feeling well there Tachibana-san? you look a little yellow.
T-minus 68 hours to best bike boy's death
Why are serious modern mecha shows often incapable of wrapping up their plots cleanly, when parodies of mecha built on cliches and stock characters often have strong finishes? Is it because the comedies don't get caught up in the details? Is it because the serious shows try too hard to be novel and write themselves into a corner? Is it because most modern comedy shows with mecha are shorts with a half-hour of combined run time, and therefore don't have much writing to begin with?
>>15046843
It's because the focus is on creating an exciting and crazy beginning, and then running on autopilot for the rest of the show because everyone already bought the merchandise
>>15046843
Modern? Need I point you to Dangaioh?
We have a far higher ratio of shows with endings than we did back in the 80s. Back then it was a miracle if they even got an ending
>>15046961
No everything old is perfect and good.
What does /m/ think about The Big O?
>>15046533
It's a Big OOmae ga da
>>15046533
The design itself is 10/10. I fucking love the pile bunker arms and the head is cool.
Show itself is a mixed bag. It's better when it's just episodic mystery stories rather than focusing on the core plotline and it can get really muddy in the final arc in particular. But it's charming enough to stay at least decent.

Big O
Hey /m/, I confess that I'm not that familiar with mecha media besides some of the Armored Core games and a little bit of MWO. I've also seen the first season of Evangelion for what that's worth.
Anyways, I'm looking for more serious mecha media because I'm working on my own story. I want to see what stories have already been done. The main questions I want to explore are:
>Why do mechs exist in this universe?
>Why are they piloted in the way that they are?
and to a lesser extent
>What is the overarching plot reasons that the mechs are used.
I suppose you could boil my question down to "gib /m/core pls" but I kind of want to discuss these reasons in depth or at least get recommendations for media that explores those themes to some extent.
Heads up, anon. You're not going to get a 100% foolproof, unattackable reason why mechas are being used. I suggest just accepting that unless you're going for the most gritty and down to earth interpretation, mecha aren't going to be one hundred percent realistic.
However, you can still look for explanations that hold up within the universes that have formulated them. I personally don't know much about Patlabor, but I think it explains mech with some pseudo-realistic justification.
Gundam- At least the Universal Century- Goes out of its way to justify mechas as being developed for space operation, with the limbs being used for flight adjustments.
>>15046511
Oh, yeah, I don't mind it not being justified within our universe, but rather how writers have incorporated mechs into the universe be it as a military application, or a requirement to fight aliens, etc.
In the meantime I'll start researching Patlabor.
I've never really followed Gundam but I find that curious as the mechs seem distinctly humanoid. I'll read up on the in-universe "origin stories."
>>15046577
Heads up on Gundam: It's basically a franchise with different universes that share some aesthetic and thematic points, so the origins and raison d'eitre of/for mechs are pretty different, or sometimes jut not touched upon.
Another anime that has an interesting take on mecha is Code Geass. The mechas there basically started out as semi-autonomous escape pods- Evolving overtime to become fully fledged military and civilian tools.
Shit unfortunately goes full on mecha escalation, laser-swords-and-prototypes-for-everyone in S2 tho, which is a pretty huge disappointment considering the way they portrayed mechs in S1.
I thought this show was lighthearted
That's about the point where ZZ drops the bullshitThe true turning point is when the OP changes

You know what they say...
"Bigger the light, bigger the shadow."
...or something along those lines

WHY IS THIS ALLOWED?
Ultoraman seban
I'm OK with this. The last one was an emulator after all. At least it didn't get raped, like megaman ports on mobile tend to get. Why does it look kinda sluggish on the video though?
Won't buy it, I have better on mobile already.I probably would buy it if it had the GB games in color.
>>15046117
Yeah
Post the good deals. I want to make a chart of the best games to get.
Is Project Nimbus any good?
>>15046003
No.
Gigantic Army
Steel Strider
Supercharged Robot VULKAISER
Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours
Brigador

>The New Japanese Power Rangers Series Sounds Delightfully Bonkers
How many figures of Gunbuster are there? I only have the Soul of Chogokin so far.
And how old is this one?

2005
There's a Revoltech and one by Studio Half-Eye as well. And Super Robot Chogokin.
Sup /m/, somewhat new to the genre here.
Having gained interest in the series after playing Super Robot Wars, I've watched Gundam Wing and Gundam 00 and I enjoyed both.
After deciding I was into the series (even if I'm still partial to Supers over Reals), I've taken upon myself to watch as many Gundam series as I can. I've since watched the original Gundam and am halfway through Zeta.
Are there any Gundams I shouldn't bother watching? I keep being told SEED Destiny and AGE are pretty bad, but haven't been given any real arguments as to why.
Is SEED just as bad as SEED Destiny?
Give me some insight here.
No, watch everything.
Do it in production order.
Drop and move on to the next if you feel you're not enjoying it.
It's that simple. Everything else is wrong.
>>15045417
That's another question, actually. Why should I watch in production and not chronological order (say, for Universal Century Gundam)?
>>15045450
Because the answer is ALWAYS production order you fuck
Tons of OVAs and shit assume you know what happens in shows made before them
REALLY?
>>15045105
I see nothing wrong here.
>>15045105
Giant gatling guns make EVERYTHING better
>>15045105
>go to grab beam sword
>hit self with shield
can we talk about the machines in star wars? i simple love the U-wing
also a question why the empire didn't use this
Was it really THAT bad?
>>15044920
It was mediocre thing is though Gundam SEED Destiny introduces a few thing with in retrospective makes Gundam SEED look even dumber.
>>15044920
>shit protag
>shit rivals
>shit bridge bunnies
>shit QQagili
>shit idol shit (if I hear that song ever again I might literally die)
>shit Char clone
>shit sequel.
Stargazer was sick tho
>>15044920
Yes. Yes, it was.
Stargazer was OK, but fuck having to plow through this shit and SEED:Destiny.
>robot upgrades to a new form for the first time
>the enemy fires everything and the kitchen sink at it and appears to completely obliterate it
>the smoke clears and the robot is standing completely unscathed
FIND OUT NEXT TIME, ON DRAGON BALL Z.
>>15044782
What if... the upgraded robot was actually fucking rekt by the enemy attack instead? It would be funny to see at least once.
>>15044782
>Great Goldran
>New form
It's literally a glorified attack sequence. It never does anything but shoot the Golden Arrow
>>15044930
Happens in Diebuster, with the titular robot no less. Very symbolic of the way the show sets out to disappoint any and all expectations you may have had of it.
>the robot was the best character
Why is this so common?
They're like dogs. They just wanna do a good job.
>when the machine is more human than the rest of the cast
Washburne can't get a break in space can he?
