Den-O is easily the most "make shit up as we go along" Rider show. There are shows like Kabuto, Kiva, Decade, Wizard where the story being told is *worse*, but Den-O is the show where the story is least existent. It doesn't really even end so much as it just stops.

So I finally got around to watching Gunbuster after putting it off for so many years. It's a very fun experience that I enjoyed, but why is it regarded so highly? Outside of the Gunbuster itself and being a great spectacle, it's really hokey in a rather laughable way. Drama and characterization is all over the place and it feels like Anno/the staff had either a vision that was too ambitious for such a small run OVA or they had no real vision and kinda were just shooting from the hip. Disjointed is probably the word I would best use to describe Gunbuster.
Tell me /m/ what are your thoughts on Gunbuster and if it deserves its reputation, and what should I expect from Diebuster?

So I decided to rewatch all of Gen-3 of AGE to see where it went wrong, and I gotta say, I feel like the hate is blown way out of proportion. Yes there are some things in it that appear stupid, but not to the point of shitting on the entire series over. For example Kio's attempts at UNDERSTANDING actually feel like they have more effort put into them since he actually tries talking to pilots that aren't nameless grunts. Additionally there's his final talk with Ezelcant in episode 49. He actually breaks through to the guy as he's dying thereby achieving at least SOME level of understanding. Granted he actually says "I'll keep repeating it!" when fighting Girard Spriggan, but it's still more effort than Kira gave. Kira didn't even attempt to talk to anybody and just went straight to disabling them and leaving them to die in the midst of battle. In fact watching episode 43 back to back with some episodes of Victory make me look at Kio as a less skilled Uso more than anything. Flawed and naive, but not being a holier than thou dickhead about wanting peace.
Speaking of Ezelcant, his plan is batshit crazy and self destructive, but that's the whole point. This is a dude who lost his son and a lot of his people to mars rays. So of course he's going to enact a crazy scheme to end all conflict by causing more conflict. Ezelcant kind of reminds me of Zemo from Captain America 3. He doesn't actually give a shit about all the details of his plan. What matters is that he achieves his end goal. This to me makes him out to be a better villain than all the wannabe Hitlers we've had in the past.

Hino said that was the whole point, Kio was naive.
He was the last cool of Asunos, but the kid tried his best to keep his conscience intact. The war wasn't his thing, which is why he had the greatest impact (in games) as a civilian researcher that solved the Mars Rays problem.

Kio was just a kid who wanted everyone to stop killing each other but didn't how to pull it off, the show definitely made it a point that his way was no good. He could keep away with it as far as grunts were concerned but everytime he faced an enemy he couldn't disable to win he resorted to misplaced naive talk which made him rather grating. In the end he finally managed to get it right by convincing his grandfather to let go of his desire for revenge.
Girard Spriggan was awful, period. Yeah she was hot, had a great suit and had a lot of animation budget put into it, yether character still sucked and took everything down with her during her arc.
The only way to make sense of Ezelcant is by pulling the insanity card, and it still doesn't work quite well. It also doesn't explain how the vagan could eat any of his bullshit, especially Zeheart. Oh wait, mind control foreshadowing that was forgotten just after being introduced, dropped plot point due to cancellation?
If you consider that Ezelcant was mad but with powerful brainwashing powers, they could have fixed a lot of AGE problems and just brushed the show as just mech porn with a weak plotline. Everyone sucks MJP for having nothing but "evil aliens attack earth" plot after all.
