'll get into, now.

Not one of these characters has displayed any depth to them, they are all one-dimensional, cliched, unlikeable, and most-importanly: unrelatable. Apparently, from what I can figure, the primary protagonists are a living weapon and his cool-dude-sterotype handler. Said living weapon seems completely devoid of emotion and does what his handler tells him to do without so-much as a twitch, which includes murder(also has creepy scent-fetish). --->cont. part 3

Mikazuki is a remorseless mind-slave and I'm not sure what we're supposed to feel for him, other than pity and anger (same basically can be said about every "protagonist" character). He was not "chosen" by the Gundam, but rather he was single-minded enough to risk his life on potentially-fatal augmetic surgeries that made him, literally, the only one capable of piloting it. When at the controls of the Gundam we never get the idea that he is ever in any real danger or that anyone can even pose a challenge. For some reason he is the love-interest of the damsel-in-distress character even though he is an emotionless 'tabula-rasa'. He is unstable, incredibly dangerous, at the helm of an advanced weapon, and at the behest of a teenage boy. Terrifying.

Mikazuki's handler, who's name escapes me, is somehow even-less likeable. Despite his desperate origins he still manages to be this brash, handsome, alpha-tough-guy-teenager who always knows what to say and does unimaginably-risky things that, somehow, turn out more-or-less ok in the end. Everything he says is coated in a thick layer of cheese and he makes me want to punch him every time he opens his stupid mouth. This asshole is no Kamina and feels horribly forced / out-of-place for the setting. --->cont. part 4

The antagonists are headed by moustache-twirling do-badders who want to do bad things. The only notable baddie was also, ironically, one of the only characters I liked: Crank. He was the only one who seemed to behave like a sane individual and gets brutally murdered for it. After he realized he was fighting child soldiers he retreated out of a sense of morality and honorable integrity. He then gets berated for abandoning the operation and is ordered back to complete his task. Knowing that if he stepped down, someone else would just step-up with a whole brigade of mechs, so he goes alone to minimize loss-of-life. He challenges Mikazuki to an honorable melee duel to settle the matter, but scarcely has the heart to to give it his all because he realizes he'd rather die than kill children. As he sat dying in his ruined mech's cockpit, he gives Mikazuki some heartfelt last words. Last words that Mikazuki cuts short with two consecutive shots from his handgun, followed by sniffing a bracelet a girl gave him in one of the creepiest scenes I've ever sat through.

All the other characters are just props for the stage.

In the end I am left feeling confused and dirty, it was like some kind of fever-dream. I feel like I watched a Japanese mad-man's interpretation of 'Lord of the Flies' and only makes me think of Mobile Suit Gundam in the most superficial way possible.
[[Opinion ends here.]]

Now that I got that out of my system I'd like to ask a few questions that I am genuinely curious to get answers to, for any who feels that they can give a reasoable response.

-What is the general concensus for this anime? (for either Western or Eastern audiences)

-What am I missing? (things I overlooked, cultural boundaries, obscure genre, etc.)

-What was your initial reactions when watching for the first time and your overall opinions of the anime?

-Does the anime change in any significant way beyond the first five episodes?

Better in what sense ? Both organizations were instruments of oppression. The difference between the two if there was one was that in the Titans no one was really redeemable, not so in the A-Laws. By the end of 00 a number of A-Law officers rebel. You don't get that in the Titans (1 is not enough).

No. They canonically lost the OYW. Even their insurgent remnants lost.

The only way for Zeon to win is if Bandai completely retcon MSG or creates some alternate timeline story like Gihren's Greed.
>>
I'd actually like a series where they win, just so that there can be a follow up series where they're the overlords and being as shit as ever while the fractured EF is the underdogs and we can get some kind of insight in to the faces and personnel leading the EF and the ideals of their soldiers for once - rather than them always being a distant, faceless bad that is lent some humanity by the tepid support of the protagonists.

Or just make a show that starts off with the premise that there was a recent, succesful Zeon uprising at some point and we're going from there. You don't even have to show said uprising really.

Mind you, any such show would probably both have Zeon as the top dogs and paint the EF as faceless bad while making them the ultimate losers as well as the people who lost the war, so it probably would't work out regardless. I just think it'd be nice to see some sympathetic personnel in the EF besides our protagonists and put some faces to their leadership for once.

Watching Zeta as well, but I'm in the last quarter. Indeed the two main conflicting parties of the series should be soon cleared out, the 5-6 first episodes are quite rush-y in-universe but they take a break at some point.

Now though there is some opposition, I'd say they aren't as obvious as in 0079 where the two antagonists make more sense (imho). The One Year War is basically an indenpendance war turned super ugly, the conflict in Zeta is much less obvious, with basically a military subsection of the Federation (the Titans - which are some sort of space waffen SS really) being fought by a group (the AEUG) deeming that the Federation went too far after the OYW (and the destruction of the last Zeon bits). It's two groups fighting each other, not two nations as in 0079 and sometimes it's hard to get how it could turn into something that big, though there is some explanations (which aren't super satisfactory I think).

And among all that, there are some weird allegiances I still don't quite get myself. As in how does everyone from 0079 especially is cool with Lt Quattro (nudge nudge) exactly? Some like Amuro I can understand, but others like Bright...? I mean, it's cool to see Quattro as some sort of mentor figure and for him it makes sense to be there, why is he tolerated by the others is a little bit more dubious, especially when they plain get friendly and all.
>>
>>14991656

You have Titans, who are a subsection of the federation, and AEUG who are rebels fighting against this subsection of the federation. Sometimes the feddies get involved as well in helping the Titans.

>>14991936

>As in how does everyone from 0079 especially is cool with Lt Quattro (nudge nudge) exactly?

Kai's letter was a thing. Other than with Amuro, it isn't totally clear that he is Char at first. That and Char is known as someone who was actually fighting against the Zabis all along, so it's not like he is a hardline Zabist like Haman, who they did have issues allying with. The rest really had no reason to think poorly of Char beyond him being a former enemy combatant, which isn't a reason.

So... I loved nr.1, and hearing that the mechplay in the sequal was better i picked it up during the 50% sale. Anyone of you playing this? The feel of sitting in a mech throwing out Thermite boobytraps and blowing 4-5 people to kingdom come with a well placed canister feels great. you can customize their looks, nose art (see pic, i just unlocked this myself), 5-6 different classes of mech with different movesets, skills etc. i havent had this feeling since Battlefield 2142. The mechs (even Northstar, the lightweight) feels heavy, their movement is kind of clunky and boosting only helps that much.

I dont know why, but dont you feel the mainstream has warmed up abit to huge walkers?

From the hour or so I've played Rider Revolution I'll give a small review for people wanting to know more than "It's just AKRG".

If you've played AKRG2 it's a bit different, the fighting on different planes is the same but it feels like you have more combos and are generally more agile than before, but enemies are harder to hit on the planes for whatever reason. Instead of being thrown into a linear level and just going right they've gone for a Metroid kind of thing where you access different rooms, there's basic platforming now, and you have to replay levels with different types of security cards to access different rooms. There's a bunch of missions separate from the story to play (Can't remember if ARKG2 had them or not, it's been a couple years), and you unlock them as you unlock new Riders or save them in the story.

The story levels also seem pretty big, I've only gotten through half of the first level in maybe 30 minutes while fighting every enemy along my path and taking the detours. However, since it's a kid's game they fling health items at you every four feet (I already have 20 life orbs on me, and only 2 of them were from QR codes), but the enemies themselves also hit like trucks when they're not basic mooks.

TL:DR - If you like beat 'em ups it's still pretty simple, but it's still a good chunk of fun and a good improvement over the older ones.
