So I just finished watching the original Star Wars film and it was okay. The acting was really bad in some parts, and the whole film felt kind of like it was rushing, but overall it was a serviceable movie.
Now I'm guessing that it's popularity was just a product of its time period right? Because even regardless of today's standard, the film is just alright. (to me at least)
So what is it that keeps Star Wars popular? Why the fuck was so Luke so torn up about Ben while it looked like he didn't give a shit about the family that raised him? He just looked down, and then got over it. He didn't even seem angry.

Grief is a path to the Dark Side, so most characters instinctively avoid it. Leia watches her whole planet explode and barely acknowledges it past the initial scene. When she's rescued she's more concerned with comforting Luke because Obi-Wan died.

>Now I'm guessing that it's popularity was just a product of its time period right?
Haven't seen too many movies from the time period, I assume? Movies were pretty slow then and only just starting to turn around and become more exiting. Just like the James Bond franchise nudged movie trends away from super boring kitchen sink movies in the 60's Star Wars one upped it with constant bombastic music and crazy special effects like nothing else.
Basically yes, it was super popular because it did what other movies at the time didn't dare to.

The merchandise, presentation, and special effects at the time.
In regards to Luke's reaction to his foster parents and home getting destroyed, I think he was just at a loss for words and in shock at this sudden upheaval in his otherwise boring and uneventful farmboy life. Just the day before he was going about business as usual on a nowhere moisture farm in the ass crack of the galaxy and now he's flung into a galactic war just because two particular droids showed up at his door stop. When he figured out how the Empire was systematically following the two droids' trail he was pretty frazzled at the realization, enough to ignore Ben's warnings and zoom off to home. By that point I think he already knew what happened to his family even before he saw the disintegrated bodies. The reaction on his face, as I interpret it, was him trying to process the reality of losing just about everything he had so quickly, and the fact that there was no turning back from there on out. Losing Ben later on was just another kick in the teeth as yet another aspect of his old life was taken away, but more than that it was a death that Luke saw in person. With Owen and Berue, Luke only saw the remains of an assault, not the assault itself. I think the distinction of seeing something as it happens and seeing the aftermath of something that has already happened can make a difference in how a character reacts.
What's the strongest rider in your opinion?
To me the strongest is either Gaim or Decade
>I r strongest rider
>inevitable Rider 1 movie appearance in shows him slapping their shit
Rider 1, always
It's whoever the audience cheers for. Like how Double defeated Eternal or whoever won between Showa and Heisei Riders. Which is usually the one whom the movie chooses to focus on like how Base Double beat the crap out of Shadowmoon who was wiping the floor with the asses of all the previous Riders.
>>15436454
to be fair Eternal is a shitty villain with retarded motivations and deserved to get his ass beat for it.
>25% Jap
>25% German
>50% American
>calls herself German
I don't even.
sources: some gay side material that is not mentioned in the show

Isn't she you know FROM GERMANY. My ancestors are French Italian but Ive never stepped out of New England
>>15436315
She grew up and was probably born in Germany so she identifies as such.
People move around the world a lot and stuff, you know? The isolated and stuck in a backwards Christian mid-western town is an American phenomena.
What does /m/ think of escaflowne?
In light of Nobuteru Yuki dying I picked up the show since I haven't seen it before.
I'm on episode 14 atm
Is the movie any good?
Also, favorite track from the OST

I watched this back in the day on fox kids
it was really the series that got me into mecha anime
what an amazing time. the music and story are amazing and something like this WILL NEVER BE MADE AGAIN
it is a gem and I cannot wait to get the hd version coming out thanks to kickstarter
>>15435643
>hd version
really?
Is Tetsuo The Iron Man /m/ ?
>>15435580
Of course. One of the weirdest films I've ever seen. I'd be really curious to know what the story behind its production was. It had sequels too, didn't it?
>>15435580
She looks hot what's her name?
Explain this movie to me plz. Id like to watch it but I don't understand what it's supposed to be
I don't know if it's the case on /m/ but people seem to shit on Stardust Memory and I can't figure out why. The animation is great, the story is about par for the course with Gundam series and the Mobile Suits are all nice. What's the bad part?
I started watching it a couple of days ago after finishing 08th M.S. Team but I can't get into it for some reason.
>>15435246
I see someone didn't actually watch Turn A.

>Kou is the least skilled pilot in the franchise
Considering he goes against veterans, including the Nightmare of Solomon, Kou did pretty well. Gato's GP02 had the advantage in close range but Kou quickly figures out the opening in the left side and managed to close it in a draw.
Robotech makes more sense than Macross.
Rick Hunter has blue eyes, thus a non japanese has blue eyes. Makes a lot of sense.
Hikaru Ichijo has blue eytes... a japanese with blue eyes? Makes no sense!
Macross fans BTFO!
Yeah that's the thing that is unrealistic in the franchise about idols singing giant aliens to death
wtf i hate macross now
>>15434390
Yeah, Robotech makes a lot of sense. An abstract concept like Protoculture becomes some flowers that the Protoculture civilization gardened and then they make out fuel called Protoculture out of it. Bravo, Macek.
>>15434390
You must be really bored.
I'm about to start watching 0079, what am i in for?
>>15433646
The start of Gundam as a franchise. Serious why do people make these threads, watch the show and find out. All you're asking for is potential spoilers.
Amuro
Alot of shit that isn't Canon anymore and clashes horribly with the tone and aesthetic of the rest of UC.
Good job falling for the "don't watch the movies" meme. That's Zeta.
Convince me to watch this.

No. You're (presumably) an adult. Learn to act like one and make your own decisions without having to run it by a Japanese cartoon shitposting message board.

It'd be more accurate if you just put "my favorite mech" in elder god tier and "your favorite mech" in shit tier.

jesus I know she has a thousand bazookas up her hooch but that's a bit extreme no?
also where's megas

I keep forgetting for some reason. As for Jenny Wakeman, see pic related.
I might as well be looking at a picture of shit.

H-h-hey now
High QUALITY pic for a high QUALITY show

I like that coverart. Probably just nostalgia goggles though.
Can someone give me advice on where to start with Ultraman?
Preferably something newer (unless the new ones all suck).
haven't watched much myself but Ultraman Ace looks pretty good, over 40 eps on YouTube

Hello /m/
So, let’s say I’m making an animated short that has to have a synergy between woman and machine. Which one of these two scenarios works better? :
a. cyborg woman that could transform into a fighter aircraft ala Macross
b. huge ArmoredCore-esque mech that got a female AI that thinks she’s a human pilot trapped inside the mech
B. Definitely B.
B sounds quite interesting.
Why not both?
What are some good mecha games?
>>15412527
Western or Eastern release?
>>15412527
Metal Storm
Armored Core series
Assault Suit Valken
Metal Warriors
Front Mission: Gun Hazard
Zone of the Enders 1&2
Gundam Extreme VS (don't know much about this series, but played one on the PS3 and it was pretty good and fun to play with friends)
>>15412542
Doesn't matter, just looking for some fun games with giant robots!
What happened to the big 70s/80s mecha general?
Anyway, talk about what 70s super robot shows you're watching/just finished/are your favorites.
I'm 34 episodes into Mazinger Z, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I really like the characters, the mechanical beasts have been consistently awesome, and there's been some pretty good action. Plus the Scrander just showed up.
>mfw Scrander theme song
Really glad to see someone else joining on on the Toeizinger. It's such a shame so few people have watched it, but seeing more folks joining in is really great. Suffice to say, things might not escalate for now, but you're going to see some fun stuff happen in due time.
Favorite mechanical beast so far?
Me, I've been itching to watch Ideon, but I have the BDs on a separate machine and have to wait a bit to get at them.
Not sure what happened to the old 70s/80s threads. but they were nice.
The best Mazinger episode is the one where Kouji meets that girl with a cross necklace.
>>15395873
I think it died out a year ago due to few getting posted for a long time
However, I would've post about the 80s!Tetsujin BD booklet scans if the 70s/80s general thread wasn't dead
