I think that while it has its uses in deconstructing common movie plots etc, it's purpose was never to provide 'one size fits all' formula that all fiction follows. I think Campbell's intent was to create something through which myths that have been written off by the modern world could be re-analysed and made relevant again. In my opinion, he's done a pretty good job so far.
That being said, it's probably good to be aware of the stages of the monomyth if you're in film school, and at least one way of interpreting their psychological significance.
