The Junk Planet and the Sharkicon Planet feel like really filler. Which seems rather weird. They should have just spent 5-10 minutes giving Unicron and the Autobot Matrix of Leadership a backstory.

He designed the cast and robots while also outlining the story. He would also draft the beginning of each story. All of this is given to Toei who change it as they see fit and then create brand new stories following the "origin story".

Emphasis on 'little'. The OVAs already had pretty good animation, so slightly more shading on Banagher's hand probably isn't going to be a tie breaker for you.
