Before mobile suits were made I think the idea was for it to be a tank with arms, uniquely designed to be used within a space colony. if the artificial gravity fails type-61s cant operate properly but guntanks can. It is also possible that guntanks would make less of a collateral mess inside of a colony than mobile suits do because they don't fly around and fall over things.

I guess the beams were made to kill humans first and MS were developed to resist beams, so it kinda makes sense that beams don't instantly slay MS.
But still, you'd think that they could have at least fucked up Ride's mech some more since he took a direct, sustained blast head-on for nearly 30 seconds. I don't care how strong nanolaminate is, that shit should not be able to simply get back up and start punching and kicking after that.
On one hand, SEED has a lot of yaoi fans who want to see him and Athrun do dirty, dirty things to each other.
On the other, he's a power fantasy. Someone otaku can imagine themselves as. He has hidden abilities that appeal to chuunibiyou, and uses his immense power to make things go his way. He's never treated as wrong or misguided, in fact people are misguided if they don't agree with him or his girlfriend.

Even though some characters were unlikable or naive, at least they acted according to their own logic and personal reasoning.
They felt like actual human beings but also flawed, as opposed to the unpalatable autists we got in Zeta. The romance was light and not forced down our throat like in Zeta. (Kamille and Four's contrived autistic newtype bullshit).
Zeta had a few good ideas, but the execution was amateurish and childish. The way Tomino approached this work was like that of a manchild.
All of this shitty direction could have been avoided if Takahashi was in charge instead.
How does Votoms work? I know there's the original series, but as far as I'm aware there are a lot of OVAs and movies that have been released over the years as well.
Do they all take place in the same timeline and are considered canon, or are there some that fall outside of the original's chronology? Obviously they should be watched in production order, but are they also chronological?
Just watch the show first. After that, watch the OVAs and movies in production order. I think after the show it's Big Battle --> Roots of Ambition --> The Last Red Shoulder. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Mellowlink is the only thing that really steps out of the main storyline, I think.
I mean I was gonna watch in production order anyway, but it's nice to know the actual chronology. It seems like a lot, but a lot of those are one shots or really short OVAs you can knock out in a day or so.
