Is there a single mecha series that basically looks at the "kids piloting robots" trope and says "that's fucking retarded why the fuck are you using child soldiers this is war" and just goes full military like that?
Something that covers the logistics of a 4 story mass shifting air around at hundreds of miles and hour and all the resources it would take and all that shit? Something, I dunno, more /k/ and /sci/.

There's a damn good reason why anywhere in war is a fucking hellhole, its not just the death and destruction, there's also the fact that people tend to ignore the rules and human rights if it meant that they would survive or win.
Simple example, the Law of Armed Conflicts.
If you're following the "rules" you're devoting resources to things that don't help you fight the war. Sure you have the moral high ground, but is it worth the resources spent? There's no right or wrong answer for that, and either choice is understandable.

Actually it was Yasuhiko who proposed the changes. He was the animation director of the series. Okawara talked at length about it in one of the interviews a while back. Neither Yas nor Tomino were very friendly with him back then.
Can't really blame Okawara for that though, he was just following 70s toy design norms. The producers proffered the design on the left and even made a Chogokin of it.

So I just finished all of the original MSG and Zeta, and now I'm about five episodes into ZZ Gundam.
Is it absolutely necessary to watch all of this before CCA? I knew that ZZ was going to be a "Meh" watch, but I didn't think it would be this retarded. I hear it gets better around episode 20-21, but I dunno if I want to slog through that many episodes.
On a slightly unrelated note, should I watch Unicorn immediately after CCA or get through the major OVAs (08th MS Team, 0080, 0083) first?

I'm just a little further down the same path as you in terms of viewing, finished CCA last week. ZZ does get a lot better at the half way point but it is ok to skip some episodes early on if you have to. Once they get to Earth, shit starts to pick up.
As for Unicorn or OVAs next, it's up to you. I'm going through 08th and War In The Pocket before Unicorn. I heard 0083 was exhaustive and boring, so I'm going to skip that for now.

As far as films went, it was a total shitshow.
As far as mech action went, there was fuck all.
In fact in the end battle mostly you just see humans shooting offscreen. Megatron and Optimus fight for literally 9 seconds, and all Optimus does is kick him through a wall after cutting his arm off.
It's fucking terrible mate.
