All of the above are generally considered good/~literary~, but Sinkiewicz is old romantic nationalism so YMMV, le Guin is a bit more obscure than the rest

Are these any good? Goodreads doesn't seem to like them.

I'm a big fan of Dorothy Dunnett. She wrote a standalone (11th century) and two series of 6 and 8 eight books, set in the 16th and 15th centuries, respectively. Great books.

There's also Mika Waltari (only read the Egyptian, but it was very good), Mary Renault (ancient Greek stuff), Colleen McCullough (ancient Rome stuff), Flashman, Aubrey & Maturin, Hornblower...
