buddha mouth with chinese army hat. good design

And yet he's inspired by Robot Keiji. See the irony?
Why did they make a movie about 999 without any of the character development or best episodes, changing the backstory, spending a fourth of the movie on the characters from another show that wasn't on tv or home release at that moment and spoiled the ending two years early?
What were they thinking?
You could say that spoiling the end doesn't affect the three years of material that was the heart of the show, the ending was just a wrap up after 110 episodes of weird planets and sad life lessons. But the movie doesn't give that impression, it's all plot, no one would try the show if it's just an overly long version of the lack luster story they made up to shove as much Harlock of possible. He barely does a cameo in the show!
>>15797515
Simple. The manga was shit and the TV series also was shit so they thought they could maybe make it good by changing it completely.
>>15797675
Aren't you unique, anon
Is this guy the best /m/echa protagonist of all time?
>>15797281
I think Setsuna F. Seiei is better.
A big thing a lot of protagonists go through is how they mature through the conflict. That being a child soldier is a key part in helping them become good adults. Setsuna's experience as a child soldier didn't make him more mature, it damaged him. He gives up believing in God but worships the ideals he associates with his savior the 0 Gundam, that peace can be achieved through armed force. He is still a child soldier for Celestial Being, same shit different organization.
But in the second season, Setsuna begins to heal. It's not the conflict that's making him mature, it's the idea of peace achieved through non-violence. While he still kills Ribbons, the man who made him Setsuna F. Seiei, he is still changed from who he was before. He's not going to strongarm the world into being peaceful, but is going to do stuff behind the scenes to make sure it remains peaceful. And in the movie, he manages to save the Earth not through the destructive power of the 00q, but through it's ability to communicate with others. His ideals have changed, and because of them mankind is able to advance to it's next stage by spreading out among the stars.

Amuro's a bland Tomino character, so no, absolutely not. Even Roger Smith is better, and we never find out what his deal actually was
>>15797324
Fuck off, Amuro created his archetype.
I'll start with GaoGaiGar's drill knees
What you guys got?
Ideon's Axe Feet.He actually uses them in combat too
I mean plenty of weaponary is fairly uncommon. I will never understand why hardly any melee mechs use spears. You see lances (and even glaives) every now and then but actual spears are really damn rare I feel, even in more fantastical settings.
>>15796826
Gunleon's giant wrench. Also his spanner nunchaku, and his nail guns that fire giant robot sized nails.
Is this an Evangelion reference?
>>15796609
kinda yes.
GaoGaiGar was made to be antithesis to evangelion. (it was also made to sell toys but you probably already know that)

Everything is an Evangelion reference
We've gone plenty of times over why giant robots don't generally make sense. But why not work backwards instead? I've thought up some ideas and I'm wondering if anyone else has done so.
I've posted almost all of these examples before, but here goes...
>Aliens want humans to be their slaves
>Humans tend to get old and die a lot though
>So they turn humans into machines
>Since human minds aren't terribly into controlling simple vehicles like tanks, the machines have to be humanoid
>Since they also want their human slaves to do things on multiple scales, they make size differentiations
>This means some are significantly larger than a human
>It also means some are also significantly smaller, even being the size of Busou Shinki action figures or something
Example two:
>Humans figure out how to turn themselves into machines
>Since translating to something not humanoid sucks, most of these machines are humanoid
>Unfortunately nobody can miniaturize some hardware
>So they just build bigger things around it
>Thus we have giant humanoid robots
Example three:
>People like having robots fight each other, at first it's like sumo robots, then it becomes like Battlebots/Robot Wars, etc.
>Eventually they go off the deep end and start making crazy humanoid robots and such armed with machine guns and missiles
>So why are they giant humanoid robots?
>Because it's badass, of course!
>It's literally stated that they have no hope in real-life combat, but in the arena that doesn't matter
Pic related, the whole thing with Kojima Generators and having instant responses while preventing G-LOC is a good excuse. Still doesn't explain Normals, MTs, and some Arms Forts though, nor does it explain legs other than Bipedals and Reverse-Joints.
>>15796608
>We've gone plenty of times over why giant robots don't generally make sense. But why not work backwards instead?
Because ultimately trying too hard with explanations just tends to pigeonhole settings and limit creative freedom.
Like whatever was the name of that X-punk about us never getting further than primitive rockets when exploring space. That's not sci-fi, that's a depressive horror story.
Anyway, Gundam already covers the basics well enough.
If you make the robot a space battle platform, it suddenly makes more sense than a space fighter or anything of that nature. Of course, space-only.
Fantasy settings are pretty easy as well and there's still a distinctive lack of fantasy robots out there.
>>15796608
they messed up White Glint eyes in the game cg model and this fanart, all the eyes sensors doesn't light up at the same time.
back to you're topic, yep, I with you bro.
How about this:
>aliens invade
>ayys are huge and impervious to conventional weaponry
>melee fighting robots become natural counter
After writing it down it sounds much like Pacific Rim's premise.
Alternatively:
>future
>technology high
>manpower low
>you're gonna need to make each soldier be as efficient as entire tank crew
>robots allow flexibility and ironic simplicity just for that
And finally:
>dogmatic religious reasons
That was a great mecha film. Unexpectedly. A mecha film.
OK? There isnt even a rip is there?
>>15796491
I watched it at the local (UK) cinema. Hooray.
The film came out in March in Japan and this hasn't been scanned yet. For shame.
https://nyaa.si/view/951210Press P to pipopepo pay respects
First for Poppy and Parad aren't dead and whoever thinks that are complete retardd
1.) I really didn't feel her death.
2.) Why the fuck does Kuroto have Proto-MAX. The fucking reset gave Masamune all the proto gasshats that he had before muteki and it's even in his case in the episode after the reset.
Poppy's death would have hit me a lot harder if I didn't know she was going to come back next episode. Everyone transforming into their level 1s was pretty cool. I also liked the Build cameo, Sento seems like he'll be fun.
Is this really as good as everyone says?
No, its for pleb casualfags who refuse to look at good actual gems like trigun or cowboy bebop.
>>15795474
>cowboy bebop
>not death note-tier casual
>>15795471
Depends on, it's not really for everyone. Personally I watched it last year and loved it, mostly for the characters and general vibe of the show, I'm a sucker for space opera's though.
Did they ever explain who originally piloted this monster?
What could possibly have made them want to use it the way they did at the end of the Dark History? What was the pilot thinking?Could anything beat this?
>>15795225
Kinda. The Turn-X's MG manual includes this info (https://pastebin.com/DPLgZy5Z)
> Turn X is a machine that drifted to Earth from outside the solar system for some unknown reason. It's supposedly an MS created by people who left the Earth sphere in search of a new frontier long ago, and is seemingly made to be piloted for the people who were known as newtypes. Thus, it cannot draw on its full power in the current Earth sphere which has no newtypes.
> Regardless, the people of Earth feared its advanced technology, and wary of an invasion from outside the solar system, created the Turn A Gundam and its systems based on the Turn X's technology. In the end there were no invasions, and it instead put an end to the wars on Earth.
> There was once a war between two factions, one that believed that civilization should be reset so that mankind could start anew, and one that wanted to solve all problems with technology, and the Turn A and Turn X, representing the two factions, clashed, and this resulted in the Turn X losing. The X mark on its chest was a result of the damage from this battle, and could not be repaired by any means. In the end civilization was reset, and Turn X and Turn A created mountain cycles at their final destinations.
That's as much as has really ever been said as far as I know, though there's a bit more info on the units themselves scattered around. Tomino's setting notes from a Turn-A book released just after the show has some stuff about how the Moonlight Butterfly is based on the DG cells for instance, but there's nothing more around about the pilots or the people who created the units.
>>15795245
Judau, you tremendous cunt.
>>15795251
Judau isn't involved. When Dianna is expositing the Black History there's a short part where she explains newtypes converted colonies in to hibernation ships and left the Solar System when they realized shit was about to go down and wanted no part in it.
Why does Anno look like he wants to neck himself all the time?
>>15795189
Wouldn't you also want to neck yourself if your most popular works were piles of shit while your actual good stuff gets ignored?
>>15795189
Because he does want to neck himself all the time.

So, I just watched this with a friend and I loved it. Definitely a hidden gem in Toku, I'd recommend watching it. I do have some questions, like
>Who the fuck was that white glowing chick (the one that wasn't Zame)
>No, SERIOUSLY, who the fuck was she
>Literally no one acknowledges her, she never talks, and we're supposed to act like she's important
But other than that it was great, totally worth a watch.

OP here.
That's probably the most /m/etal opening out there, surprised they got Paul Gilbert to do it.

Apparently they got Devin Townsend as well.
