Haven't actually read it.

But being a film student I have hear about it plenty, and now I see the hero's journey in pretty much every story I see/read.

I guess I should probably get around to reading it.

I too would like to know

OP here, I'm about halfway through it. I think that while it has its uses in deconstructing common movie plots etc, it's purpose was never to provide 'one size fits all' formula that all fiction follows. I think Campbell's intent was to create something through which myths that have been written off by the modern world could be re-analysed and made relevant again. In my opinion, he's done a pretty good job so far.

That being said, it's probably good to be aware of the stages of the monomyth if you're in film school, and at least one way of interpreting their psychological significance.

It's good. Easy to read and filled with interesting bits of mythology.

Campbell was still grounded when he wrote it, not all new-agey and pop-psychology. He has some scholarly stuff, and some myth-as-self-help stuff; the former is always better.

i liked it. it demonstrates that spiritual progression has been described/discussed/investigated via stories for millennia. also, the ending is a kicker.

you might like to try "man and his symbols" by jung after, it covers similar ground.

Thanks senpai, Might check the Jung book out. I'm pretty hyped for the ending, the one other person I know who's read this told me it's mind-blowing.
